Most towns argue with the decision. This one organized around it. There is a membership organization for older residents who intend to stay in their houses, a volunteer ride service older than most of the families using it, a community center inside a park, and a library that still gives somebody a reason to be downtown on a weekday.    A membership organization that helps older residents live confidently at home through practical services and social connections. It is the reason so many households here start the conversation already committed to staying.

3. GetAbout

   Running since 1980, GetAbout provides roughly 10,000 rides a year and delivers 4,000 Meals on Wheels meals. For many families it covers the daytime trip to an appointment and stops short of the evening.

4. New Canaan Library

   151 Main Street. Programs, large print, and a reason to leave the house on a Tuesday, which is worth more than it sounds when a week has quietly emptied out.

Read the list as a map of daylight. Rides, programs, and meals cluster in the middle of the day on the middle of the week. Paid care is what covers the edges of it.

What families report first

It is almost never the task list. Families describe the person who turned up, and whether the house felt like itself with somebody else standing in the kitchen.
