    The hospitals on New Canaan's own facilities list are in Norwalk, Stamford and Greenwich, and a short rehab stay at Waveny Care Center is another route home. The day of discharge, the first night and the first week are when a plan matters most. We plan those days with you and cover the hours at home.

  • A spouse has stopped driving

    GetAbout rides are free and run Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM, and rides for errands and activities stay in New Canaan. That covers many weekday errands. Evenings, weekends and trips beyond those limits are where a caregiver who drives and stays alongside fills in.

  • One of you is at Waveny Care Center and the other is home alone

    GetAbout notes that its in-town rides are often used to visit a spouse at Waveny Care Center. The visit is one part of the day. Meals, medication reminders, company in the evening and getting through the night are the rest, and companion hours can cover them so the spouse at home is not carrying it alone.

  • A parent wants to keep going to Lapham

    Lapham Community Center runs classes, groups and screenings for adult residents, and it closes when New Canaan schools close for weather. A companion caregiver can take your parent to a class, stay nearby, and be at home with them on the days the center is closed.

  • Memory is changing: dementia and Alzheimer's care at home

    Waveny's Navigator program gives New Canaan caregivers free support, and its adult day program runs Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Home care can cover the mornings before, the hours after and the nights, so the day program fits into a week that holds together.

  • You live in the city or farther away

    You cannot stop by on a Tuesday. A registered nurse visits your parent at home and writes the plan with you, and your Care Manager keeps you posted. Human Services is the town's local contact for older adults and caregivers, and we can work with it.

In-home senior care across New Canaan's villages

New Canaan is a single town with a few distinct centers, and the addresses we checked all use ZIP code 06840. Our office is at 60 Long Ridge Road in Stamford, the next town over, and the registered nurse comes to your parent's home for the first visit wherever in town it is.

Silvermine reaches into Norwalk and Wilton as well, and those parts use other ZIP codes. If your parent lives on the Norwalk or Wilton side of Silvermine, mention it when you call so we plan the visit from the right address.

  • Downtown village, 06840

    Main Street, Elm Street and Oenoke Ridge, with Town Hall at 77 Main Street, the Library at 151 Main Street and the Elm Street shops and restaurants. For a parent who lives close in, a companion can walk to the library or a coffee instead of driving.

  • Silvermine, New Canaan side, 06840

    Home to Silvermine Arts Center at 1037 Silvermine Road, about 6 minutes by car from Town Hall. A caregiver who drives is the practical piece for getting there.

  • Talmadge Hill, 06840

    The southern section of town around the Talmadge Hill commuter lot and train station. Medical rides matter here as much as anywhere: GetAbout's medical rides include Stamford, Darien, Norwalk and Wilton.

  • Around Waveny Park and South Avenue

    Lapham Community Center and Waveny House are in Waveny Park at 677 South Avenue, and the Waveny campus is at 3 Farm Road. The YMCA is at 564 South Avenue. Lapham, Waveny House, Parks and Recreation and the Waveny campus are all in this part of town.

Coming home

Transitional care: coming home from the hospital or a rehab stay

New Canaan's own health care facilities page lists Norwalk Hospital, Stamford Hospital and Greenwich Hospital. Norwalk Hospital is now part of Northwell Health (Northwell Norwalk Hospital), and the town's page still links to its old address. The nearest is about 10 minutes by car from Town Hall, Stamford about 21 and Greenwich about 26. These are routing estimates.

Each hospital describes a discharge process you can start early. Ask the case manager for the likely discharge date as soon as you can, and tell them you want home care arranged.

  • Northwell Norwalk Hospital

    Case managers coordinate home health services, medical equipment, rehabilitation, skilled nursing, long-term care and hospice after discharge, and the discharge planner gives families information on local resources. The Goldstone Caregiver Center offers caregiver support, Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 4:30 PM.

  • Stamford Hospital

    Care managers and social workers help with discharge planning and can give you information on non-covered services such as private duty aides and transportation. The care management office is open Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.

  • Greenwich Hospital

    Planning for discharge begins on the day of admission, with nurse case managers working with the patient and caregiver. The needs it assesses include transportation on the day of discharge, Meals on Wheels, homemaker and companion services, home care, and rehabilitation or skilled nursing placement.

  • Silver Hill Hospital

    Silver Hill in New Canaan treats mental health and substance use disorders. It is not a general hospital with an emergency department. Its Assessment Program, by appointment and not an emergency service, is free for residents of New Canaan, Westport and Weston.

  • Before the discharge date

    Ask whether a short rehab stay is planned, for example at Waveny Care Center. Arrange the ride home, because discharge day is when a family needs a driver who can stay. Line up meals: Meals on Wheels of New Canaan delivers Monday to Friday. Ask the discharge planner what equipment and follow-up appointments to expect.

  • The first night and the first week

    The first night can be the hardest. A caregiver can be there when your parent arrives, set up the room, make the first meal and stay through the night. Over the first week a caregiver can drive to follow-up appointments, remind your parent of medications on the schedule the doctor set, and tell the family how the days went.

Choosing a setting

Home care, assisted living, memory care, nursing and rehab, and adult day

These settings do different jobs, and a family sometimes uses more than one. Home care brings help into your parent's own house, at the hours you choose. Assisted living is a residence where staff provide personal care and monitoring through the day. Memory care is a residence built around memory support. Skilled nursing and rehab is a medical setting for recovery or long-term nursing needs. Independent living is housing with meals and services. Adult day is a program your parent attends for the day and then returns home.

In New Canaan most of the options sit on one campus. Waveny, a non-profit senior care campus at 3 Farm Road, has The Inn at Waveny for independent living, The Village at Waveny for assisted living and memory care, the Care Center for skilled nursing and rehab, and the Navigator Adult Day Program. Waveny broke ground on May 27, 2026 on a new short-term rehabilitation building, and its site says construction is underway. The Care Center is operating now.

One name causes confusion. Brightview on New Canaan is at 162 New Canaan Avenue in Norwalk, not in the town of New Canaan. It offers assisted living and memory care, about 7 minutes by car from Town Hall.

Endurance can work alongside a community. In Connecticut we provide companion care and personal care inside assisted living and other communities, and a caregiver your parent already knows can come with them. Skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company that provides them in Connecticut only.

The town's own network

What New Canaan already offers, and the hours between

New Canaan runs its own network for older residents, and it is a good one to build on. None of these programs is affiliated with Endurance Home Care. We name them because a plan that uses them well is more likely to last.

The town's Senior Resources directory is the starting list. Lapham Community Center is the adult center in Waveny Park. GetAbout gives free rides. Staying Put in New Canaan is a membership organization for residents 60 and older. Meals on Wheels of New Canaan delivers weekday meals. Human Services offers benefit guidance and counseling, and the Vulnerable Resident Outreach Registry puts residents 65 and older, or homebound or disabled, on the list for wellness calls in a town-wide emergency.

Hours are the catch. GetAbout runs Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM. Lapham closes at 4:30 PM Monday to Thursday and 1:30 PM on Friday, and closes when the schools close for weather. Meals on Wheels delivers once a day. A caregiver fills the evenings, nights, weekends and snow days, and takes your parent to the programs that are open.

  • Rides

    GetAbout is free for residents 18 or older who cannot drive, with wheelchair-accessible vans. Medical rides go to Stamford, Darien, Norwalk and Wilton. Staying Put offers door-to-door transportation for members. A caregiver covers the trips and the hours these services do not.

  • Meals

    Meals on Wheels delivers one to five days a week, and the New Canaan Food Pantry distributes through Human Services. A caregiver can be home when the meal arrives, cook on the other days, and notice if meals are going uneaten.

  • The senior center

    Lapham offers continuing education, exercise and special events, plus free screenings, Medicare counseling and a monthly legal Q&A with an attorney, by appointment. Registration is open to New Canaan residents age 21 and older, and scholarships go through Human Services.

  • Aging in place

    Staying Put provides minor home repairs, technology help, groceries and errands, and a home safety assessment for residents 60 and older, with financial assistance available. Pair it with a caregiver for the daily hours.

  • Safety and records

    Sign your parent up for the Vulnerable Resident Outreach Registry and for New Canaan Alerts, and add a family number to the alerts. The Health Department runs free screenings with a public health nurse at Lapham on the first and third Wednesdays.

  • Caregiver support

    Lapham hosts a free weekly group for people caring for a spouse. Waveny's Navigator program supports caregivers of people with Alzheimer's or dementia. The town's Caregiver Support page lists more groups in the area.

Putting it together

How a week can fit together

This is an illustration, not a schedule anyone has to follow. Check each program's current hours, and expect the shape to change as your parent's needs change. It uses the published hours of the programs above.

  • Weekday mornings

    Meals on Wheels arrives on the days your parent signs up for. A caregiver can help with the morning routine, be there when the meal arrives and sit down to it with your parent. GetAbout rides can start at 9 AM.

  • Midday

    A class or group at Lapham, a free screening on the first or third Wednesday, or a weekly Sit & Knit at the YMCA on Wednesday at 1:30 PM. The caregiver can drive or book the ride, go along, and bring your parent home.

  • Afternoons

    A walk at Mead Memorial Park, an hour at the library, or an appointment. Medical rides go as far as Stamford, Darien, Norwalk and Wilton. For appointments, a caregiver can come inside, write down the instructions and tell the family.

  • Evenings, nights and weekends

    The regular hours of GetAbout, Lapham and Meals on Wheels leave these open. Overnight, live-in or 24-hour care covers them, and so does family. Many families choose who is on and when, and write it down.

  • Snow days and program closures

    Lapham closes when New Canaan schools close, and GetAbout has no service on its listed holidays. These are days to plan a caregiver for, so the routine does not lose a day.

Beyond appointments

Places to go with an older parent

A good outing is short, close to parking and has somewhere to sit. New Canaan has several that fit: the library, which has an elevator, hearing loops and free parking in the Center School Lot; the Museum & Historical Society's Town House, which has an elevator; and Grace Farms, which is free, fully ADA accessible and lends wheelchairs at the West Barn Welcome Center. Schedule a Grace Farms visit in advance.

For fresh air, Mead Memorial Park has a pond to walk around, and the Bristow Bird Sanctuary has an accessible parking spot at 47 Old Stamford Road. The pages we checked do not describe trail surfaces for Waveny Park, the Nature Center or the Land Trust trails, so try a short stretch first. The Glass House is by guided tour only, with tickets and a shuttle from the Visitor Center. A minimal-walking tour exists.

A companion caregiver can drive, carry the folding chair, keep the pace your parent likes and pick the quiet hour. Our things-to-do page has the full list with practical notes.

Choosing help

Choosing a home care agency in New Canaan

If you are comparing home care agencies in New Canaan, or searching for private home care agencies near you, a few checks tell you most of what you need. In Connecticut, an agency that provides companion or homemaker services has to be registered with the Department of Consumer Protection before it operates. The state publishes the rules in Connecticut General Statutes sections 20-670 to 20-682.

Endurance Home Care is a Connecticut Homemaker-Companion Agency, registration HCA.0002450, with our office at 60 Long Ridge Road, Suite 214, Stamford, CT 06902. Registration is not a state endorsement of quality, and the statute says so. You can verify any agency's registration at CT eLicense.

Home health care agencies licensed by the Department of Public Health are a different category: they provide nursing. Our skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company that provides them in Connecticut only.

  • Is it an agency or a registry?

    An agency places its own employees. A registry matches independent caregivers, and the family may be treated as the employer, with tax and workers' compensation duties. Connecticut requires registries to give the family a signed notice about this.

  • What does the written plan say?

    Connecticut requires a written contract or service plan within 7 days of starting service, 60 days' written notice for rate changes for the same level or type of services, and lets a client cancel a contract with no fixed duration. Ask to see the plan before you sign.

  • How are caregivers screened?

    State law requires a full background check, including the sex offender registry and a nationwide criminal check, before hire. Ask about references and training too. Endurance checks references, verifies qualifications, and runs orientation before a caregiver's first shift.

  • Who do you call?

    At Endurance, a registered nurse visits at home and writes the care plan with your family, and a Care Manager keeps you updated and adjusts the plan as needs change. Ask any agency who that person is.

  • Will you meet the caregiver first?

    We choose a caregiver with your parent's routines and preferences in mind and introduce them before the first visit. If it is not working, we find someone else.

  • Have you talked to more than one agency?

    Before you choose, write down your parent's conditions, where they need a hand and what they enjoy, then meet a few agencies in person or by video call. Ask each about caregiver qualifications, how far the care plan can flex, and what happens in an emergency. Neighbors and friends in New Canaan who have arranged care are worth asking too.

Paying for care

What sets the cost of care, and how families pay

Cost depends on the hours, the schedule and the kind of help. An hour of companion care, a block of overnight hours, a live-in arrangement and awake 24-hour shifts are priced differently, and personal care adds hands-on help. We do not publish prices. We talk through your parent's week first and then explain how it would be priced.

As a market reference, not our rate: the CareScout (Genworth) 2025 Cost of Care Survey puts the Connecticut median for an in-home caregiver at $36 an hour, and the national median at $35. Providers' prices can differ from the median.

Endurance Home Care is private pay and does not accept insurance directly. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. Its home health benefit covers part-time skilled care for people who are homebound, and Medicare does not cover 24-hour care, or custodial care when it is the only care needed. Long-term care insurance can cover personal and custodial care at home, usually as a daily amount up to a limit. If your parent has a policy, we help with the paperwork. Veterans may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, an add-on to a VA pension.

New Canaan has local help with costs too. GetAbout rides are free, Meals on Wheels provides meals without charge to people without resources, Staying Put has financial assistance, Lapham scholarships go through Human Services, and the Assessor's page covers Elderly Tax Relief for homeowners. The regional Agency on Aging notes limited scholarships for adult day centers.

Family at a distance

Arranging care for a parent in New Canaan from somewhere else

Many of the people who call us live in the city or farther away and are managing a parent's care by phone. A few things make that workable. Start with a call, and let the nurse's first visit at home set the plan with you listening in. Ask your Care Manager how you will be updated. Decide who the town contact is.

That contact can be Human Services, which the Southwestern CT Agency on Aging lists as New Canaan's Municipal Agent for older adults and caregivers. Ask your parent to enroll in the Vulnerable Resident Outreach Registry and in New Canaan Alerts, and add your number to the alerts.

When there is a hospital stay, ask the case manager to include you in the discharge call. A caregiver who knows the routine can be there on the day, and your Care Manager keeps the family updated.

    A 366-bed hospital with a Level II trauma center, now part of Northwell Health, and the closest of the three hospitals on the town's list (about 10 minutes by car from Town Hall, a routing estimate). Its case managers coordinate home health services, equipment, rehabilitation, skilled nursing, long-term care and hospice after discharge, and the discharge planner can give you information on local resources. The Goldstone Caregiver Center in the main pavilion offers caregiver support and counseling, Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 4:30 PM.

  • Acute hospitalStamford Hospital (Stamford Health)One Hospital Plaza, Stamford, CT 06902

    A 305-bed Level II trauma center whose Emergency Department has dedicated services for seniors through its Geriatric Emergency Medicine Initiative. Care managers and social workers help plan the move home, and can give you information on non-covered services such as private duty aides and transportation. The care management office is open Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM. About 21 minutes by car from Town Hall.

  • Acute hospitalGreenwich Hospital (Yale New Haven Health)5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, CT 06830

    On the town's health care facilities list. Greenwich Hospital says discharge planning begins on the day of admission and that nurse case managers work with the patient and the caregiver. The needs it assesses include transportation on the day of discharge, Meals on Wheels, homemaker and companion services, home care, and a rehabilitation or skilled nursing placement. About 26 minutes by car from Town Hall.

  • Mental health and substance use hospitalSilver Hill Hospital208 Valley Road, New Canaan, CT 06840

    A New Canaan hospital for mental health and substance use disorders, with inpatient, residential and outpatient care. It is not a general hospital with an emergency department. Its Assessment Program, a confidential assessment with a psychiatrist and a social worker, is free for residents of New Canaan, Westport and Weston, by appointment only, and is not an emergency service.

    A 76-bed skilled nursing facility on the Waveny campus for short-term and long-term care, with a secure unit for people with advanced memory impairment. The standard tour includes a three-quarter mile walk over gravel, paved paths and grass, and a minimal-walking tour exists. There is no parking at the Visitor Center; the site points to the municipal lot on Park Street.

Questions New Canaan families ask

Do you provide home care in New Canaan, CT?

Yes. We arrange care at home for families in New Canaan from our office at 60 Long Ridge Road in Stamford, the next town over. Care can be hourly, overnight, live-in or 24-hour with awake shifts, as companion care or personal care. A registered nurse visits your home first and writes the care plan with your family.

Can we start with a few hours a week and add more later?

Yes. Hourly care can be a few mornings a week or full days, and it's easy to add to. If the nights get harder, we can add overnight care or talk about live-in or 24-hour care, and your Care Manager updates the plan with you.

What if my mother needs help at night?

An awake overnight caregiver can be there for the night hours, for help to the bathroom or settling back to sleep. If she needs someone through the day as well, live-in care or 24-hour care with awake shifts may suit her better, and we'll talk through which one fits.

Will we meet the caregiver before care starts?

Yes. We choose a caregiver with the person's routines and preferences in mind and introduce them before the first visit. If it isn't working, tell us and we'll find someone else. Matching is done against temperament and habit, not availability, and the same caregiver is kept in place as the hours change. One family described the result simply: 'her amazing personality won him over.'

How do families pay for home care?

Home care with Endurance is private pay. The cost depends on the hours and the help needed, so we'll talk it through with you. If there's a long-term care insurance policy, we'll help with the paperwork.

Do you offer live-in care in New Canaan?

Yes. A live-in caregiver lives in the home with agreed working time and a proper night's rest, which suits a parent who needs someone present but not awake every hour. If your parent needs someone awake through the night, 24-hour care uses awake shifts instead. We will talk through which fits the nights you are really having.

What happens when my parent comes home from Norwalk, Stamford or Greenwich Hospital?

Tell the case manager or discharge planner early that you want home care arranged. Each hospital says its care managers help plan the move home, and Stamford's team also gives information on private duty aides and transportation. We plan the first 72 hours with you, including the ride home, meals and the first night.

How do GetAbout rides work, and where does a caregiver fit in?

GetAbout gives free rides to New Canaan residents 18 or older who cannot drive, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM. Rides for errands and activities stay in New Canaan, and medical rides also go to Stamford, Darien, Norwalk and Wilton. You book by phone. A caregiver covers evenings, weekends and trips outside those limits.

Can a caregiver take my parent to Lapham Community Center?

Yes. Lapham, in Waveny Park, serves New Canaan residents age 21 and older, and fall hours are Monday to Thursday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Friday, 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. A companion caregiver can take your parent to a class, stay nearby and bring them home. The center closes when New Canaan schools close for weather.

Is Brightview on New Canaan in New Canaan?

No. Brightview on New Canaan is at 162 New Canaan Avenue in Norwalk, about 7 minutes by car from Town Hall, and offers assisted living and memory care. Inside the town, The Village at Waveny, at 3 Farm Road, offers assisted living and memory care in one residence. Our senior living page compares the options.

How is home care different from assisted living or the Care Center at Waveny?

Home care keeps your parent in their own house with help at the hours you choose. Assisted living is a residence with staff providing personal care and monitoring through the day. Waveny Care Center is a skilled nursing and rehab setting. Some families combine them, with companion visits inside a community. Neither route is the right one for everyone.

How do I choose a home care agency in New Canaan?

Confirm the agency is registered with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, which you can check at CT eLicense. Ask whether caregivers are its employees, how background checks are done, what the written service plan says and who you call when something changes. Our Connecticut registration is HCA.0002450.

Are you a private home care agency?

Yes. Endurance Home Care is a private pay agency and does not accept insurance directly. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home, so families pay privately, and if there is a long-term care insurance policy we help with the paperwork. We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the hours and the help.

What does home care cost in New Canaan?

Cost depends on the hours, the schedule and the kind of help. As a market reference, the CareScout 2025 Cost of Care Survey puts Connecticut's median for an in-home caregiver at $36 an hour. That is a statewide median, not our rate. Call us and we will explain how your parent's week would be priced.

Can you arrange care for a parent in New Canaan if I live out of town?

Yes. A registered nurse visits your parent at home and writes the plan with you by phone, and your Care Manager keeps you updated as it changes. New Canaan's Human Services department is the local contact for older adults and caregivers, and your parent can enroll in the Vulnerable Resident Outreach Registry.
