  • A parent is coming home from Greenwich Hospital

    The hospital says discharge planning starts the day of admission and that discharge is after breakfast, which leaves a family a short window to arrange the ride, the first meal and the first night. We plan the day of discharge and the first 72 hours with you, then stay for the hours the family cannot cover.

  • A spouse has stopped driving

    Call-A-Ride is free for residents 60 and older and should be booked a week or two ahead, and TAG Dial-A-Ride needs a day's notice. A caregiver who drives and stays alongside covers the trips those programs cannot fit, including the short-notice ones.

  • A parent is finishing rehab at The Nathaniel Witherell

    A stay in short-term rehab ends with a return to a house that was not set up for recovery. We meet you before the move, plan the first days at home and cover the routines that matter, from meals to the walk to the mailbox.

  • A parent wants to keep going to Wallace Center programs

In-home senior care across Greenwich's villages

Greenwich is one town made of several villages, each with its own ZIP code and its own rhythm. Our office is at 60 Long Ridge Road in Stamford, the town next door, and a registered nurse comes to your parent's home for the first visit wherever in Greenwich it is. Caregivers come to you.

The villages matter for practical reasons. The town says Wallace Center programs are transitioning to civic centers in Old Greenwich and Glenville, the library branches sit in Byram and Cos Cob, and the beaches are at opposite ends of town. Knowing which village your parent lives in tells you which of these is nearest.

    Downtown around Greenwich Avenue, Town Hall at 101 Field Point Road and Greenwich Hospital at 5 Perryridge Road. Greenwich Common Park, Bruce Park and the Bruce Museum are close by, so a parent who lives here can often walk to a bench or a coffee with a companion alongside.

Coming home

Transitional care: coming home from Greenwich Hospital or a rehab stay

Greenwich Hospital, at 5 Perryridge Road, is a 206-bed regional hospital serving Fairfield County, Connecticut and Westchester County, New York. Its own Discharge and Going Home page says: "At Greenwich Hospital, plans for a safe discharge begin the day you are admitted." Nurse case managers work with the patient and caregiver, and the needs the team assesses include transportation on the day of discharge, Meals on Wheels, homemaker and companion services, home care (visiting nurse, home health aide, therapy and social services), rehabilitation facility placement or referral, skilled nursing placement, equipment and prescriptions.

Two details on that page help you plan. Discharge time is after breakfast, so the ride and the first meal need to be settled the evening before. And the hospital asks families to tell the nurse about discharge needs as soon as possible, which is the moment to say you want home care arranged. If your parent is at Stamford Hospital instead, its Care Management team works Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and its page describes a Fairfield County service area without naming Greenwich.

  • Before the discharge date

    Ask the case manager for the likely date and whether your parent will go home or to rehab. Confirm the ride, equipment and prescriptions. If the hospital is recommending a rehabilitation or skilled nursing placement, The Nathaniel Witherell offers short-term rehab about 8 minutes away (a routing estimate). Have the first night's plan written down: who is there, where the medications are kept, who to call.

  • The day of discharge and the first night

    Discharge is after breakfast, so the afternoon and evening are the long hours. We can have a caregiver at the house when your parent arrives, help with the first meal and settling in, and stay through the evening or overnight. The first night is the one families worry about most, and it is easy to cover.

  • The first week

    Meals on Wheels of Greenwich requires only Greenwich residency and delivers on weekdays. For follow-up appointments, Call-A-Ride recommends calling a week or two ahead, and TAG Dial-A-Ride needs a reservation at least one day ahead. Our Endurance Homebound plan sets out the first 72 hours after discharge, and the planner walks you through it hour by hour.

  • Where Endurance fits

    In Connecticut we offer hospital-to-home care: companion care and personal care at home from the day of discharge, by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. Skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company that provides them in Connecticut only, and can work alongside your caregiver.

Comparing settings

Assisted living, memory care, nursing and rehab, and adult day in Greenwich

Home care, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehab, independent living and adult day are different answers to different questions. Home care brings help to the house your parent knows. Assisted living is an apartment in a residence with personal care from staff. Memory care is a residence built around memory support. Skilled nursing and rehab is clinical care, often for a short stay after a hospital visit. Independent living is housing, sometimes with meals and activities. Adult day is a daytime program that lets your parent sleep at home.

In Greenwich, the state's list of licensed Assisted Living Service Agencies includes The Mews, in downtown Greenwich, and The Greens at Greenwich, a memory care community on King Street. Parsonage Cottage and Hill House are senior residences that are not on that state list, so ask each how it is licensed. Edgehill, Atria Stamford and Brighton Gardens of Stamford are in Stamford, and Atria Darien is in Darien; those are the nearest Atria communities we found.

For skilled nursing and rehab, The Nathaniel Witherell, owned by the Town of Greenwich since 1903, offers short-term rehabilitation and long-term nursing care, with a separate Memory Care Unit. For adult day, River House in Cos Cob is a medical model program with a registered nurse always on site. Our senior living page compares them side by side and lists questions to ask on a tour.

What the town offers

Greenwich's senior programs, rides and meals, and how a caregiver fills the hours between

The Wallace Center, run by the Greenwich Commission on Aging, is the town's senior center, and the town says its programs are transitioning to the Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center (90 Harding Road, Old Greenwich) and the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center (449 Pemberwick Road, Glenville) ahead of upcoming renovations at 299 Greenwich Avenue. Membership is free for Greenwich residents 55 and older, and transportation is available. Registration is online through MyActiveCenter. Check the Wallace Center calendar before sending anyone to the Avenue.

Rides are where most families need a plan. Each program has its own booking rule: Call-A-Ride asks for a week or two of notice and cannot guarantee a same-day ride, and TAG Dial-A-Ride needs a reservation at least one day ahead. A caregiver can book the ride, go along and stay through the appointment or class.

  • Call-A-Ride

    Free volunteer rides to and from anywhere in Greenwich for residents 60 and older. Call a week or two ahead; same-day rides are not guaranteed.

  • TAG Dial-A-Ride

    Door to door for Greenwich residents over 60 or disabled. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead. Easy Access van service is for people with a disability who cannot use the public bus and requires ADA certification.

  • Share-the-Fare

    A subsidized program with Greenwich Taxi and Uber for residents 62 and older who meet the eligibility criteria. One person per household can be eligible, and vouchers and cards are only available in person. Confirm the sale location while Wallace Center programs are relocated.

  • The 2026 Transportation Guide

    The Commission on Aging's one-page table of Call-A-Ride, Access Ambulance, TAG, Norwalk Transit, CT Transit and Greenwich Taxi. Print it and keep it by the phone.

  • Meals-on-Wheels of Greenwich

    Volunteers deliver meals Monday to Friday, usually between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.. The only requirement is Greenwich residency. Dietary options include diabetic friendly, low lactose, bland, chopped and pureed. A caregiver can be there when the meal arrives and sit down to it with your parent.

  • River House Adult Day Center

    In Cos Cob, a non-profit medical model program, open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a registered nurse always on site and its own escorted, ADA accessible transportation within Greenwich and Stamford. Home care covers the morning routine before the van arrives and the evening after.

  • Greenwich Hospital's caregiver groups

    The Family Caregiver Support Group (Alzheimer's and dementia) meets the first and third Thursday of each month, 1:00 to 2:15 p.m., and the Women's Spousal Support Group meets the second and fourth Thursdays. The Family Caregiver group is limited to 10 members. A caregiver at home can cover that afternoon.

  • At Home in Greenwich and JFS

    At Home in Greenwich is a membership organization for residents 60 and older, with volunteers for rides to medical appointments, prescription pick-ups and small jobs, plus a free home safety assessment. JFS of Greenwich, at 67 Holly Hill Lane, offers Compassionate Companions volunteer escorts to medical appointments and a grocery program for homebound seniors.

  • Human Services, Medicare counseling and tax relief

    Greenwich Human Services has managers who specialize in elder services, with energy assistance and homemaker services based on need and income. The Commission on Aging runs free, confidential Medicare counseling, and homeowners 65 and older may qualify for two property tax credit programs.

  • Greenwich Alerts

    The town's emergency notification system. Text 'Greenwich' to '888-777', enroll by community profile or use the Everbridge app, and add a family member's number to a parent's alerts.

Beyond appointments

Places to go with an older parent in Greenwich

A good outing is short, close to parking and has somewhere to sit. Greenwich has plenty that fit. Bruce Park surrounds the Bruce Museum, so a walk by the ponds and an hour inside share one trip. Greenwich Common Park on the Avenue has chess tables and a walking track. Binney Park in Old Greenwich has stone bridges and a gazebo. The Cos Cob and Byram library branches are small enough to manage.

The beaches have pass rules. Greenwich Point (Tod's Point) and Byram Park require park passes or tickets, so check the town's current season dates. Island Beach needs ferry tickets and beach passes. Residents 65 and older with a Senior OnePass Park option do not need to prove residency every year; the pass runs for a five-year cycle currently ending December 31, 2030. The town lists an ADA beach mat and a beach wheelchair at Greenwich Point, but confirm availability with Parks & Recreation first.

Choosing help

Choosing a home care agency in Greenwich

If you are comparing home care agencies in Greenwich, or searching for private home care agencies near you, a few checks tell you most of what you need. In Connecticut, an agency that provides companion or homemaker services must be registered with the Department of Consumer Protection before it operates. The statutes are Connecticut General Statutes sections 20-670 to 20-682, and you can verify any agency's registration at CT eLicense.

Endurance Home Care is a Connecticut Homemaker-Companion Agency, registration HCA.0002450. Our office is at 60 Long Ridge Road, Suite 214, Stamford, CT 06902. Registration is not a state endorsement of quality, and the Department says so. Home health care agencies licensed by the Department of Public Health are a different category that provides nursing; ours comes from Endurance Home Health, a separate company that provides it in Connecticut only.

  • Is it an agency or a registry?

    An agency places its own employees. A registry matches independent caregivers, and the family may be treated as the employer, with tax and workers' compensation duties. Connecticut requires registries to give the family a signed notice about this.

  • What does the written plan say?

    Within seven days of starting service Connecticut requires a written contract or service plan with the scope, frequency and cost of services. The Department of Consumer Protection says it should list job categories such as live-in or daily call. Ask to see it before you sign. You can cancel a contract that has no fixed duration, and rate changes need 60 days' written notice for the same level or type of services.

  • How are caregivers screened?

    State law requires a full background check before hire, including the sex offender registry and a nationwide criminal check. Ask about references and training too. At Endurance, references are checked, qualifications verified and an orientation held before a caregiver's first shift.

  • Who do you call?

    At Endurance, a registered nurse visits at home and writes the care plan with your family. A Care Manager keeps you updated and adjusts the plan as needs change. Ask any agency who that person is.

  • Will you meet the caregiver first?

    We choose a caregiver with your parent's routines and preferences in mind and introduce them before the first visit. If it is not working, we find someone else.

  • Is there training for memory changes?

    If there are memory concerns, ask whether caregivers have training for dementia and other long-term conditions, and who oversees them once they are on the job. At Endurance, caregivers take three-hour dementia sessions, and our nurses hold the eight-hour Certified Dementia Educator certification.

  • What happens when needs change?

    Needs change without warning. Ask how the agency adds hours, moves from part-time help to live-in, covers weekends and holidays, and covers a caregiver's day off. At Endurance, a backup plan is written into the care plan, and your Care Manager adjusts the plan with you.

  • What is included in the price?

    Ask for a breakdown of what is included, any minimum hours or contract terms, and how billing and cancellation work, then check those against the written plan Connecticut requires.

Paying for care

What sets the cost of care, and how families pay

Cost depends on the hours, the schedule and the kind of help. An hour of companion care, a block of overnight hours, a live-in arrangement and awake 24-hour shifts are priced differently, and personal care adds hands-on help. We do not publish prices. We talk through your parent's week first and then explain how it would be priced.

Endurance Home Care is private pay and does not accept insurance directly. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. Its home health benefit covers part-time or intermittent skilled care for people who are homebound, and it does not cover 24-hour care at home or custodial care when that is the only care needed. Long-term care insurance can help with personal and custodial care at home, and if your parent has a policy we help with the paperwork. Veterans may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, an add-on to a VA pension.

Greenwich has local help with costs. Call-A-Ride is free for residents 60 and older, Share-the-Fare subsidizes taxi and Uber rides for residents 62 and older, Meals-on-Wheels of Greenwich requires only residency, Human Services handles energy assistance and homemaker services based on need and income, the Commission on Aging offers free Medicare counseling, and homeowners 65 and older may qualify for property tax credit programs.

Family at a distance

Arranging care for a parent in Greenwich from somewhere else

Many of the people who call us live in the city or farther away and are managing a parent's care by phone. A few things make that workable. Start with a call, and let the nurse's first visit at home set the plan with you listening in. Ask your Care Manager how you will be updated.

Add your own number to the town's Greenwich Alerts, which allow a home phone, cell phone, text or email. Ask your parent whether At Home in Greenwich fits, since its volunteers help with rides and prescription pick-ups. When there is a hospital stay, ask the case manager to include you in the discharge conversation, so a caregiver who knows the routine can be there on the day.

Greenwich Hospital is in town. Stamford Hospital is the next hospital east of Greenwich.

Where is the Wallace Center now, and can a caregiver take my parent?

The town says Wallace Center programs are transitioning to the Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center, 90 Harding Road in Old Greenwich, and the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center, 449 Pemberwick Road in Glenville, ahead of upcoming renovations at 299 Greenwich Avenue. Membership is free for residents 55 and older. A companion caregiver can take your parent, stay nearby and bring them home.

How do rides for seniors work in Greenwich?

Call-A-Ride is free for residents 60 and older, and you should call a week or two ahead. TAG Dial-A-Ride is door to door for residents over 60 or disabled, booked at least a day ahead. Share-the-Fare subsidizes Greenwich Taxi and Uber rides for residents 62 and older. The town's 2026 Transportation Guide lists all of them on one page.

Is there assisted living in Greenwich, CT?

Yes. In Greenwich, the state's list of licensed assisted living agencies includes The Mews, in downtown Greenwich, and The Greens at Greenwich, a memory care community. It depends on what the day looks like and what your parent wants. Some people want to keep their house and routines, and others want a place that handles meals and company. Is there adult day care in Greenwich?

Yes. River House Adult Day Center in Cos Cob is a non-profit medical model program open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a registered nurse always on site. It runs its own door-to-door transportation within Greenwich and Stamford. A caregiver can cover the hours around the program.

Can you add care while my parent is at The Nathaniel Witherell or in assisted living?

In Connecticut, yes. Endurance provides companion care and personal care inside assisted living and other communities, for company, mealtimes and the evenings. Ask the community how it works with outside caregivers, as policies differ. When your parent is ready to come home, we plan the move and the first days with you.

How do I choose a home care agency in Greenwich?

Check that the agency is registered with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, and verify it at CT eLicense. Ask whether it places its own employees or acts as a registry, to see the written service plan, how caregivers are screened and who you call. Endurance is HCA.0002450, with a nurse visit first and a Care Manager.

Are you a private home care agency?

Yes. Endurance Home Care is private pay and does not accept insurance directly. Families pay for the hours of care they arrange. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we help with the paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home, and we explain how a plan would be priced once we know the schedule.

What does home care cost in Greenwich?

We do not publish prices, because cost depends on the schedule, the hours and whether the help is companion care or personal care. Hourly, overnight, live-in and 24-hour care are priced differently. We talk through your parent's week first and then explain the cost. Local help such as free Call-A-Ride rides and Meals-on-Wheels can reduce what you need to buy.

I live out of town. Can I arrange care for my mother in Greenwich?

Yes. Tell us where she lives and what help she needs, and we talk through the options by phone. A registered nurse visits her at home and writes the plan with you. Once care begins, your Care Manager keeps you updated, so you know how things are going even when you cannot be there.

Can we start with a few hours and add more later?

Yes. Hourly care can be a few mornings a week or full days, and it is easy to add to. If the nights get harder, we can add overnight care or talk about live-in or 24-hour care. Your Care Manager updates the plan with you as needs change.
