  • A parent is coming home from Stamford or Norwalk Hospital

    The hospitals we checked are Stamford Hospital and Northwell Norwalk Hospital, each about 10 or 11 minutes from Town Hall. Some stays continue with rehab in Stamford, Norwalk or New Canaan before home. We plan the ride home, the first night and the first week with you, and cover the hours at home.

  • A spouse has stopped driving

    At Home in Darien gives door-to-door rides to Darien, Stamford, Norwalk and New Canaan, Monday to Thursday from 9 AM to 4 PM and Friday from 9 AM to 1 PM, and half-price taxi vouchers cover evenings and weekends. A rider who cannot get in and out alone needs an aide or caregiver along. A caregiver can be that person, and can drive when the ride service is not running.

  • A parent loves the Mather Center, but the day is longer than the program

    Darien Senior Programs at the Mather Center offers noon lunch, classes and a monthly Caregiver Support Group for people 55 and older, and it closes mid-afternoon. A companion caregiver can get your parent there, stay close, and be at home with them for the rest of the day, including the days the center is closed.

  • A fall has changed how the house feels

    At Home in Darien offers free in-home fall safety evaluations for Darien seniors, and the town's Loan Closet lends walkers, canes and wheelchairs. Once the house is set up, many families add a caregiver for the hours that feel risky, such as getting up at night, bathing and the stairs.

  • Memory is changing: dementia and Alzheimer's care at home

    The nearest adult day programs are Waveny's Navigator program in New Canaan, ElderHouse in Norwalk and River House in Cos Cob, and the Mather Center runs a monthly Caregiver Support Group. Home care can cover the mornings before a program, the hours after it and the nights.

Darien is one town, and every town and organization address we checked uses ZIP code 06820. We could not confirm ZIP codes with the Postal Service, so use the one on your parent's mail. Our office is at 60 Long Ridge Road in Stamford, the next town over, which means we are there before the traffic is. The registered nurse comes to your parent's home for the first visit wherever in Darien it is.

Noroton, Noroton Heights and Tokeneke are sections of Darien. Our sources describe them only lightly, so we say only what they support.

  • Noroton

    A section of Darien with its own volunteer fire department and Noroton Avenue. Baker Park, off Noroton Avenue, has a playscape, a field and a wooded walking trail.

  • Tokeneke

    A neighborhood of Darien. The Darien Land Trust owns the 21-acre Tokeneke Preserve of woods and meadow inside the Tokeneke Association, and the page does not state public access, so confirm before you plan a walk there.

  • Downtown and the Post Road

    Municipal parking, Darien Library at 1441 Post Road, the Museum of Darien's Heritage Trail and Maplewood at Darien at 599 Post Road. For a parent who lives close in, a companion can walk to the library instead of driving.

  • The Town Hall campus

    Town Hall, the Mather Center, Human Services, At Home in Darien and the Darien Arts Center are all at 2 Renshaw Road, at the corner of Route 1. One trip can cover a social worker, lunch and a class.

  • The shoreline

    Weed Beach is at 155 Nearwater Lane, just off Route 1, and Pear Tree Point Beach is at 135 Pear Tree Point Road. Both are town beaches with a free Senior Resident emblem for residents.

Coming home

Transitional care: coming home from the hospital or a rehab stay

The hospitals we checked are next door. Stamford Hospital is about 11 minutes by car from Town Hall and Northwell Norwalk Hospital about 10, both routing estimates. Norwalk Hospital is now part of Northwell Health. Each describes a discharge process you can start early, so ask the case manager for the likely discharge date as soon as you can, and say you want home care arranged.

We did not find a nursing home in Darien in the Connecticut state registry. If a stay continues with rehab, the nearest are in Stamford, Norwalk and New Canaan, and our directory lists them with towns and drive times.

  • Stamford Hospital

    Care managers and social workers help with care coordination and discharge planning, including home services, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, equipment and transportation. The care management office is open Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM, and evenings and weekends an on-call social worker is reached through the hospital main line. You can download the Patient Handbook before a stay.

  • Northwell Norwalk Hospital

    Its patient guide says case managers coordinate with the care team on services for recovery, and the discharge planner can give you information about local agencies for transportation, equipment, home care and respite care. If your parent may need a rehab facility or nursing home, the guide advises speaking with the nurse or physician before leaving.

  • Before the discharge date

    Ask whether a short rehab stay is planned. Arrange the ride home, because discharge day is when a family needs a driver who can stay: the At Home in Darien ride service runs weekdays and asks riders who cannot get in and out alone to bring an aide or caregiver. Borrow a walker or wheelchair from the Loan Closet at Human Services. Ask the discharge planner what follow-up appointments to expect.

  • The first night and the first week

    The first night can be the hardest. A caregiver can be there when your parent arrives, set up the room, make the first meal and stay through the night. Through the first week a caregiver can drive to follow-up appointments, remind your parent of medications on the schedule the doctor set, and tell the family how the days went.

  • Where Endurance fits

    Endurance provides hospital-to-home care in Connecticut, with a plan for the first 72 hours after discharge. Skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company that provides them in Connecticut only.

Choosing a setting

Home care, assisted living, memory care, nursing and rehab, and adult day

These settings do different jobs, and a family sometimes uses more than one. Home care brings help into your parent's own house, at the hours you choose. Assisted living is a residence where staff provide personal care and monitoring through the day. Memory care is a residence built around memory support. Skilled nursing and rehab is a medical setting for recovery or long-term nursing needs. Independent living is housing with meals and services. Adult day is a program your parent attends and then returns home from.

In Darien itself there are three communities. Maplewood at Darien on the Post Road offers assisted living and a separate memory care program. The Residence at Selleck's Woods, an LCB Senior Living community, offers independent living, assisted living, memory care and respite stays. Atria Darien on Ledge Road lists assisted living and independent living only, with no memory care on its Darien page.

We did not find a nursing home in Darien. The nearest we verified are in Stamford (Stamford Care Center, Ark Healthcare Rehabilitation at St. Camillus, Civita Care Center at Long Ridge, The Villa at Stamford and Edgehill), Norwalk (Norwalk Care Center, Notre Dame Convalescent Homes and Autumn Lake Healthcare at Norwalk) and New Canaan (Waveny Care Center). The nearest adult day programs are Waveny's Navigator program in New Canaan, ElderHouse in Norwalk and River House in Cos Cob.

Endurance can work alongside a community. In Connecticut we provide companion care and personal care inside assisted living and other communities, and a caregiver your parent already knows can come with them. Skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company that provides them in Connecticut only.

The town's own network

What Darien already offers, and the hours between

Darien runs a real aging-in-place network, and it is worth building on. None of these programs is affiliated with Endurance Home Care. We name them because a plan that uses them well is more likely to last.

At Home in Darien is the senior ride service, and its rules are the useful part. Rides run Monday to Thursday, 9 AM to 4 PM and Friday, 9 AM to 1 PM, and you book by calling with the day, time and destination. The fleet is a sedan and a wheelchair-accessible minivan. Riders who cannot operate their own wheelchair or get in and out of the home or vehicle alone must be accompanied by an aide or caregiver. That is where a caregiver fits, riding along and staying with your parent at the appointment.

The gaps are the evenings, the weekends and anywhere outside Darien, Stamford, Norwalk and New Canaan. Half-price taxi vouchers from At Home in Darien cover some of those trips, and a caregiver who drives covers the rest.

  • At Home in Darien

    Every Darien resident 60 or older is automatically a member at no cost. Beyond rides, it offers free in-home fall safety evaluations and volunteers for visiting, grocery shopping, small tasks around the house, friendly calls, and seasonal leaf raking or snow shoveling. A caregiver handles the daily hours volunteers do not.

  • The Mather Center

    Darien Senior Programs at the Mather Center, 2 Renshaw Road, is for people 55 and older. It serves lunch at noon, with reservations made by phone for the week ahead, and runs exercise, crafts, games and education classes and a monthly Caregiver Support Group. The November 2026 newsletter lists Monday to Thursday, 9 AM to 3 PM and Friday, 9 AM to 2:30 PM, and other sources differ, so check the current newsletter. A caregiver can bring your parent, sit nearby and bring them home.

  • Human Services

    Town Hall Room 109 offers counseling, benefits assessment and case management to any Darien resident. Its director is the town's Municipal Agent for the elderly. It keeps the Emergency Call List of vulnerable seniors and disabled residents the town contacts before a storm, and the Loan Closet, which lends wheelchairs, transport chairs, walkers and canes at no charge. Human Services is open Monday to Thursday and closed Fridays.

  • The library

    Darien Library has large print books, audiobooks and a Cognitive Change Collection of large-text adult books and borrowable book kits for people with dementia and their caregivers. The Route 341 bus stops in front. A caregiver can read a kit with your parent at home.

  • Meals

    The Mather Center lunch is the in-town meal for members. Catholic Charities runs Meals on Wheels and senior cafes in greater Stamford and Norwalk, and Darien is not named on its page, so confirm your address. A caregiver can cook the other days and notice if meals are going uneaten.

  • Safety and records

    Add your parent to the Emergency Call List and register for Alerts 06820, the town's emergency alert system. Residents who cannot use a computer or text can register on a paper form at Town Hall. Add a family number to the alerts.

  • Caregiver support

    The Mather Center's Caregiver Support Group meets monthly. The Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter has a 24/7 Helpline, and the Center for HOPE in Darien offers therapy for people dealing with caretaking and loss.

Putting it together

What a day can look like when a caregiver fills the gaps

Think of this as an illustration that nobody has to follow. It uses the published hours of the programs above, which change, so check each one. The ride pieces here are At Home in Darien and its taxi vouchers.

  • Early morning, at home

    Breakfast, getting dressed, medications taken on the schedule the doctor set, and the walker by the bed. This is the hour no program covers, and the one a caregiver handles first.

  • Mid-morning, the ride

    At Home in Darien rides start at 9 AM Monday to Friday. A caregiver can ride along, which the service asks of riders who cannot get in and out alone, walk your parent into the appointment and write down what the doctor said.

  • Noon, lunch at the Mather Center

    The cafe opens at 11:45 and lunch is served at noon, with a reservation made earlier in the week. Your parent has company, and the caregiver can wait nearby or run an errand and come back.

  • Afternoon, a class or a walk

    A class at the Mather Center, an hour at the library, or a short walk at Tilley Pond Park or Cherry Lawn Park. The Mather Center's hours end by 3 PM Monday to Thursday and 2:30 PM on Friday in the November 2026 newsletter, so this is when the day usually goes back home.

  • Evenings, nights and weekends

    The ride service has no evening or weekend hours, and the Mather Center works weekdays and Human Services is closed on Fridays. Taxi vouchers can cover a trip, and overnight, live-in or 24-hour care covers the rest, along with family. Many families choose who is on and when, and write it down.

  • Fridays and closures

    Rides end at 1 PM on Fridays, the Mather Center closes at 2:30 PM, and Town Hall, including Human Services, is closed on Fridays and holidays. These are the days to plan a caregiver for, so the routine does not lose a day.

Beyond appointments

Places to go with an older parent

A good outing is short, close to parking and has somewhere to sit. Darien's town beaches are the obvious first idea. Weed Beach and Pear Tree Point Beach both issue a free Senior Resident emblem, one per family, to Darien residents and real estate taxpayers, with proof of residency and current vehicle registration. Pear Tree Point has a handicap accessible picnic area and a gazebo overlooking the sound. Weed Beach has a concession stand, a bathhouse and a fit trail. The 2026 season has ended and 2027 dates were not yet published on October 22, 2026, so check the town page in spring.

For the rest of the year, the library is open seven days, Tilley Pond Park and Cherry Lawn Park have gazebos and ponds, and Stony Brook Park has benches around a waterfall. The Town Hall fields have an accessible pathway. The town pages do not describe trail surfaces for the preserves, so try a short stretch first. The Museum of Darien is open Tuesday to Thursday, 11 AM to 4 PM; call ahead if your parent needs special assistance.

Choosing help

Choosing a home care agency in Darien

If you are comparing home care agencies in Darien, or searching for private home care agencies near you, a few checks tell you most of what you need. In Connecticut, an agency that provides companion or homemaker services has to be registered with the Department of Consumer Protection before it operates. The state publishes the rules in Connecticut General Statutes sections 20-670 to 20-680.

Endurance Home Care is a Connecticut Homemaker-Companion Agency, registration HCA.0002450, a Stamford agency licensed by the state, with our office at 60 Long Ridge Road, Suite 214, Stamford, CT 06902. Registration is not a state endorsement of quality, and the statute says so. You can verify any agency's registration at CT eLicense.

Home health care agencies licensed by the Department of Public Health are a different category: they provide nursing. Our skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company that provides them in Connecticut only.

  • Is it an agency or a registry?

    An agency places its own employees. A registry matches independent caregivers, and the family may be treated as the employer, with tax and workers' compensation duties. Connecticut requires registries to give the family a signed notice about this.

  • What does the written plan say?

    Connecticut requires a written contract or service plan within 7 days of starting service, 60 days' written notice for rate changes for the same level or type of services, and lets a client cancel a contract with no fixed duration. Ask to see the plan before you sign.

  • How are caregivers screened?

    State law requires a full background check, including the sex offender registry and a nationwide criminal check, before hire. Ask about references and training too. Endurance checks references, verifies qualifications, and runs orientation before a caregiver's first shift.

  • Who do you call?

    A registered nurse comes to the house in Darien, listens to everyone and writes the care plan with your family. Your Care Manager keeps you posted and adjusts the plan as needs change, wherever you happen to be that week. Call our Client Support Line and a person answers this line.

  • Will you meet the caregiver first?

    We choose a caregiver for the person and introduce them before the first visit. If it is not working, we find someone else.

Paying for care

What sets the cost of care, and how families pay

Cost depends on the hours, the schedule and the kind of help. An hour of companion care, a block of overnight hours, a live-in arrangement and awake 24-hour shifts are priced differently, and personal care adds hands-on help. We do not publish prices. We talk through your parent's week first and then explain how it would be priced.

For a market reference rather than our rate, the CareScout (Genworth) 2025 Cost of Care Survey puts the Connecticut median for an in-home caregiver at $36 an hour, and the national median at $35. Providers' prices can differ from the median.

Endurance Home Care is private pay and does not accept insurance directly. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. Its home health benefit covers part-time skilled care for people who are homebound, and Medicare does not cover 24-hour care, or custodial care when it is the only care needed. Long-term care insurance can cover personal and custodial care at home, usually as a daily amount up to a limit. If your parent has a policy, bring it to the consultation: we read it with you, sentence by sentence, and tell you what it covers and what it doesn't. Veterans may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, an add-on to a VA pension.

Darien has local help too. At Home in Darien membership is free for residents 60 and older, the Loan Closet lends equipment at no charge, and Human Services assesses benefits and program eligibility. The Southwestern CT Agency on Aging operates the CT Home Care Program, an alternative to nursing home placement for eligible seniors, and runs Medicare Open Enrollment sessions at the Mather Center.

Family at a distance

Arranging care for a parent in Darien from somewhere else

Many families arranging care from a distance manage a parent's care by phone. A few things make that workable. Start with a call, and let the nurse's first visit at home set the plan with you listening in. Ask your Care Manager how you will be updated, and tell us how you'd like to hear from us.

Decide who the town contact is. Human Services, which is also the Municipal Agent for the elderly, is the local contact for older adults, and the Southwestern CT Agency on Aging's Aging Answers line can point you to services. Ask your parent to join the Emergency Call List and Alerts 06820, and add your number to the alerts.

When there is a hospital stay, ask the case manager to include you in the discharge call. A caregiver who knows the routine can be there on the day, and your Care Manager keeps the family updated.

Questions Darien families ask

Does Endurance provide home care in Darien?

Yes. We arrange care at home for families in Darien from our office at 60 Long Ridge Rd in Stamford, the next town over. Care can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock, and your Care Manager keeps the family updated, including relatives who live out of town.

Can a caregiver take my mother to appointments?

Yes. A caregiver can drive her to appointments, stay with her and bring her home, and help with errands along the way. Tell us what the week looks like and we'll build it into the schedule. One family wrote that caregivers "go above and beyond" and are "helping coordinate all of her doctors appointments which really takes a lot off my family's plate."

Can we use long-term care insurance?

Families with a long-term care insurance policy can use it, and we'll help with the paperwork. Endurance is private pay, and the cost depends on the schedule and the help needed, so we'll talk it through with you. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. Bring the policy to the consultation: we read it with you, sentence by sentence, and tell you what it covers and what it doesn't. One family wrote: 'When I met with Tom and Chris, we discussed our LTC policy and my stress level was very much reduced.'

We can't always be there. How will we know how things are going?

Your Care Manager keeps you updated and is the person to call when something changes. If you live out of town or work long hours, tell us how you'd like to hear from us and we'll plan around it.

How soon can care begin?

Tell us where care is needed, when you'd like it to start and what help you're looking for. We'll check the arrangements and explain the next steps, from the nurse visit to meeting the caregiver.

Do you offer live-in care in Darien?

Yes. A live-in caregiver lives in the home with agreed working time and a proper night's rest, which suits a parent who needs someone present but not awake every hour. If your parent needs someone awake through the night, 24-hour care uses awake shifts instead. We will talk through which fits the nights you are really having.

What happens when my parent comes home from Stamford or Norwalk Hospital?

Tell the case manager or discharge planner early that you want home care arranged. Each hospital says its care managers help plan the move home. We plan the first 72 hours with you, including the ride, meals and the first night. Skilled nursing and therapy at home come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company that provides them in Connecticut only.

How do At Home in Darien rides work, and where does a caregiver fit?

Residents 60 and older, and disabled residents 18 and older, get door-to-door rides to Darien, Stamford, Norwalk and New Canaan, Monday to Thursday, 9 AM to 4 PM and Friday, 9 AM to 1 PM. You call with the day, time and destination. Riders who cannot get in and out alone or run their own wheelchair need an aide or caregiver along, and a caregiver can be that person.
