  • A parent is coming home from Norwalk Hospital or St. Vincent's

    Both hospitals describe discharge planning you can start early, and St. Vincent's says it does not provide discharge transportation and aims to discharge patients before 11:00 AM. That puts the ride home, the first meal and the first night on the family. Tell us the discharge date and we'll plan the help around it.

  • A spouse has stopped driving

    Wheels2U Westport runs on demand to the Senior Center, the Farmers' Market and the library on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and door-to-door rides within town are booked a day ahead once a rider is certified. Mondays, Fridays, evenings and weekends are where a caregiver who drives and stays alongside fills in.

  • A parent wants to keep going to the Senior Center

    The Westport Center for Senior Activities serves lunch at Sue's Cafe on weekdays, runs classes and groups, and has a Human Services social worker on site Tuesdays and Thursdays. Westport is one town, and mail uses ZIP code 06880. USPS does not accept Saugatuck as a mailing city, so an address in Saugatuck still reads Westport, CT 06880. Our office is at 60 Long Ridge Road, Suite 214, Stamford, and the registered nurse comes to your parent's home for the first visit wherever in town it is.

  • Downtown and Saugatuck, 06880

    The Library at 20 Jesup Road, Levitt Pavilion at 40 Jesup Road, the Playhouse at 25 Powers Court and the Westport Museum at 25 Avery Place are all within a couple of minutes of Town Hall. A companion can combine several of these in one trip. Wheels2U also runs to the Saugatuck train station.

    USPS lists 06838 for Greens Farms as a PO box ZIP. Street addresses in the Greens Farms section of Westport use Westport, CT 06880 in town documents, which we inferred from those documents, so confirm the address you have. Wheels2U also serves the Greens Farms train station.

    Compo Beach is at 60 Compo Beach Road, about 8 minutes by car from Town Hall, and Longshore Club Park is at 260 Compo Road South. There is no separate ZIP code for Compo. A caregiver who drives is the practical way to get a parent to the water.

Coming home

Transitional care: coming home from the hospital or a rehab stay

The hospitals in our research with their own discharge guidance are Northwell Norwalk Hospital, St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport and Bridgeport Hospital. Norwalk is about 11 minutes by car from Town Hall, St. Vincent's about 19 and Bridgeport Hospital about 23, all routing estimates. Norwalk Hospital is now part of Northwell Health, and older pages still use the Nuvance name.

Each hospital describes a discharge process you can start early. Ask the case manager for the likely discharge date as soon as you can, and tell them you want home care arranged.

  • Northwell Norwalk Hospital

    When it is time to go home, case managers coordinate with your care team, and the discharge planner gives you information on local resources such as transportation, equipment, home care and respite care. The Goldstone Caregiver Center in the main pavilion is open to any caregiver, wherever the patient is treated.

  • St. Vincent's Medical Center

    The discharge page lists help arranging skilled nursing or rehabilitation placement, home nursing and equipment delivery. The hospital does not provide discharge transportation, and its goal is to discharge patients before 11:00 AM, so line up the ride and someone to be at home that morning.

  • Bridgeport Hospital

    Social workers and nurse case managers are available 7 days a week, and the hospital says planning for recovery should begin early in the stay. Discharge plans may include home healthcare, outpatient or short-term rehabilitation, sub-acute care and skilled nursing placement.

  • Before the discharge date

    Ask whether a short rehab stay is part of the plan. Arrange the ride home, and a person to be at the house when your parent arrives. Line up meals: Westport's Home Delivered Meals serve residents who cannot prepare their own. Ask the discharge planner what equipment and follow-up appointments to expect.

  • The first night and the first week

    The first night can be the hardest. Endurance Homebound is our plan for the first 72 hours after a hospital stay. A caregiver can be there when your parent arrives, set up the room, make the first meal and stay through the night, then drive to follow-up appointments and tell the family how the days went. Tell us the discharge date and we'll plan the help around it.

Choosing a setting

Home care, assisted living, nursing and rehab, and adult day

These settings do different jobs, and a family sometimes uses more than one. Home care brings help into your parent's own house, at the hours you choose. Assisted living is a residence where staff provide personal care and monitoring through the day. Memory care is a residence built around memory support. Skilled nursing and rehab is a medical setting for recovery or long-term nursing needs. Independent living is housing, sometimes with services. Adult day is a program your parent attends for the day and then returns home.

In Westport, the Residence at Westport, at 1141 Post Road East, is the assisted living community, and we list it as assisted living only. The building at 1 Burr Road, formerly Westport Health Care Center, is not listed: the town approved converting the skilled nursing facility to memory care, and we could not confirm that either is operating today. The nearest skilled nursing is in Southport, Fairfield, Norwalk, Wilton and New Canaan.

The adult day options we verified are outside Westport. ElderHouse in Norwalk lists Westport among the towns it serves, and Mozaic Senior Life (the new name of Grasmere by the Sea) has adult day programs in Bridgeport and Stratford.

Endurance can work alongside a community. In Connecticut we provide companion care and personal care inside assisted living and other communities, and a caregiver your parent already knows can come with them. Skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company that provides them in Connecticut only.

The town's own network

What Westport already offers, and the hours between

Westport runs a real network for older residents, and a plan that uses it well is more likely to last. None of these programs is affiliated with Endurance Home Care. If your mother likes to get out, the Westport Center for Senior Activities runs programs for adults 60 and older, and a caregiver can take her there.

The Center is at 21 Imperial Avenue, in Baron's Park South, and is a division of the Department of Human Services. It is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Human Services also runs Hello, Neighbor and the READY Registry, and the Westport Transit District arranges the rides.

Hours are the catch. Wheels2U goes to the Senior Center only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Sue's Cafe serves one lunch, 12:00 to 1:00 PM. A caregiver fills the evenings, nights, weekends and the days the programs are closed, and takes your parent to the ones that are open.

  • The Senior Center

    Open to everyone 60 and older from Westport and neighboring towns, with Sue's Cafe for lunch. Registration is available by phone on weekdays. A Human Services social worker is on site Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the department makes home appointments for medically homebound residents.

  • Lunch

    Sue's Cafe serves lunch Monday to Friday, 12:00 to 1:00 PM. The center recommends registering at least 48 hours ahead, and the cheese omelet or chef salad option must be chosen then if your parent wants it. Guests and caregivers under 60 are charged the full meal price per the center, so ask when you register.

  • Meals at home

    Home Delivered Meals are for any Westport resident whose age, illness or disability keeps them from preparing their own meals. The program is sponsored by Catholic Charities of Fairfield County. A caregiver can be home when the meal arrives and cook on the other days.

  • Rides

    Wheels2U Westport is an app-based, curb-to-curb shuttle. Door-to-door service within town is for residents 65 and older, or younger residents with a disability, for eligible riders, booked a day in advance. Town-to-town trips to Norwalk, Wilton, Weston, New Canaan, Darien, Stamford and Greenwich are for qualified ADA residents.

  • Library at home

    The Library's Homebound Delivery brings books, DVDs, CDs and audiobooks weekly to residents who are homebound, lack dependable transportation or are temporarily incapacitated.

  • Safety and company

    Hello, Neighbor offers friendly phone calls and volunteer grocery help for Westport residents. The READY Registry is for residents who need special help in weather emergencies, and the 2024 directory says only residents with the highest need will qualify, so ask Human Services.

  • Caregiver support

    The Senior Center lists a Caregivers Support Group and a Bereavement Support Group in its newsletters, and the Goldstone Caregiver Center at Norwalk Hospital is open to any caregiver. The Alzheimer's Association's Connecticut chapter lists groups and education.

Putting it together

How a week can fit together

This is an illustration, not a schedule anyone has to follow. Check each program's current hours, and expect the shape to change as your parent's needs change. It uses the published hours of the programs above.

  • Tuesday to Thursday

    Wheels2U runs to the Senior Center, the Farmers' Market and the library between 9 AM and 3 PM. A caregiver can book the ride, go along and bring your parent home. The Human Services social worker is at the Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which makes those days good for questions about benefits.

  • Weekday lunch

    Sue's Cafe serves from 12:00 to 1:00 PM and recommends registering 48 hours ahead. On days your parent stays home, Home Delivered Meals are brought by volunteers, and a caregiver can sit down to the meal with them.

  • Thursdays in season

    The Farmers' Market runs 10 AM to 2 PM next to the Senior Center through November 5, 2026. The Westport Museum is open Thursday through Saturday, 11 AM to 5 PM.

  • Mondays and Fridays

    Wheels2U does not run to the Senior Center on these days, though the Center is open. Door-to-door rides within town are booked a day ahead, or a caregiver drives.

  • Evenings, nights and weekends

    The programs above leave these open. Overnight, live-in or 24-hour care covers them, and so does family. Many families choose who is on and when, and write it down.

Beyond appointments

Places to go with an older parent

A good outing is short, close to parking and has somewhere to sit. In Westport the library is wheelchair accessible and Wheels2U stops at Jesup Green. Compo Beach has Mobi Mats and accessible picnic pads, and outside the May 1 to September 30 fee season entrance to the town beaches is free. The Playhouse, Levitt Pavilion and MoCA CT are the town's arts.

Resident rules matter in summer. Town beaches need a parking emblem from May 1 to September 30, and the town has a resident category for a senior (62 and older) or handicapped person, plus senior handpasses at Longshore. Fees change each year, so read the town page for amounts.

A companion caregiver can drive, find parking, carry the folding chair, keep the pace your parent likes and pick the quiet hour. Our things-to-do page has the full list with practical notes.

Choosing help

Choosing a home care agency in Westport

If you are comparing home care agencies in Westport, or searching for private home care agencies near you, a few checks tell you most of what you need. In Connecticut, an agency that provides companion or homemaker services has to be registered with the Department of Consumer Protection before it operates. The state publishes the rules in Connecticut General Statutes sections 20-670 to 20-682.

Endurance Home Care is a Connecticut Homemaker-Companion Agency, registration HCA.0002450, with our office at 60 Long Ridge Road, Suite 214, Stamford, CT 06902. Registration is not a state endorsement of quality, and the statute says so. You can verify any agency's registration at CT eLicense.

Home health care agencies licensed by the Department of Public Health are a different category: they provide nursing. Our skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company that provides them in Connecticut only.

  • Is it an agency or a registry?

    An agency places its own employees. A registry matches independent caregivers, and the family may be treated as the employer, with tax and workers' compensation duties. Connecticut requires registries to give the family a signed notice about this.

  • What does the written plan say?

    Connecticut requires a written contract or service plan within 7 days of starting service, 60 days' written notice for rate changes for the same level or type of services, and lets a client cancel a contract with no fixed duration. Ask to see the plan before you sign.

  • How are caregivers screened?

    State law requires a full background check, including the sex offender registry and a nationwide criminal check, before hire. Ask about references and training too. Endurance checks references, verifies qualifications, and runs orientation before a caregiver's first shift.

  • Who do you call?

    At Endurance, a registered nurse visits at home and writes the care plan with your family, and a Care Manager keeps you updated and adjusts the plan as needs change. Ask any agency who that person is.

  • Can you look up the number?

    Endurance is licensed by the state, and you can look the number up. Our registration is HCA.0002450, and CT eLicense will show it.

  • Will you meet the caregiver first?

    We choose a caregiver with your parent's routines and preferences in mind and introduce them before the first visit. Most of our caregivers are CNAs. If it is not working, we find someone else.

  • How will the plan change?

    A plan that fits now may not fit next season. Ask how often the plan is reviewed and how the agency hears about a change in your parent's health or preferences. At Endurance, plans are reviewed as needs change, and your Care Manager keeps you updated, wherever you live.

Paying for care

What sets the cost of care, and how families pay

Cost depends on the hours, the schedule and the kind of help. An hour of companion care, a block of overnight hours, a live-in arrangement and awake 24-hour shifts are priced differently, and personal care adds hands-on help. We do not publish prices. We talk through your parent's week first and then explain how it would be priced.

Endurance Home Care is private pay and does not accept insurance directly. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. Its home health benefit covers part-time skilled care for people who are homebound, and Medicare does not cover 24-hour care, or custodial care when it is the only care needed. Long-term care insurance can cover personal and custodial care at home, usually as a daily amount up to a limit. If your parent has a policy, we help with the paperwork. Veterans may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, an add-on to a VA pension.

Westport has local help with costs too. Human Services offers application assistance, including energy assistance. The regional Agency on Aging administers the CT Home Care Program for Elders, which has asset restrictions.

Family at a distance

Arranging care for a parent in Westport from somewhere else

Many of the people who call us live in the city or farther away and are managing a parent's care by phone. A few things make that workable. Start with a call, and let the nurse's first visit at home set the plan with you listening in. Ask your Care Manager how you will be updated. Decide who the town contact is.

That contact can be Human Services in Town Hall, which has a Municipal Agent for the Elderly and makes home appointments for qualifying homebound residents. Ask your parent about Hello, Neighbor for friendly calls and the READY Registry for weather emergencies.

When there is a hospital stay, ask the case manager to include you in the discharge call. If it is St. Vincent's, arrange the ride home ahead of time. A caregiver who knows the routine can be there on the day, and your Care Manager keeps the family updated.

One floating beach wheelchair is available and must be accompanied by an able-bodied adult. A daily parking fee applies May 1 through September 30, with daily passes limited to 125 a day. Do you provide home care in Westport, CT?

Yes. We arrange care at home for families in Westport from our office at 60 Long Ridge Road in Stamford. Care can be hourly, overnight, live-in or 24-hour with awake shifts, as companion care or personal care. A registered nurse visits your home first and writes the care plan with your family, and your Care Manager keeps you updated.

Can a caregiver drive my father to appointments and errands?

Yes. A caregiver can drive him to appointments, stay with him and bring him home, and pick up groceries or prescriptions along the way. Tell us what the week looks like and we'll build the rides into the schedule.

Can we start with a few hours and add more later?

Yes. Many families start with help on the hardest mornings or afternoons, then add hours, nights or live-in care as needs change. Your Care Manager adjusts the plan with you, so nothing has to start over.

How do families pay for home care?

Endurance is private pay. The cost depends on the hours and the kind of help, so we'll go through it with you once we know what the week looks like. If there's a long-term care insurance policy, we'll help with the paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.

How soon can care begin?

Tell us where care is needed, when you'd like it to start and what help you're looking for. We'll check the arrangements, set up the nurse visit and explain the next steps, including when you'll meet the caregiver.

Is home care cheaper than assisted living in Connecticut?

Often, yes. Per Long Term Care Navigator 2026 Connecticut tables, assisted living runs a median $9,118 per month and a semi-private nursing room $15,208, while in-home care at 40 hours a week runs roughly $6,864 per month at the state's $37 to $42 hourly range. One Endurance client: 'I had planned on putting mom in an assisted living facility' and found 'the most cost effective choice was to keep her at home.'

Do you offer live-in care in Westport?

Yes. A live-in caregiver lives in the home with agreed working time and a proper night's rest, which suits a parent who needs someone present but not awake every hour. If your parent needs someone awake through the night, 24-hour care uses awake shifts instead. We will talk through which fits the nights you are really having.

What happens when my parent comes home from Norwalk Hospital or St. Vincent's?

Tell the case manager or discharge planner early that you want home care arranged. St. Vincent's does not provide discharge transportation and aims to discharge patients before 11:00 AM, so plan the ride and someone at home that morning. We plan the first 72 hours with you, including the ride, meals and the first night.

How do Wheels2U and the door-to-door rides work, and where does a caregiver fit in?

Wheels2U Westport is an app-based shuttle that goes to the Senior Center, Farmers' Market and library Tuesday to Thursday. Door-to-door rides are for residents 65 and older or with a disability, for eligible riders, booked a day ahead. A caregiver covers Mondays, Fridays, evenings, weekends and trips outside those limits.

Can a caregiver take my parent to the Westport Center for Senior Activities?

Yes. The Center, at 21 Imperial Avenue, is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM to everyone 60 and older, and serves lunch at Sue's Cafe from 12:00 to 1:00 PM, and the center recommends registering 48 hours ahead. A companion caregiver can take your parent, stay nearby and bring them home.

Is there a nursing home in Westport?

We could not verify an operating nursing home in Westport. The 1 Burr Road building, formerly Westport Health Care Center, was approved for conversion to memory care, and we could not confirm it is operating. The nearest skilled nursing is in Southport, Fairfield, Norwalk, Wilton and New Canaan. Our senior living page lists them.

How is home care different from assisted living in Westport?

Home care keeps your parent in their own house with help at the hours you choose. Assisted living is a residence where staff provide personal care and monitoring through the day, and the Residence at Westport on Post Road East is the one in town. Some families combine them, with companion visits inside a community. Neither route is the right one for everyone.

How do I choose a home care agency in Westport?

Confirm the agency is registered with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, which you can check at CT eLicense. Ask whether caregivers are its employees, how background checks are done, what the written service plan says and who you call when something changes. Our Connecticut registration is HCA.0002450.

Are you a private home care agency?

Yes. Endurance Home Care is a private pay agency and does not accept insurance directly. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home, so families pay privately, and if there is a long-term care insurance policy we help with the paperwork. We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the hours and the help.

Can you arrange care for a parent in Westport if I live out of town?

Yes. A registered nurse visits your parent at home and writes the plan with you by phone, and your Care Manager keeps you updated as it changes. Westport's Human Services department is the local contact for older adults and caregivers, and your parent can join Hello, Neighbor for friendly calls.
