What are good things to do in Rye with an older parent?

Rye Town Park and its walking paths, the Rye Nature Center trails, the Jay Estate grounds, the Square House Museum, the library and the Rye Seniors calendar all work. The beach is closed until 2027, Playland is closed for the season, and the Jay gardens close after November 1. A companion can drive and stay alongside.

Easy outings close to home

The Rye Free Reading Room at 1061 Boston Post Road is open Monday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday until 5:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.; the library posts its 2026 closings. It has large print books and a low vision enlarger. The Square House Museum, 1 Purchase Street, is open Tuesday to Saturday with free admission and a suggested donation.

The Rye Arts Center at 51 Milton Road runs art, music and writing classes for adults and lists a senior membership with a class discount, so confirm current terms. The Rye YMCA at 21 Locust Avenue has an Active Older Adults program with classes and Day Tripper Adventures trips, and EnhanceFitness for older adults of all fitness levels.

The water and the parks

Rye Town Park and Oakland Beach sit on Long Island Sound at 95 Dearborn Avenue, on 28.1 acres of rolling terrain designed in 1909. The beach is closed for the 2026 season and reopens in 2027; off-season the beach gates are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and dogs are not allowed on the sand. The senior permit age is 65 and over, lifetime renewals are in person, and a season permit does not come with a reserved space.

The park has introduced two beach wheelchairs. Bring a caregiver who can transfer and push, and the caregiver's admission fee is waived. The wheelchairs stay on the sand and are not for the water.

Playland, the county amusement park and beach at 1 Playland Parkway, is closed for the season. The 2026 season closed September 13, and 2027 dates are not yet published. Its site lists an ADA Access Pass page with boarding instructions for each ride. County park passes are not honored there. A leashed dog beach is open October 5 to April 18.

The Rye Nature Center at 873 Boston Post Road has trails open daily from sunrise to sunset. The Jay Estate at 210 Boston Post Road is a 23-acre park and historic site: the grounds are open dawn to dusk all year, the mansion is open only for special programs and exhibits, the Wachenheim Center is closed for rehabilitation, and the gardens are open on select days through November 1, 2026.

Culture and learning

The Neuberger Museum of Art at Purchase College, 735 Anderson Hill Road, is open Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 5 p.m., with admission listed as free for now. ADA accessible parking is near the Performing Arts Center, and visitors pay at a pay station.

The Rye Historical Society's Square House Museum and the Rye Arts Center offer the quieter side of town. Rye Seniors adds speakers at its monthly lunches and theater trips, such as Frozen at WPPAC on December 16. The Rye Senior Summit, an annual information day run by the Senior Advocacy Committee, is listed for October 21, 2026.

The senior program calendar

Rye Seniors meets at the Damiano Recreation Center, 281 Midland Avenue, for City of Rye residents age 60 and over. Advance registration is required for all programming, and annual dues are payable in September. The October 2026 calendar lists Movies and Munchies on October 2, a lunch on October 13, a ladies tea on October 19, a shopping trip on October 27 and a Halloween party on October 28.

In summer the Rye Seniors meet at the library for exercise and drop-in games. A Rye Brook resident 55 and over uses the Rye Brook Senior Center, and SPRYE offers Gentle Chair Yoga on Wednesdays at the Crawford Park Mansion in Rye Brook.

How a companion caregiver makes outings happen

Most outings stall on the practical parts: someone to drive, a place to park, the walk from the car, a seat, the wait. A companion handles those. They drive or ride along, drop you at the door, pace the walk to your parent, carry the bag and stay alongside, and they can bring your parent home and see them settled.

Regular outings help too. A weekly companion visit that always includes the library or the nature center gives the week a shape. Tell us the places your parent likes and we will plan the hours around them.
