Home care in Maplewood

The median Maplewood home was built in 1938. That figure ties with Montclair, Glen Ridge and Bronxville for the oldest housing stock anywhere in our three-state coverage, and unlike a median that sits at 1960 it describes a uniform kind of building.

A 1938 house in this township is typically a colonial or a tudor with a narrow staircase, a turn partway up, and a banister on one side only. The bathroom is on the first floor above ground. The bath is a bath. Doorways are narrower than modern ones, which becomes relevant the first time somebody needs a walking frame through them. There are steps down to a basement where the laundry lives.

These are handsome, well-built houses and people are attached to them for good reasons. They were also designed for a household that took stairs without thinking about it, and the first thing that becomes difficult in a Maplewood house is nearly always the staircase rather than the person on it.

Our assessment walks that staircase rather than asking about it, because a turn with a rail on one side is a materially different problem from a straight run with rails on both, and the difference decides whether a morning takes one person or two.

Of Maplewood's 25,613 residents, 3,022 are aged 65 or over. At 11.8 per cent that is the lowest proportion of any town we cover in New Jersey, well below New Providence at 23.2 and Caldwell at 18.7.

The reason is not that older people leave. It is that Maplewood is a town people move into with young children, drawn by the train, the houses and the schools, and that influx keeps the proportion down even as the absolute number stays substantial. Three thousand people is not a small population.

It does produce a particular situation for the people who have been here longest. They are living in the oldest housing in the state we cover, and they are doing it surrounded by neighbours a generation or two behind them: households with school runs, both parents working, and no spare capacity on a Tuesday morning.

That is a specific kind of isolation and it is easy to miss, because from the outside the street looks busy and social. A parent in Maplewood is often surrounded by activity that is organised around the school calendar, on a street where the informal help an older neighbourhood provides has quietly turned over.

Our New Jersey office is at 788 Morris Turnpike in Short Hills, which is roughly ten minutes from most Maplewood addresses. That is the shortest distance between us and any town in our New Jersey coverage.

The practical consequence is not marketing. It is that a Care Manager can be at a house the same morning when something is not working, and that a caregiver who has to cover at short notice does not have a forty-minute drive standing between the call and the arrival. Short-notice cover is where home care arrangements actually fail, and proximity is the thing that most reliably prevents it.

Maplewood also has its own township provision at the DeHart centre on Burnett Avenue, with Essex County's Division of Senior Services behind it at 900 Bloomfield Avenue in Verona. Both are worth using and both run weekday daytime hours.

So the honest shape here is the same as elsewhere in Essex and the numbers are better: use the township and county provision for what it covers, and buy the evenings, weekends and the fortnight after something changes. In Maplewood those hours are easier for us to staff than anywhere else in the state.
