What are good things to do in Scarsdale with an older parent?

The Sunday farmers market on Spencer Place, the library and Harwood Park and Library Pond, the Nature Center at Greenburgh and the Weinberg Nature Center, and the Senior Club's classes and trips all work. Check hours and parking first. A companion can drive, walk at your parent's pace and stay alongside.

Easy outings close to home

The farmers market runs Sundays from May through November, 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM, at Spencer Place and Chase Road in downtown Scarsdale. The Village homepage still lists October 25 and November 1, 8 and 15 for 2026. Scarsdale Public Library at 54 Olmsted Road is open Monday to Wednesday 9 AM to 9 PM, Thursday and Friday 9 AM to 6 PM, Saturday 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunday 12 PM to 5 PM. Landscape construction is under way and parking may be limited, so allow a little extra time.

Harwood Park and Library Pond is one of 24 Village parks. The Village lists Greenacres Playground and Memorial Garden too. If your parent enjoys a quiet bench, ask the Village which of its parks has one close to parking.

The water and the parks

The Scarsdale Pool Complex is open May to September with membership required; it is ADA compliant, with a power lift into the main pool, and Senior Club members get free admission on Thursdays after 1:00 pm in summer.

The Nature Center at Greenburgh, 99 Dromore Road, is a preserve in the Edgemont area with free grounds open daily from dawn to dusk. Its five marked trails are all unpaved. Dogs aren't allowed. The Live Animal Museum is on the second floor with no elevator or accessible entrance, but the Welcome Center and main floor of the Manor House have accessible bathrooms. The Weinberg Nature Center, 455 Mamaroneck Road, has trails and a Trailside Museum; the Village gives no hours, so call before you go.

Saxon Woods Park in White Plains is a 700-acre county park, open 8 a.m. to dusk, with the county's only playground accessible to people with disabilities. You must show proof of Westchester residency. Trails Without Limits offers an all-terrain Trackchair by reservation, with limited availability. The Bronx River Pathway section between North Broadway and Fisher Lane is closed until further notice.

Culture and learning

The library's Museum Pass Program gives cardholders in good standing free entrance to participating museums, including the Bruce Museum and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Passes are borrowed for three days at the Reference Desk. The library's event calendar can be filtered by Seniors. The JCC Mid-Westchester's adult calendar lists book clubs, lectures and other adult programs.

Free Vital Aging workshops, run with the Recreation Department, cover nutrition, fall prevention, long-term planning and Medicare. The Town of Greenburgh's Gerard J. Byrne Center offers day trips such as Broadway shows and museum tours; ask the Town whether your address qualifies.

The senior center calendar

The Scarsdale Senior Club, at 244 Heathcote Road, is for residents 60 and older, with crafts classes, talks, film screenings, holiday celebrations, field trips and exercise in person or on Zoom. Members get a monthly e-newsletter and the Village page lists the October 2026 newsletter and calendar. Membership runs September 1 to August 31.

Edgemont residents should check the Greenburgh calendar instead: the Gerard J. Byrne Center in Ardsley is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the Theodore D. Young Community Center in White Plains runs bingo and a Friday cafe with live music.

How a companion caregiver makes outings happen

Most outings stall on the practical parts: someone to drive, a parking spot, the walk from the car, the bathroom, the wait. A companion handles those. They drive or ride along, drop you at the door, pace the walk to your parent, carry the bag, and stay alongside. They can also bring your parent home and see them settled.

Regular outings help too. A weekly companion visit that always includes the market or the library gives the week a shape. Tell us the places your parent likes and we will plan the hours around them.
