What are good things to do in New Canaan with an older parent?

Start short and close to parking. The library has an elevator and hearing loops, Grace Farms is free and fully ADA accessible, and the Museum & Historical Society's Town House has an elevator. Mead Memorial Park has a pond to walk around, and Lapham Community Center runs classes and groups for adult residents. A caregiver can drive and set the pace.

Close to home

Easy outings close to home

The simplest outings are indoors, close to parking, with somewhere to sit. The New Canaan Library at 151 Main Street has free parking in the Center School Lot across from the Maple Street entrance, hearing loops in the Auditorium, an elevator and a large print collection. It runs an Aging Well Series and lectures.

The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society at 13 Oenoke Ridge Road is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM to 4 PM, or by appointment, and its Town House has an elevator connecting all three floors. It is walking distance from the New Canaan train station. Elm Street is nearby for a coffee afterward.

Downtown is also where the town holds the Holiday Stroll on the first Friday evening in December and the Village Fair in mid July.

The water and the parks

The water, the parks and the trails

Mead Memorial Park, at 241 Park Street, is a town park around a 4.75-acre pond, with the Bristow Bird Sanctuary next to it. Bristow's 17 acres of trails are open dawn to dusk, and the small lot at 47 Old Stamford Road has accessible parking. Waveny Park, at 677 South Avenue, covers 350 acres with trails, a pool and Waveny House. Kiwanis Park, at 77 Old Norwalk Road, has swimming, a playscape and trails.

The pages we checked do not state trail surfaces or slopes for Waveny Park, the Nature Center or the Land Trust's GreenLink trails, and they do not state resident or pass rules for swimming at Kiwanis or Waveny. Walk a short stretch first, and call Parks and Recreation, based at 677 South Avenue, before planning a swim.

On beaches: New Canaan's own parks pages list swimming at Kiwanis Park and a pool at Waveny Park, and say nothing about beach access or resident rules, so we have not written any. If a beach on Long Island Sound is the goal, check that town's parks office for its rules, and see our Darien, Norwalk and Westport pages.

Irwin Park appears in the Land Trust's trail names, as the GreenLink segment from Irwin Park to Nature Center. The Land Trust publishes trail maps, so read the trail page before you go.

Its Visitor Center is open Monday to Saturday, 9 AM to 4 PM, and adult programs include birding walks, local hikes and mahjong, with pre-registration.

Making it happen

How a companion caregiver makes outings happen

Many families have a place their parent would love to go and nobody with the time to take them. A companion caregiver can do the driving, find the parking, carry what is needed, and stay alongside for the pace your parent likes. The outing can be the whole point of the visit.

A few things help. Pick the time of day when your parent has the most energy. Call ahead about access, since the places above publish different details. Keep it short the first time. Bring a folding chair or a cane the parent already uses, and build in a place to sit.

If your parent does not drive, GetAbout gives free rides within New Canaan, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM, for errands and activities, and the caregiver can ride along. For evenings, weekends and anywhere GetAbout does not go, the caregiver drives.
