Town by town

How arranging care differs across Bergen County towns

Bergen County has nearly a million residents in 70 municipalities, which is why senior transportation and programs differ from one town to the next. A ride that is easy to book in one borough may not exist in the next, and the senior center your mother would enjoy may be in a town she doesn't live in.

We arrange care for every town in the county from our Short Hills office, and the care itself is the same everywhere. What changes is the help around it: the bus, the meal program, the club, the hospital a discharge comes back through. Here is what we found for the towns with their own pages.

  • Ridgewood (ZIP 07450)

    The village runs a senior bus on set days, reserved by phone: Tuesdays within the village, Thursdays to neighboring towns, and Wednesday trips that include the Wyckoff ShopRite. Residents 65 and older can get discounted taxi coupons. The Patrick A. Mancuso Senior Center in the Community Center is under renovation, and fall classes moved to other rooms in Village Hall and to the Stable, so confirm where a class meets before a parent heads over. A caregiver can go along on the bus or to the class.

  • Saddle River (ZIP 07458)

    The borough's community page points residents to county Meals on Wheels, Meals on Wheels North Jersey and county Senior Services, and notes that each provider sets its own coverage, so confirm service for your address. We did not find a borough senior bus or club, so county Community Transportation is the place to start for a ride. Brighton Gardens of Saddle River is on Boroline Road.

  • Alpine (ZIP 07620)

    We did not find a borough senior program page, but the borough does have a Resident Special Needs Registry, a form filed with the Alpine Police Department that notes needs such as oxygen, a wheelchair, power for medical equipment, an emergency contact and whether anyone has a key. Worth filling out for a parent who lives alone. Meals on Wheels North Jersey lists Alpine in its service area.

  • Tenafly (ZIP 07670)

    The Tenafly Senior Center on South Summit Street is open Monday to Friday and serves members from across Bergen County. The Kaplen JCC runs caregiver support groups and a memory cafe, and the Korean Community Center has a social adult day program. Brightview Tenafly offers assisted living, and Family of Caring Healthcare at Tenafly is a skilled nursing facility.

  • Franklin Lakes (ZIP 07417)

    Franklin Lakes Seniors, Inc. meets the first and third Wednesday of each month for residents 55 and older. Borough pages send older residents to county services and a transportation guide that lists Community Transportation and Access Link. Sunrise of Franklin Lakes offers assisted living and memory care, and Meals on Wheels North Jersey delivers here.

  • Upper Saddle River (ZIP 07458)

    We did not find a borough senior page, so the county network is the starting point: the Senior HelpLine, Community Transportation and, for home-delivered meals, Meals on Wheels North Jersey, which lists Upper Saddle River. Millennium Memory Care at Upper Saddle River is on the county's list of residential dementia care homes.

  • Ho-Ho-Kus

    We could not confirm a borough senior program here, so start with the county: the Senior HelpLine, Ride Connect for residents 60 and older and the county senior activity centers. Ask the borough office whether it runs anything local, and check Meals on Wheels coverage for your address.

  • Wyckoff (ZIP 07481)

    The township runs a Senior Busing Program with Christian Health Care Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with pick-up at home for residents over 55 and disabled individuals. Requests for Tuesday are due by 6:00 p.m. the Thursday before, and for Thursday by 6:00 p.m. Monday. Christian Health's Wyckoff campus offers rehab, assisted living, memory care and adult day care in one place. Confirm Meals on Wheels North Jersey coverage for your address.

  • Englewood Cliffs (ZIP 07632)

    The Seniors of Englewood Cliffs meet the second Monday of each month, and a HARP nurse is on hand before the meeting for blood pressure and health questions. County Meals on Wheels serves Englewood Cliffs.

  • Glen Rock

    The borough runs a free Senior Shuttle on a set weekly schedule to grocery stores and shopping centers, and it can take residents to doctors' appointments. Discounted taxi coupons and the Glen Courts senior housing are listed on the borough's senior page, and the senior center posts a monthly events calendar.

  • Woodcliff Lake

    The senior association's van runs Tuesday to Thursday with reservations 24 to 48 hours ahead: food shopping Tuesday, doctor and pharmacy trips Wednesday, local errands Thursday. Sunrise, The Bristal and Fox Trail memory care are all here, as is Woodcliff Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center. Meals on Wheels North Jersey delivers.

  • Leonia

    County Meals on Wheels serves Leonia, and the Leonia entrance to Overpeck County Park is on Fort Lee Road. We could not confirm borough senior programs, so ask the borough directly and use county Community Transportation for rides.

  • Allendale

    Allendale Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center on Harreton Road is the town's licensed skilled nursing and rehab facility. For rides, meals and activities, the county network applies.

Hospital to home

Coming home from a Bergen County hospital

The Valley Hospital moved from Ridgewood to 4 Valley Health Plaza in Paramus on April 14, 2024. The Ridgewood site on North Van Dien Avenue is now a Valley outpatient campus for imaging, lab and endoscopy, so a hospital stay that used to mean Ridgewood now means Paramus. Some local resource sites still list the old address, so check the address on a discharge paper or appointment letter before anyone drives.

Before the discharge date, ask the hospital's case manager what the doctor expects the first week to look like: equipment, medicines, follow-up visits, and whether your parent will need hands-on help getting in and out of bed or the shower. Ask for the date and rough time of discharge, and who will drive. If you'd like a caregiver at the house when your parent arrives, tell us the date and we'll explain the next steps.

The first night is often the hardest, because the medicine list is new and the house hasn't changed to match. Many families arrange someone to be there overnight. Over the first week, a caregiver can cover meals, reminders, getting around the house and the first follow-up appointment while the family sorts out what comes next. A registered nurse visits at home first and writes the care plan with you.

  • The Valley Hospital, Paramus

    Valley's Care Coordination team plans for care after discharge. Every admitted patient has a case manager who is a registered nurse, and case managers can help set up home care services. Valley's discharge planning page explains how it works.

  • Hackensack University Medical Center

    An 803-bed teaching hospital and Level I Adult Trauma Center in Hackensack. Hackensack Meridian Health's patient page explains that physicians, nurses, the Case Management team and the discharge team review written discharge instructions before a patient leaves.

  • Englewood Hospital

    Englewood Health's page describes a case coordinator, a registered nurse, who helps arrange visiting nurse services at home, inpatient rehabilitation or medical equipment. Medicare inpatients receive information about their discharge rights.

  • Holy Name Medical Center, Teaneck

    Holy Name Medical Center is in Teaneck. As at any hospital, ask the discharge planner early what has been ordered for after the stay and what the family needs to arrange separately, such as help at home in the first days.

  • Pascack Valley Medical Center, Westwood

    A Hackensack Meridian Health hospital serving the Pascack Valley area. The system's patient page on going home covers it, and the campus has handicap parking and valet service.

Senior living

Assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and adult day in Bergen County

Assisted living gives a parent an apartment with meals and help with daily tasks. Memory care communities are built around dementia, with secured areas and staff trained for it. Skilled nursing and rehab is for people who need nursing around the clock or are recovering after a hospital stay. Adult day programs let a parent spend the day with other people and go home at night, which gives a family caregiver hours back.

Bergen County has plenty of each. The county's 2026 Key Services Guide lists licensed assisted living residences from Saddle River and Tenafly to Paramus, Englewood and Waldwick, residential dementia care homes in Woodcliff Lake, Paramus, Cresskill and Upper Saddle River, and more than a dozen skilled nursing facilities. Christian Health's Wyckoff campus puts rehab, assisted living, memory care and adult day on one site. The county notes that a listing is not an endorsement, so tour, ask questions and check the license with the New Jersey Department of Health.

Home care works alongside a move as well as instead of one. A caregiver can help a parent settle into a new community, add company and personal care on top of what the staff provide, or keep the routine going at home so a family has time to choose. For adult day, a caregiver can handle the morning routine and the ride.

County services

Bergen County senior services, and who to call first

One call reaches the county aging network: the Senior HelpLine at the Division of Senior Services, open to adults 60 and older, adults 18 and older with a disability, and family caregivers. The division is the county's Area Agency on Aging and lead agency for the Aging and Disability Resource Connection, so it can point you to rides, meals, benefits and caregiver help in one conversation. The number is on the county's page.

From the same office you can reach free Medicare counseling through SHIP, a daily Wellness Check phone call that alerts a relative if your parent doesn't answer, and ten county-run senior activity centers open Monday to Friday. For dementia, the county runs the Dementia Friendly Initiative and a Caregiver Coalition, and estimates that more than 20,000 Bergen County seniors have some form of dementia.

These programs fill a lot of a week but not all of it. A caregiver can cover the hours in between, take a parent to the senior center or the lunch program, and keep an eye on how the day went so you can tell the county what you've seen.

  • Aging and Disability Resource Connection

    The central source of information for older adults, caregivers and adults with a disability. Helps with financial assistance, aging in place, home modifications, transportation, caregiver support, nutrition, tax relief, benefits counseling, forms and a path to publicly funded long-term care programs.

  • Caregiver programs

    The In-Home Caregiver Education and Support Program gives unpaid caregivers an RN-developed teaching plan at no cost. The New Jersey Statewide Respite Care Program, through the Division of Disability Services, covers relief services such as home health aides, adult day care, short-term inpatient care, assisted living and skilled nursing. Call to ask about eligibility.

  • SHIP Medicare counseling

    Free, confidential and by appointment. Counselors are trained volunteers and do not sell or recommend insurance products.

  • Senior activity centers

    Ten county-run centers in Bergenfield, Palisades Park, Elmwood Park, Ridgefield Park, Garfield, East Rutherford, Midland Park, Hackensack, North Arlington and Wallington, with a nutrition component and county transportation to and from each.

Rides and meals

Rides to appointments and meals at home in Bergen County

Bergen County Community Transportation is door-to-door, wheelchair accessible and free to eligible residents, with a suggested donation. The rule that matters: book at least 3 business days ahead, and schedule between 10am and 2pm. Rides are first come, first served. Weekly trips such as dialysis or physical therapy are requested by the facility by fax or email. Ride Connect is the county's one-stop way for residents 60 and older to schedule a ride, and a Mobility Manager works with the dispatchers on accessible options.

EZ Ride uses Uber and Lyft for eligible seniors 60 and older and adults with disabilities 18 and older. It isn't door-to-door and isn't wheelchair accessible, so it fits a parent who can get to the curb and into a car. NJ Transit's Access Link serves disabled riders who live within three quarters of a mile of a bus route but cannot use public transportation, and seniors can ride most NJ Transit buses at a reduced fare.

Two different Meals on Wheels programs deliver depending on the town. County Meals on Wheels serves towns including Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Leonia, Teaneck, Hackensack and Fort Lee. Meals on Wheels North Jersey, a non-profit, serves 32 northern towns including Alpine, Franklin Lakes, Saddle River, Tenafly, Upper Saddle River, Woodcliff Lake and Wyckoff. Both deliver a weekday meal to homebound seniors, so ask the one that serves your address. A caregiver can ride along to an appointment and be there when the meal arrives.

Choosing an agency

How to choose a home care agency in Bergen County

In New Jersey, a firm that is not a Department of Health-licensed home health agency or hospice but employs, places or refers anyone to give companion, health care or personal care in the home of a person with a disability or age 60 or older must register as a Health Care Service Firm with the Division of Consumer Affairs. Endurance Home Care is a registered New Jersey Health Care Service Firm, registration HP0435100.

The law also separates two kinds of help. Companion services are basic supervision and socialization without help with daily activities. Personal care, meaning bathing, toileting, transferring, dressing, grooming and walking, is done by licensed or certified personnel. The state's certified homemaker-home health aide, or CHHA, completes a course approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing with a training program of at least 76 hours, is employed by a home care services agency and works under a registered nurse's supervision. Certification renews every two years.

The state's consumer guide also notes that a family who hires someone privately is responsible for withholding taxes, Social Security and disability payments, and that the person will not have had a criminal history background check through an agency.

A few questions are worth asking any agency. Is the firm registered with the Division of Consumer Affairs, and what is the number? Who visits first, and who writes the care plan? Who do I call, and who tells me when a caregiver can't come? How are caregivers screened and trained? What happens if the match isn't right? With us, a registered nurse visits at home and writes the care plan with you, a Care Manager looks after the plan and keeps your family posted, and a Care Coordinator looks after the schedule and the caregiver match. We check backgrounds and references, verify qualifications, orient caregivers before their first shift and train them monthly. The office is at 788 Morris Turnpike, Suite 201, Short Hills.

Cost

What home care costs in Bergen County and how families pay

The cost depends on how many hours you need, the schedule (hourly, overnight, live-in or around the clock), the kind of help (companion or personal care) and the market. Endurance publishes no prices, and we'll go through the numbers with you after we've heard what a typical day and night look like.

For a market reference, the CareScout Cost of Care Survey (fielded July to November 2025, released March 2026) puts the New Jersey median for an in-home caregiver at $38 an hour, or $86,944 a year at 44 hours a week. That is a state median from a national survey, not an Endurance price, and CareScout notes that a provider's price may differ from the median.

Endurance is private pay and does not accept insurance directly. Families with a long-term care insurance policy can use it, and we help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. It covers home health only when a person needs skilled care and is homebound, and it doesn't cover 24-hour care or personal care when that is the only care needed. Other sources can lighten the load: respite through the New Jersey Statewide Respite Care Program, care management help with benefit applications from Bergen Family Center, free Medicare counseling through SHIP, and, for veterans and widows, the county Division of Veterans Services.

Outings

Parks, the zoo and historic sites to visit with a parent

Bergen County's parks are some of the easiest outings to plan. Van Saun County Park in Paramus has more than 3 miles of paths, picnic pavilions and the Bergen County Zoo, which is open seven days a week, weather permitting, with last entry at 4:00pm. The county page lists reduced admission categories for seniors and people with disabilities. Saddle River County Park has a roughly 6-mile path from Ridgewood to Rochelle Park that passes the Dunkerhook waterfall and the 1899 Easton Tower. Overpeck County Park has 5 miles of trails, an observation deck and a canoe and kayak launch.

Pick the shortest version of an outing. Choose one stretch of path, go midday, and plan the way back before you leave. Hot days need a plan, and the county parks department points residents to its official pages for cooling-center information. Music at the Wortendyke Barn in Park Ridge is a free concert series, four concerts from July through October.

A companion caregiver can make an outing work: get you there and back, walk at your parent's pace, carry the water and the folding chair, and stay alongside. For anyone who wants to go on their own terms and is fine with company, that is often enough.

Do you provide home care in Bergen County?

In New Jersey, a firm that places caregivers in the home of someone 60 or older must be registered as a Health Care Service Firm with the Division of Consumer Affairs, so ask for the registration number. Ask who visits first, how caregivers are screened and who you call. Endurance is registered (HP0435100) and offers companion and personal care on every schedule.

Where is The Valley Hospital now?

The Valley Hospital moved from Ridgewood to 4 Valley Health Plaza in Paramus on April 14, 2024. The Ridgewood site on North Van Dien Avenue is now a Valley outpatient campus with imaging, lab and endoscopy services. Some local resource sites still show the old address, so check the address on any discharge paper or appointment letter before you drive.

Is there adult day care in Bergen County?

Yes. Bergen Family Center in Englewood runs a social adult day program for county residents 60 and older, and the county lists licensed adult day health care programs in Dumont, Paramus, Englewood, Bergenfield, Rockleigh and Wyckoff, plus a social program in Tenafly. Ask each program what kind it is, who is on staff and whether it offers transportation.

How do seniors in Bergen County get rides to appointments?

County Community Transportation is door-to-door, wheelchair accessible and free to eligible residents with a suggested donation. Book at least 3 business days ahead, between 10am and 2pm. EZ Ride uses Uber and Lyft but isn't door-to-door. Some towns also run their own senior bus or shuttle. A caregiver can go along to the appointment.

Do you provide home health aides in Bergen County?

In New Jersey, hands-on personal care is done by licensed or certified personnel, and the state's certified home health aide is certified by the Board of Nursing and works under a registered nurse. Endurance Home Care provides personal care and companion care in Bergen County. Ask us which certification applies to your parent's needs. Skilled nursing and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company working in Connecticut.

How much does home care cost in Bergen County?

Endurance publishes no prices. The cost depends on the hours, the schedule, the kind of help and the market. As a reference, the CareScout Cost of Care Survey for 2025 gives a New Jersey median of $38 an hour for an in-home caregiver. That is a state median, not an Endurance price. Are there caregiver support groups in Bergen County?

Yes. The Kaplen JCC in Tenafly runs Alzheimer's Association caregiver groups and a memory cafe. Bergen Family Center holds monthly meetings in person and online, and Jewish Family and Children's Services has a caregiver support group in Teaneck. The county also offers free in-home caregiver education with a nurse-developed teaching plan.

The county runs ten senior activity centers open Monday to Friday with a lunch program, and many towns have their own: Tenafly's senior center offers more than 18 exercise classes and 5 art classes a week, Ridgewood has a senior club and Franklin Lakes has a seniors club. Two programs deliver, depending on your town. County Meals on Wheels serves towns including Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Leonia and Teaneck. Meals on Wheels North Jersey serves 32 northern towns including Alpine, Franklin Lakes, Saddle River, Tenafly and Woodcliff Lake. Both deliver weekday meals to homebound seniors, so confirm the one that serves your address.

Can you help after a hospital stay in Bergen County?

Yes. Tell us the discharge date and we'll explain the next steps. A registered nurse visits at home and writes the care plan, and a caregiver can cover meals, reminders and getting around the house. The hospital's case manager can tell you what the doctor expects the first week to look like.
