What senior living options are near Scarsdale?

Inside the Scarsdale postal area, the one we could verify is Sprain Brook Manor, a skilled nursing and rehab facility. Assisted living and memory care are just over the line: Sunrise of Scarsdale and The Bristal at White Plains, both with White Plains addresses, and Atria Woodlands in Ardsley. Endurance provides companion care in New York, at home or inside a community.

How to decide what kind of place or help fits

Start with the day, not the building. Where does help run out: meals, the evenings, getting to appointments, the nights, remembering things? If the answer is company, meals, errands and rides, care at home may be enough. If it is help with bathing, dressing or medication, or around-the-clock nursing, look at assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing, or ask your parent's doctor which kind of care applies.

Ask your parent what they want. Many people want to stay in the house; some want the company and routine of a community. Ask the doctor, a hospital case manager or NY Connects, the county's free information line, if you are unsure.

Edgemont is a point worth knowing: it has a Scarsdale mailing address but is part of unincorporated Greenburgh, so Greenburgh's senior services are the Town's to confirm.

Assisted living and independent living near Scarsdale

Sunrise of Scarsdale lists assisted living, memory care and short-term stays, on seven wooded acres bordering Saxon Woods Park. Its address is 9 Saxon Woods Road, White Plains. The Bristal at White Plains offers independent lifestyle, assisted living and memory care, about 11 minutes from Village Hall. Atria Woodlands in Ardsley lists independent living, supportive and independent living, and memory care, and says rent includes scheduled local transportation.

Each community sets its own fees and services. Ask what the monthly price covers, what costs extra, what happens when needs change, and how long a move between levels takes. We could not verify a life plan community near Scarsdale.

Memory care

Memory care is a separate neighborhood in a community for people living with memory loss. The Bristal at White Plains describes a private Reflections neighborhood; Sunrise of Scarsdale and Atria Woodlands also list memory care. Endurance does not provide memory care services in New York; if your parent moves to one of these communities, companion visits can add company, outings and familiar faces.

The Alzheimer's Association Hudson Valley Chapter holds a free caregiver support group on the third Thursday of each month, 4 to 5:30 p.m., at The Bristal at White Plains. Confirm the date first.

Skilled nursing and rehab

Sprain Brook Manor Rehab and Nursing is at 77 Jackson Avenue, Scarsdale. Its site lists long-term skilled nursing, short-term rehab, therapy, wound care and dedicated dementia units. The site is dated, so confirm it is operating and has space. Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, at 785 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains, is an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, not a Scarsdale address: admission starts with a doctor's referral and your case manager sends records to its Admissions Department.

If your parent is in a hospital, ask the case manager or social worker about rehab options before the day of departure. Endurance does not provide skilled nursing or rehabilitation. After rehab, companion care can be in place at home when your parent returns.

Adult day programs

Westchester County lists St. Andrew's Day Program in Hartsdale, about 8 minutes from Village Hall, as a social adult day program. It also lists medical adult day programs, such as Morningside in Hawthorne and ArchCare Senior Life (PACE) in Dobbs Ferry. The county pages do not give hours, fees or enrollment rules, so call each program.

Adult day fills part of the week. A companion can handle the other days and the ride, and keep the evening and weekend routine going.

How companion care works alongside or instead

At home, a companion provides company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides, accompaniment and reminders, by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. Inside a community, the same companion visits add one person who is there for your parent alone: a walk, a call, an outing, a ride to the appointment. Neither is better in itself. It depends on what your parent wants and what help they need.

Your Care Manager reviews the plan as needs change, so a family can start with a few hours and add more, or add companion visits after a move.

Questions to ask on a tour

Ask for the full fee schedule in writing, including what costs extra. Ask what happens when your parent's needs change and who decides. Ask how many staff are on at night and on weekends, and what a typical day looks like. Ask about outings and who provides rides, and whether your parent can bring a companion for company. Ask about the notice period if your parent wants to move out, and for a trial stay.

Visit at mealtime, ask to see a room like the one your parent would have, and bring your parent if you can.

Paying for each

Medicare says it does not pay for most long-term custodial care, so assisted living, memory care and long-term nursing home care are generally paid from private funds, long-term care insurance or Medicaid. Check your parent's policy. LongTermCare.gov says long-term care insurance policies can cover personal and custodial care at home or in a facility, and often require medical underwriting and have benefit limits.

Companion care from Endurance is private pay. If a long-term care insurance policy applies, we can help with the paperwork. Ask each community and each program about its own fees, and ask the hospital case manager what your parent's insurance covers for rehab.
