What senior living and care options are there in Greenwich, CT?

Greenwich has two state-licensed assisted living agencies: The Mews downtown and The Greens at Greenwich, a memory care community. The Nathaniel Witherell offers skilled nursing, rehab and a memory care unit, and River House in Cos Cob is the adult day program. Atria and Edgehill are in Stamford and Darien, not Greenwich. Care at home works alongside any of them.

How to decide what kind of place or help fits

Start with the day, not the building. What does a normal day look like now, where does it go wrong, and what does your parent want? If the trouble spots are mornings, meals and the evening, help at home may be enough. If the house is the problem, a residence may be. If the trouble is an acute event, such as a hospital stay, a rehab stay may come first.

Greenwich Hospital's case managers can tell you what the team recommends. The hospital says it assesses rehabilitation facility placement, skilled nursing placement, home care, and homemaker and companion services as part of discharge planning, so ask which one the team has in mind and why.

The Center for Healthy Aging at Greenwich Hospital offers an aging assessment, a 1.5 to 2 hour appointment with a board-certified geriatric physician. The town's Commission on Aging and Human Services can also talk through options.

Assisted living in Greenwich and next door

In Greenwich, the state's list of licensed Assisted Living Service Agencies includes The Mews (Merry-Go-Round Inc.) at 1/2 Bolling Place and The Greens at Greenwich at 1155 King Street, which provides memory care. The Mews is a non-profit community in downtown Greenwich built in 1970; it became the first licensed assisted living agency in town in 1997. Certified aides are on duty around the clock and a nurse is on duty from 8:00 to 4:30 and on call otherwise. It also offers short-term stays for recovery after a hospital stay or for caregiver respite.

Parsonage Cottage Senior Residence, at 88 Parsonage Road, is a residence with 34 single and 3 double rooms and help with bathing, grooming, dressing and medication management. It is not on the state's list of licensed assisted living agencies, so ask the Cottage how it is licensed and what care it can provide.

Edgehill, Atria Stamford and Brighton Gardens of Stamford are in Stamford, and Atria Darien is in Darien. For families searching for Atria in Greenwich, these are the nearest Atria communities we found. The state lists all four as active Assisted Living Service Agencies, and the nearest are about 10 to 18 minutes by car from Greenwich Hospital (routing estimates).

Memory care

The Greens at Greenwich is a privately owned memory care community on the Greenwich and Westchester border, accredited as a Purple Flag community by the Connecticut Assisted Living Association and the Alzheimer's Association. The Nathaniel Witherell has a separate Memory Care Unit with its own living and dining rooms and a higher staff to resident ratio. Edgehill and Brighton Gardens of Stamford offer memory care in Stamford, and so does Atria Stamford.

Memory care is not the only option when memory changes. River House Adult Day Center and Waveny's Navigator program in New Canaan offer daytime programs, and our memory support at home keeps routines steady in the house your parent knows. Greenwich Hospital also runs a free Family Caregiver Support Group for people caring for someone with Alzheimer's or another dementia.

Nursing homes and rehab

The Nathaniel Witherell, at 70 Parsonage Road, is a not-for-profit skilled nursing and short-term rehabilitation facility owned by the Town of Greenwich since 1903. Its short-term rehab has a 4,000 square foot gym and serves people recovering from surgery, illness or conditions such as stroke or heart failure, and it has a separate secured Memory Care Unit. About 8 minutes by car from Greenwich Hospital (a routing estimate).

Nearby in Stamford, federal Medicare data lists Stamford Care Center, The Villa at Stamford, Ark Healthcare & Rehabilitation at St. Camillus, Civita Care Center at Long Ridge and Edgehill Health Center as certified nursing homes. In Port Chester, New York, it lists The Enclave at Rye Rehab and Nursing Center and King Street Home. We did not review their own sites.

Ask the hospital case manager whether a rehab stay is part of the discharge plan before you arrange care at home, and ask the facility what is covered after a hospital stay.

Independent living and senior housing

Hill House, at 10 Riverside Avenue in Riverside, is a non-profit congregate home with 61 apartments for older adults of low to moderate income. Each apartment has an emergency call system and is handicapped accessible. The Mews also has independent living. Edgehill in Stamford offers independent living as part of a Lifecare campus with assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing on one campus.

Greenwich Library's Book Van delivers to senior residences in Greenwich every two weeks, so residents can keep reading without a trip to the library.

Adult day care

River House Adult Day Center, at 125 River Road Extension in Cos Cob, is a non-profit, medical model adult day center serving Greenwich and Stamford. It is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a registered nurse always on site, and it has a capacity of 60 members a day. Its own escorted, ADA accessible, door-to-door transportation within Greenwich and Stamford is available.

Waveny's Navigator Adult Day Program in New Canaan is a dementia-specific alternative about 22 minutes by car from Greenwich Hospital (a routing estimate).

How home care works alongside, or instead

Home care brings help to the house your parent knows. It can be a few hours a week, overnight, live-in or around the clock, as companion care or personal care. Some families choose it instead of a move. Others use it alongside one: in Connecticut, Endurance provides companion care and personal care inside assisted living and other communities, for company, mealtimes and the evenings.

It also helps at the edges. A caregiver can be at the house for the day of a move home from rehab, cover the hours around River House's van, or take a parent to The Mews for a short stay and bring them home. Skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate Connecticut company.

Questions to ask on a tour

Ask the same questions at every place so the answers can be compared. Write them down.

  • Licensing

How is the community licensed? The state publishes its list of Assisted Living Service Agencies; ask to see the license.

  • Care

Who is on duty at night? When is a nurse on site, and who is on call? What happens if my parent's needs change?

  • The day

Can I see a weekly activity calendar and a menu? How are meals and outings handled?

  • Fees

Ask for the fee schedule in writing, including what is extra and how often it changes.

  • Outside caregivers

Can a private caregiver add hours for company, mealtimes or the evenings, and how does the community want that arranged?

  • Emergencies

Which hospital would my parent be taken to? Who calls the family?

  • Moving in and out

What does a short stay involve? What happens if my parent needs to leave?

Paying for each

Home care with Endurance is private pay. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. Its home health benefit covers part-time or intermittent skilled care for people who are homebound, and it does not cover 24-hour care at home or custodial care when that is the only care needed. Long-term care insurance can help with personal and custodial care at home, and Veterans may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, an add-on to a VA pension.

For assisted living, memory care, a nursing home or rehab, ask each place for its fee schedule in writing and what is covered after a hospital stay, for how long and at what cost. Free, confidential Medicare counseling is available through the Greenwich Commission on Aging.

Questions families ask

Is there assisted living in Greenwich, CT?

Yes. The state's list shows two licensed assisted living agencies in Greenwich: The Mews, at 1/2 Bolling Place downtown, and The Greens at Greenwich, a memory care community at 1155 King Street. Parsonage Cottage, a senior residence at 88 Parsonage Road, is not on that list, so ask how it is licensed. Edgehill and Atria Stamford are in Stamford.

Is there an Atria in Greenwich?

No. Atria Stamford, at 77 3rd Street in Stamford, and Atria Darien, at 50 Ledge Road in Darien, are the nearest, and the state lists both as active assisted living agencies. Atria Stamford is about 14 minutes by car from Greenwich Hospital and Atria Darien about 16, as routing estimates.

Is there a nursing home in Greenwich?

Yes. The Nathaniel Witherell, at 70 Parsonage Road, is a not-for-profit skilled nursing and short-term rehabilitation facility owned by the Town of Greenwich since 1903, with a separate Memory Care Unit. In Stamford and Port Chester, New York, federal data lists more certified nursing homes. Ask any facility about visiting rules and bed availability.

Where can my parent do rehab near Greenwich?

The Nathaniel Witherell offers short-term rehabilitation in a 4,000 square foot gym, for recovery after surgery, illness, stroke or heart conditions, and outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy. Ask the Greenwich Hospital case manager whether a rehab stay is part of the discharge plan before you arrange care at home.

Where is memory care in Greenwich?

The Greens at Greenwich, at 1155 King Street, is a memory care community accredited as a Purple Flag community. The Nathaniel Witherell has a separate Memory Care Unit. Edgehill, Brighton Gardens of Stamford and Atria Stamford offer memory care in Stamford. At home, our memory support keeps routines steady.

Is there adult day care in Greenwich?

Yes. River House Adult Day Center in Cos Cob is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a registered nurse always on site and its own door-to-door transportation within Greenwich and Stamford. Waveny's Navigator program in New Canaan is a dementia-specific alternative.

Is there independent living or senior housing in Greenwich?

Yes. Hill House in Riverside has 61 apartments for older adults of low to moderate income, and The Mews has independent living. Edgehill in Stamford offers independent living on a Lifecare campus. Ask each about eligibility, and what help is part of living there.

Can home care be added while my parent lives in assisted living?

In Connecticut, yes. Endurance provides companion care and personal care inside assisted living and other communities, so a caregiver your parent knows can add hours for company, meals or the evenings. Ask the community how it works with outside caregivers, as policies differ.

What does Medicare pay for?

Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. Its home health benefit covers part-time or intermittent skilled care for people who are homebound, not 24-hour care at home, and not custodial care when that is the only care needed. Ask any facility what is covered after a hospital stay, for how long and at what cost.

How do I know whether home care or a community is right?

Start with what the day looks like and what your parent wants. Some people want to stay in their own house, and others want a place that handles meals and company. Many families combine them. Talk it through with our care team, or with the case manager at Greenwich Hospital.
