Which Rye

The City of Rye, the Town of Rye and Rye Brook: what belongs where

The City of Rye (ZIP 10580) is its own city and has been independent of the Town of Rye since 1942. The Town of Rye today is Port Chester, Rye Brook and the Rye Neck section of Mamaroneck, and it does not include the City. Rye Brook became a village on July 7, 1982 and is not part of the City of Rye. Each government runs its own programs for older residents, so the program a parent can join follows the address.

Some things are shared. One 911 ambulance service, Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook EMS, answers in the City of Rye, Rye Brook and Port Chester. Rye Town Park and Oakland Beach sell their own season permits, and Crawford Park in Rye Brook is a Town of Rye park, so check each one's rules. The City's own senior program is for City of Rye residents 60 and over, and a Rye Brook resident 55 and over uses the Rye Brook Senior Center instead.

Endurance serves the City of Rye from our Stamford, Connecticut office, and companion care works the same whichever side of these lines a home sits on. What changes is the list of programs we plan around.

City of Rye (ZIP 10580)
City Hall is at 1051 Boston Post Road. Rye Seniors, the Rye Free Reading Room, the YMCA, the Nature Center and The Osborn are all within about 4 minutes by car of City Hall.
Village of Rye Brook (ZIP 10573)
A separate village with its own senior center and Dial-A-Ride. It has a page of its own, with the Posillipo Community Center, the village rides and the King Street facilities.
Village of Port Chester (ZIP 10573)
Shares the 10573 ZIP with Rye Brook and holds the Town of Rye office. The county's nearest meals site for Rye is the Port Chester Senior & Community Center.
Rye Neck
Part of the Town of Rye, and not the City. The Town's own page describes it two ways, as the Rye Neck portion of the Village of Mamaroneck and as the unincorporated section of the Town of Mamaroneck, so ask the Town if your parent's address is there.
Purchase (ZIP 10577)
A postal community north of Rye Brook with its own ZIP. We have not confirmed which municipal senior programs apply there, so ask the program before you plan around it. The Alzheimer's Association caregiver center is on Westchester Avenue.

Coming home from the hospital

Hospitals families from Rye use, and a plan for the day you come home

By routing estimate, Greenwich Hospital is about 10 minutes from City Hall, just over the Connecticut line, and it lists Westchester County in its service area. White Plains Hospital is about 12 minutes away. Montefiore New Rochelle is about 14 minutes, Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla about 19, and NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester in Bronxville is the other hospital families mention. United Hospital in Port Chester no longer appears on the state's hospital list, so do not plan around it. In an emergency call 911.

Both main hospitals publish their going-home steps. Greenwich Hospital's page says planning for a safe discharge begins the day you are admitted and names "homemaker/companion services" among the needs its team assesses, with discharge after breakfast. White Plains Hospital asks families to arrange transportation home "no later than 11 a.m." and to meet its Care Management team early in the stay, and it says "insurance does not cover taxi or ambulette service fees". Plan the ride home yourself.

Before the date: ask the case manager what your parent can do alone and what needs a person, line up food that is easy to prepare, and write down the follow-up appointments with who is driving. The first night is mostly about someone being in the house. The first week is about meals, errands and getting to the first visit. Our planner walks through it.

Senior living and care options

Assisted living, memory care, nursing and adult day in and around Rye

Care at home brings help to your parent's own rooms. Assisted living is an apartment in a community with staff nearby for daily help. A memory care community is a staffed neighborhood for people living with memory loss. Skilled nursing and rehabilitation is a medical setting for a short or long stay. Independent living is a home in a community with meals and amenities. An adult day program is a day away from home with home still the base. Endurance's own offer in New York is companion care, and we do not provide the care that assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing provides.

The Osborn, at 101 Theall Road, is the one campus in Rye with independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehabilitation together. It also lists short stays so a family caregiver can take a break. Its Pasciuti Pavilion offers short-term and outpatient rehabilitation and long-term care, and its Grandview residences list three assisted living licence types. In Port Chester, The Enclave at Rye Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and King Street Home Inc (listed as King Street Rehab) are state-licensed skilled nursing facilities.

We found no adult day program in Rye, Rye Brook or Port Chester. The nearest are River House in Cos Cob, Connecticut, a medical model program with a nurse on site, and Club Wartburg in Mount Vernon. A day program works well with the other days covered, and a companion can handle the rides, the evenings and the weekends.

If your parent moves to a community, a companion can visit for company, outings, errands and rides, by the hour. We do not partner with any community, and each one sets its own rules for outside visitors, so ask before you book. The longer guide compares the settings and lists questions for a tour.

Programs in town

Rye Seniors, SPRYE, the rides and the library, and how a companion fills the hours between

The City's senior program, Rye Seniors, meets at the Damiano Recreation Center, 281 Midland Avenue, for City of Rye residents 60 and over. The monthly calendar has exercise, painting, games, lunches, speakers and trips, and advance registration is required. The October 2026 list includes Movies and Munchies, a lunch, a ladies tea, a shopping trip and a Halloween party. The Rye Free Reading Room at 1061 Boston Post Road keeps large print books and a low vision enlarger, and in the summer the Rye Seniors meet there for exercise and drop-in games.

SPRYE (Staying Put in Rye and Environs) serves adults 55 and older in Harrison, Port Chester, Rye and Rye Brook. Its office is now at 55 S. Main St. in Port Chester. Members get free home safety evaluations, and +PLUS members can book rides to appointments, errands, groceries and the hairdresser, Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. SPRYE also runs Gentle Chair Yoga on Wednesdays at the Crawford Park Mansion in Rye Brook.

We did not find a ride service run by the City of Rye itself; the City's senior program does include offsite shopping, theater and lunch trips. Beyond SPRYE, Bee-Line ParaTransit is a shared county ride for people who functionally cannot use the regular bus, with reservations one to seven days ahead, and the Bee-Line offers reduced fares to riders 65 and over. For meals, the county lists the Port Chester Senior & Community Center as the nearest site. For help finding services, the Westchester Livable Communities site for Rye is at Westchester Jewish Community Services, and NY Connects is the county's free information line.

SPRYE rides run weekdays, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., for +PLUS members, and Rye Seniors programs need advance registration. That is where scheduled companion hours fit: the ride home after the program, lunch the other days, the Saturday with nothing planned, and the night hours. A companion works alongside Rye Seniors and SPRYE and does not replace them.

Outings

Places to go together: the Sound, the nature center, the Jay Estate and the library

Rye Town Park and Oakland Beach sit on Long Island Sound about 5 minutes from City Hall. The beach is closed for the 2026 season and reopens in 2027, and the beach gates are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the off-season for a walk. The senior permit age is 65 and over. The park has two beach wheelchairs, and the caregiver who assists gets in free. Playland is closed for the season; the 2026 season closed September 13 and 2027 dates are not yet published.

The Rye Nature Center on Boston Post Road has trails open daily from sunrise to sunset. The Jay Estate grounds are open dawn to dusk year round, though the mansion opens only for special programs, the Wachenheim Center is closed for rehabilitation, and the gardens close after November 1. The Square House Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday with free admission, and the Rye Arts Center runs art, music and writing classes for adults.

Choosing an agency

How to choose a home care agency in Rye

Start with what kind of help your parent needs. In New York, an agency that provides nursing or aide services needs a license from the state Department of Health. The state's Business Express portal says an agency that provides solely companionship with light housekeeping does not need that license. So the first question to any agency is which of those it offers, and the Department of Health's Health Profiles site lets you search licensed home care services agencies.

Then ask how the agency works: who visits first and who writes the plan, how the caregiver is chosen and whether you meet them before the first visit, who you call when something changes, how caregivers are screened, what happens if a caregiver cannot come, and how families are billed. Ask for the schedule and the rate in writing. Private agencies like ours are paid by families directly, which is a good question to ask of anyone you call.

Cost and paying

What sets the cost of companion care in Rye, and how families pay

The cost depends on the schedule (a few hours a week, overnight, live-in or around the clock), how many days, and the kind of help. Endurance publishes no prices; we explain the cost in the first conversation, once we know what your family needs.

For a reference point only, the CareScout 2025 Cost of Care Survey puts the New York state median for an in-home caregiver at $35 an hour. CareScout notes that any one provider's price can differ from the median, so it tells you roughly where the market is and nothing about any agency's rate.

Endurance is private pay, so families pay from savings, income or other resources. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork, and the insurer decides what it reimburses. Medicare does not pay for most long-term custodial care. Westchester County's EISEP arranges in-home help for adults 60 and older on a sliding fee based on income, and a case manager visits first, so it is worth asking about. Veterans may ask about VA benefits.

Arranging companion care in Rye when you live somewhere else

Many families arranging care in Rye live in another city or abroad. You can start by phone: tell us about the days, the house and the people your parent sees. A registered nurse then visits your parent at home to plan the care, and you meet the companion before the first visit.

A park and beach on 28.1 acres along Long Island Sound, about 5 minutes from Rye City Hall. The senior permit age is 65 and over, and lifetime senior permit renewals are done in person. A season permit does not come with a reserved space, so ask about parking before you drive over.

The beach is closed for the 2026 season and reopens in 2027. Off-season, the beach gates are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for a walk, and dogs are not allowed on the sand. The park has introduced two beach wheelchairs; bring a caregiver who can transfer and push, and the caregiver's admission fee is waived.

Do you provide home care in Rye?

Yes. In the City of Rye we provide companion care: company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides and company at appointments, by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. A registered nurse visits first to plan the care with your family, and your Care Manager keeps you posted.

Is the City of Rye the same as the Town of Rye?

No. The City of Rye is a separate municipality. The Town of Rye takes in Port Chester, Rye Brook and Rye Neck, so the local programs that apply depend on the address. The City has been independent of the Town since 1942.

Is Rye Brook part of the City of Rye?

No. Rye Brook became a village on July 7, 1982 and sits in the Town of Rye. It has its own senior center and its own Dial-A-Ride. One ambulance service, Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook EMS, answers 911 calls in the City, the village and Port Chester.

Can someone stay overnight or live in?

Yes. A companion can stay awake through the night hours, live in, or work shifts around the clock. We'll talk through which schedule fits the nights you're thinking about. A live-in companion has agreed working time and a night's rest, which is different from an awake overnight shift.

Which office serves the City of Rye?

Rye is served from our office at 60 Long Ridge Road in Stamford, Connecticut. A registered nurse visits your parent at home to plan the care, and you meet your companion before the first visit. Call the Connecticut Client Support Line and we'll talk through what your family needs.

What is the closest hospital to Rye?

Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut is about 10 minutes by car from Rye City Hall and White Plains Hospital is about 12. Montefiore New Rochelle is about 14 and Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla about 19. In an emergency call 911; Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook EMS answers in Rye.

What help can my parent get coming home from Greenwich Hospital or White Plains Hospital?

The hospital's case management team plans the medical side. Greenwich discharges after breakfast and White Plains asks for the ride home by 11 a.m. We help with company on the ride, someone in the house, meals, errands and rides to follow-up visits. Our planner covers the first 72 hours.

What is the Rye senior program, and who can join?

Rye Seniors is the City's program at the Damiano Recreation Center, 281 Midland Avenue, for City of Rye residents age 60 and over. It runs exercise, games, lunches, speakers and trips, and advance registration is required. A Rye Brook resident uses the Rye Brook Senior Center instead.

Is there a ride service in Rye for older residents?

We did not find one run by the City. SPRYE offers weekday rides, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to its +PLUS members, and Bee-Line ParaTransit serves people who cannot use the regular bus, with reservations one to seven days ahead. A companion can cover evenings, weekends and errands.

Can a companion help my mother keep up her usual outings?

Yes. A companion can drive her to the senior program, appointments, the shops or a visit with friends, and keep her company along the way. Tell us what her week looks like and we'll plan around it.

Is assisted living or care at home the right choice?

It depends on the person. Assisted living is an apartment in a community with staff nearby, while care at home keeps your parent in familiar rooms with help arranged around the day. If the need is company, meals and rides, companion care at home may be enough. If it is more, ask the doctor.

How do I choose a home care agency in Rye?

First find out whether the agency offers companionship only. If an agency also sends aides for hands-on help, that requires a New York license, so check the state's list. Then ask who visits first, how the caregiver is chosen, who you call, and what happens if a caregiver cannot come. Ask for the rate in writing.

Are you a private home care agency?

Yes. Care with Endurance is private pay, so families pay from their own resources, and we do not bill insurance directly. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare doesn't pay for ongoing daily help at home.

How much does companion care cost?

It depends on the schedule, the number of days and the kind of help, and Endurance publishes no prices. For a market reference, the CareScout 2025 survey puts the New York state median for an in-home caregiver at $35 an hour. Any one provider's price can differ.

I live out of town. How can I arrange care for a parent in Rye?
