  • A parent is coming home from Overlook or Cooperman Barnabas

    Short Hills sits between Overlook in Summit and Cooperman Barnabas in Livingston, the hospital formerly called Saint Barnabas. The day of discharge, the first night and the first week are when a plan matters most. We plan those days with you and cover the hours at home, with a nurse visit before care starts.

  • A spouse has stopped driving

    The Millburn Senior Bus is free for residents 62 and over, runs Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and covers rides within the township, with a booking call at least a day ahead. County Special Transportation needs two business days. A caregiver who drives fills the evenings, the weekends and the trips those rides do not reach.

  • A parent wants to keep going to Friday Friends

    The township's senior programs at the Bauer Community Center, from Friday Friends to Chair Yoga and Canasta, give a week its shape. A companion caregiver can take your parent, stay close and be at home on the days nothing is scheduled.

  • Rehab is next, and you need to choose

    Atlantic Health says patients can choose the skilled nursing facility they want as long as it can care for them and has a bed open, and none of the 11 on its list is in Millburn or Short Hills. We can help you plan the visits, the paperwork days and the return home, and arrange care for the day your parent leaves.

  • Memory is changing: dementia and Alzheimer's care at home

    Alzheimer's New Jersey runs free support groups and a helpline, and SAGE Eldercare's adult day program in Summit offers a structured day. Care at home can cover the mornings before, the hours after and the nights, with caregivers who complete dementia training and a care plan built around the person's routines.

  • You live in the city or farther away

    You cannot stop by on a Tuesday. A registered nurse visits your parent at home and writes the plan with you, and your Care Manager keeps you posted wherever you are. The township's Department of Senior Citizens is the local contact for older residents, and we can work alongside it.

In-home senior care in Short Hills and Millburn, section by section

Short Hills is part of Millburn Township in Essex County, and one township government serves both. The township describes Short Hills as containing the sections of Knollwood, Glenwood, Brookhaven, Country Club, Merrywood, Deerfield-Crossroads, Mountaintop, White Oak Ridge and Old Short Hills Estates. Millburn itself is made up of the historic Wyoming district, South Mountain and Millburn Center.

Short Hills uses ZIP code 07078, and township facilities in Short Hills are also listed under 07041, so don't be surprised if a township form or a map shows either. We arrange care in every section from the office on Morris Turnpike, and the care is the same wherever the front door is. What changes is the help around it. The Millburn Senior Bus and the township's programs are for township residents, which means they apply across Short Hills and Millburn alike.

Millburn's Town Hall is at a temporary location, 22 East Willow Street, open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The Department of Senior Citizens and the Health Department, where the free File of Life card is kept, are there. Confirm where an office is before a parent makes the trip.

Hospitals and coming home

Transitional care: Overlook, Cooperman Barnabas and getting home safely

The hospitals nearest Short Hills are Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center in Summit and Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, formerly Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center is the third in the directory. In an emergency, dial 911; the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad responds in the township and never charges for its services.

Atlantic Health's Leaving the Hospital page, which applies at Overlook and Morristown, says patients receive post-treatment care instructions, medication details and follow-up appointments. Its patient guidance says to discuss and plan for post-discharge needs with your medical team early in the hospital stay. Cooperman Barnabas does not have a going-home page that we could find, so ask the unit's case manager or discharge planner directly.

If your parent needs rehab first, Atlantic Health publishes a list of skilled nursing facilities near its hospitals and says you can choose the facility you want as long as it can care for you and has a bed open. Your care team will usually ask for your top three choices, in case your first pick is full. None of the 11 on that list is in Millburn or Short Hills; they are in Livingston, Maplewood, Chatham, Mountainside, Vauxhall, Florham Park, New Providence, Westfield and Berkeley Heights, and each is listed in the directory below.

  • Before the discharge date

    Ask for the plan in writing and who to call afterward. Find out about equipment, medicines and follow-up appointments, how your parent will get home, and whether a ride to the first appointment is already booked. Choose the days you want a caregiver there.

  • The first night

    The first night home is when questions come up that the discharge papers did not answer. We can have a caregiver there from the moment the car pulls in, with an awake caregiver overnight if you want one.

  • The first week

    Start with more hours, then reduce them as the week steadies. Plan rides to follow-up visits. Millburn's Senior Bus runs within the township, and County Special Transportation takes medical and therapy appointments with at least 2 business days' notice.

  • Where Endurance fits

    We can plan help around the day your mother or father comes home, on hours you set: usually someone there through the first days, then fewer hours as the week steadies, with the rides, the meals and the reminders taken care of. A registered nurse visits first, and your Care Manager keeps you posted.

Choosing a setting

Home care, assisted living, nursing and rehab, adult day

Home care means help in your parent's own home, from a few hours a week to around the clock. Assisted living is an apartment with meals and help with daily routines. Memory care is a setting designed for people with dementia. Skilled nursing and rehab is where a person goes after a hospital stay for nursing care and therapy. Independent living and life plan communities are for people who want to simplify but need little help. Adult day is a program that fills the daytime hours while family works or rests.

The options near Short Hills sit mostly in the next towns over. Assisted living and memory care are in Summit, Livingston and Mountainside, life plan communities in Maplewood and West Caldwell, and the adult day program in Summit. We found no skilled nursing facility inside Millburn or Short Hills on Atlantic Health's list. Confirm current details with any place before you plan around it.

Care at home and a community are not either-or. We can arrange care inside assisted living and other communities, from companion visits to personal care, for a spouse who needs more time with someone or a parent who wants familiar company. Programs and rides

The township's programs, rides and meals

Millburn's Department of Senior Citizens provides information and coordinates programs for older residents, and publishes a Senior Hotline newsletter and a Senior Happenings e-newsletter. The weekly programs are at the Bauer Community Center at Taylor Park: Chair Yoga on Wednesdays, Friday Friends from September to June, Line Dancing on Thursdays, Canasta on Mondays and Wednesdays and a knitting and sewing group. County-wide information is available through NJ EASE.

The Millburn Senior Bus is free for township residents 62 and over and runs Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: 8:30 am to 2:30 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 8:30 am to 12:00 pm on Thursday. It takes riders to medical appointments, grocery shopping, the library, meetings and activities within the township, with monthly shopping trips. Call at least one day ahead between 7:00 and 8:15 am; there is no voicemail. Passengers must board and leave the bus without assistance, though the bus has a lift and an aide may ride with a passenger who has a disability if you give notice.

For appointments outside the township, Essex County Special Transportation takes older and disabled adults to non-emergency medical and therapy appointments with at least 2 business days' notice, and Millburn's transportation page lists other medical transport and NJ Transit Access Link, which requires an eligibility application. For meals, SAGE Eldercare in Summit delivers to Short Hills and Millburn for adults 60 and older who are frail, homebound or disabled, with no income requirement, and Essex County runs its own home-delivered and group meals.

Two more local pieces are worth setting up before they are needed: the free File of Life card for the refrigerator, from the Township Health Department, and the library's free home delivery for residents who cannot get in. A caregiver can fill the hours between all of these, take your parent to a program, go along on the bus or pick up the card and the paperwork.

Places to go

Outings with an older parent around Short Hills

A good outing has a destination, a place to sit and a way home. Around Short Hills, that can mean a garden walk, a library visit, a matinee or a program at the Bauer Community Center. A companion caregiver can drive, pace the day, carry what's needed and stay alongside, so the plan works for a parent who tires or needs an arm on stairs.

Greenwood Gardens on Old Short Hills Road is open this year through November 8, Friday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and buying tickets in advance is recommended. The restored Main Terrace is accessible to all visitors, but the rest of the landscape has uneven terrain and stairs and is not wheelchair or stroller accessible. Accessible parking and restrooms are on the West Terrace, and benches are throughout. The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum on Forest Drive South has wooded trails open dawn to dusk and a building open 9 AM to 4 PM, though it has no parking lot and the trails pass hilly slopes.

South Mountain Reservation, the 2,112-acre county reserve partly in Millburn, has Hemlock Falls, Washington Rock and a closed-to-cars Crest Drive for a leisurely walk down to Washington Rock. The county page does not describe accessibility, so check before you go. Taylor Park in downtown Millburn is beside the Bauer Community Center, and Gero Park in Short Hills has a recreation center, a par 3 golf course and a pool.

Paper Mill Playhouse is mid-renovation through summer 2027, with a four-show season, very limited on-campus parking and a complimentary shuttle from the downtown Millburn municipal lots. The building remains accessible for wheelchairs and mobility devices, and all accessible seating in the auditorium is available; only the mezzanine is inaccessible. Ask about ASL-interpreted, audio-described, open-captioned and autism-friendly performances, assistive listening devices and large-print programs. The library is the easiest outing of all, with museum passes to reserve, large-type books and an elevator.

  • Plan the way in and the way out

    Check parking and the walking distance first. Paper Mill and Cora Hartshorn both have limited parking, so a caregiver who drops your parent at the door and then parks can make the difference.

  • Plan the rest

    Choose a place with benches and a restroom. Greenwood's West Terrace has accessible parking and restrooms, and the library has an elevator.

  • Plan for a quiet afternoon

    Short outings of one stop usually work better than a full day. The Historical Society's smartphone walking tour can be done in sections.

Choosing an agency

How to choose a home care agency in Short Hills

In New Jersey, a firm that employs, places or refers anyone to provide companion, health care or personal care services in the home of a person with a disability or age 60 or older must register as a Health Care Service Firm with the Division of Consumer Affairs. Endurance Home Care is a New Jersey Health Care Service Firm, registration HP0435100. You can check any agency's registration with the Division of Consumer Affairs before you sign.

New Jersey's consumer guide separates the roles. A companion is not certified to provide personal or health care services but may provide light housekeeping and services not related to health care. Personal care, such as bathing, dressing and transferring, is performed by licensed or certified personnel. Ask any agency who will be in the home, what that person is trained and certified to do, and who supervises. The same guide says that if you hire an individual privately, meaning someone who is neither certified nor employed by a New Jersey-licensed home healthcare services agency, you are required by law to pay withholding taxes, Social Security and disability payments, and that this individual will not have undergone a criminal history background check.

A registered nurse visits at home and writes the care plan with you, we choose a caregiver for the person and introduce them before the first visit, and your Care Manager keeps you posted. Caregivers have background checks, reference checks and verified qualifications before hire, orientation before the first shift and training every month. A backup plan is written into the care plan.

Cost

What sets the cost of care in Short Hills, and how families pay

Endurance doesn't publish prices, because the cost depends on the schedule, the kind of help and the hours. A few hours of companion help a week is a different arrangement from overnight care, live-in care or awake 24-hour care, and a plan that needs hands-on personal care differs from companion care alone. We explain the options on a first call, which is free.

For a market reference only, the CareScout (Genworth) Cost of Care Survey 2025 puts the New Jersey median for an in-home caregiver at $38 an hour, against $35 nationally. That figure is a market median and is separate from any Endurance rate.

Endurance is private pay and does not accept insurance directly. Families with a long-term care insurance policy can use it, and we help with the paperwork. Medicare does not pay for 24-hour care at home or for custodial or personal care when that is the only care needed, and it covers home health only alongside skilled care for people who are homebound. Medicare and most health insurance don't pay for long-term care, including a nursing home or care in the community. Essex County's Respite Care Program gives qualifying caregivers a break, with a co-pay based on income.

Your Care Manager keeps you posted as the plan changes, so you aren't the one chasing news. Millburn's Department of Senior Citizens is the township's contact for older residents, SAGE Eldercare's social worker offers free care planning help, and Jewish Family Service of MetroWest offers free telephone Care Consultation for family caregivers.

Yes. Our New Jersey office is at 788 Morris Turnpike, Suite 201, in Short Hills. We arrange companion care and personal care by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. Do you offer live-in care in Short Hills?

Atlantic Health's guide to skilled nursing facilities near its hospitals shows 11, in Livingston, Maplewood, Chatham, Mountainside, Vauxhall, Florham Park, New Providence, Westfield and Berkeley Heights. Patients can choose a facility that can care for them and has a bed open. Confirm current details with each one.

What is the difference between assisted living and care at home?

Assisted living is an apartment in a community with meals and help with daily routines, and your parent moves there. Care at home brings the help to your parent's own house. Some people use both: a caregiver can visit a parent in assisted living for extra company or hands-on help.

How do I choose a home care agency in Short Hills?

Start with registration. In New Jersey, a firm that places caregivers in a home for someone age 60 or older must register as a Health Care Service Firm; ours is HP0435100. Then ask who visits first, who keeps the family informed, how a caregiver is chosen and what the backup plan is.

Are you a private home care agency?

Yes. Endurance is private pay and does not bill insurance directly. Families with a long-term care insurance policy can use it, and we help with the paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. The first conversation is free, and nothing starts until you say so.

What does home care cost in Short Hills?

We don't publish prices, because the cost depends on the schedule, the kind of help and the hours. For a market reference only, the CareScout (Genworth) 2025 survey puts the New Jersey median for an in-home caregiver at $38 an hour. We'll explain the options on a free first call.

Is there adult day care near Short Hills?

SAGE Eldercare's Spend-A-Day program at 290 Broad Street in Summit is a licensed medical adult day program serving Summit, Springfield and nearby Union County towns, with meals, nursing support and therapists on site. The state's Alzheimer's adult day subsidy lists no Essex County center. Ask SAGE whether it serves your address.

Can you help someone living with dementia?

Yes. Our caregivers complete dementia training, and our nurses hold the eight-hour Certified Dementia Educator certification. The care plan is built around the person's routines and the things that help them feel settled, and it changes as their needs do. Alzheimer's New Jersey runs free caregiver support groups.

I live out of state. Can I arrange care for my mother in Short Hills?

Yes. Send a request with her town and your phone number or email, and we'll call to talk it through. A registered nurse then visits your mother at home and writes the care plan with you. Once care begins, your Care Manager keeps you posted, so you know how things are going wherever you are.
