Things to do with an older parent in Stamford
Easy outings, the parks and beaches and their senior permit rules, museums and gardens, the library, and the Senior Center, with the access details each place publishes and how a caregiver can make the outing happen.
What are good things to do in Stamford with an older parent?
Start short and close to parking. Mill River Park downtown is open all year with an accessible playground and bathrooms, Cove Island and Cummings Park have trails and beaches (permits May 1 to September 30), and the Stamford Museum & Nature Center and Bartlett Arboretum are accessible. The Senior Center is open to anyone 60 and older.
Close to home
Easy outings close to home
The simplest outings are indoors or in a downtown park, close to parking, with somewhere to sit. The Ferguson Library's Main Library at One Public Library Plaza is open seven days a week, Monday to Thursday until 8 PM, and the library says its Main Library has structural accommodations for people with mobility impairments. Mill River Park is open throughout the year, and its Sue McGraw Friendship Playground has a wheelchair accessible merry go round and permanent bathrooms.
Downtown is also where the city holds its holiday events: the Stamford Downtown Parade Spectacular on Sunday, November 22, 2026 and Heights & Lights on December 6, 2026. In a crowd, a caregiver beside your parent, a place to sit and a ride arranged for the way home make the difference.
The water and the parks
The beaches, the parks and the permit rules
Cove Island Park, at 1125 Cove Rd, has a one-mile walk and run trail, a picnic shelter, an expansive lawn and two sandy beaches, including the Cove Island Wildlife Sanctuary. Cummings Park and Beach, on Shippan Ave, is a 79-acre park on Long Island Sound with a beach, pavilions, a snack bar, a boardwalk and a fishing pier.
A beach pass in Stamford is a parking permit. The city requires permits from May 1 to September 30 at Cove Island, Cummings, West Beach, John J. Boccuzzi, Dorothy Heroy and Newman Mills Riverbank Walk Parks. Resident seniors 62 and older who do not drive, and residents with disabilities, may be eligible for a hang tag permit, which can only be used when the holder is a passenger in the vehicle. A senior resident rate applies to vehicles registered in Stamford, and a copy of a driver's license proving age 62 is required for at least one name on the registration.
Permits are handled by Cashiering and Permitting on the 1st floor of the Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd. For questions and accommodations, the city lists cashiering@stamfordct.gov. We did not find trail surface or slope details for the Cove Island trail, so walk a short stretch first.
Museums, gardens and learning
Museums, gardens and the library
The Stamford Museum & Nature Center, at 39 Scofieldtown Road in North Stamford, is open daily, 9 AM to 5 PM, and is wheelchair accessible with accessible parking, entrances and restrooms throughout. It includes Heckscher Farm and the Astronomy Center & Planetarium. Seniors 65 and older are a separate admission category. Its Wheels in the Woods trail is a universally accessible boardwalk that crosses a brook twice, with observation platforms and bird feeders. Confirm trail conditions before you go.
The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens, at 151 Brookdale Road, is 93 acres, open year-round from dawn to dusk, with free admission. Accessible parking is in the main lot next to the Sensory Garden, and restrooms in the Silver Educational Building are open to the public every day. It hosts Third Thursday Walks and Talks led by Master Gardeners.
The Ferguson Library has four branches and a Bookmobile as well as the Main Library. For a parent who cannot get out, Books by Mail for the Homebound mails books for extended loan periods, requested through the Dial-A-Book Librarian.
The Senior Center
The Senior Center calendar
The Stamford Senior Center, on the 2nd floor of the Government Center, is open Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, to anyone 60 and older regardless of where they live. Many programs are live-streamed, so a member can join from home on days when getting out is too much. A caregiver can come along with a member who needs help and must stay with the member at all times.
The center posts a monthly calendar and special events, including a Halloween Celebration and Chili Cookoff and a Senior Health Fair. The pages we read do not show those dates, so ask the center. The Community Cafe serves a reduced-fare weekday lunch, ordered at the front desk between 11 AM and 1 PM, with a one-time registration for first-time diners.
Making it happen
How a companion caregiver can make an outing happen
Most outings fail on logistics, not on interest. A caregiver can help your parent get ready, drive, find the accessible entrance, carry what is needed and set the pace. For the Senior Center, a caregiver can come along and stay with your parent, which the center asks of any caregiver. For SilverSource's free rides to medical appointments, a friend or caregiver must ride along.
Plan one stop at a time, near parking, with somewhere to sit. Leave room to leave early. Tell us what your parent enjoys and when in the day they feel strongest, and we will plan hours that match. Companion care covers company, meals, errands, rides and accompaniment. In Connecticut, hands-on personal care is available too, as is nursing through Endurance Home Health, our separate company.
