What senior living and care options are there near Short Hills, NJ?

We did not find an assisted living community, nursing home or adult day program listed inside Short Hills. The options are in neighboring towns: assisted living and memory care in Summit, Livingston and Mountainside, a life plan community in Maplewood, 11 skilled nursing and rehab facilities in nearby towns, and an adult day program in Summit. Care at home works alongside any of them.

Start here

How to decide what kind of help fits

Start with what is hardest and leave the name of a setting for later. If the hard part is mornings, meals and being alone, care at home may cover it. If it is the nights, an awake caregiver may help. If your parent needs nursing care and therapy after a hospital stay, a short stay at a rehab facility may come first. If memory is changing, the question is what kind of day is calmest for your parent.

Three things tend to settle it. Where does your parent want to live? What help is needed in a day and at night? What can your family and your parent's money sustain? SAGE Eldercare in Summit offers free counsel from a licensed social worker, including guidance and referrals for assisted senior living, by appointment in person, by phone, by email or virtually. Jewish Family Service of MetroWest offers a free telephone Care Consultation for family caregivers.

Nothing here requires a decision this week. You can begin with care at home, add an adult day program and tour communities later, or move to a community and add companion hours for a spouse who stays behind.

The options

Each option, with what is near Short Hills

Assisted living is an apartment in a community, with meals and help with daily routines. Near Short Hills, Sunrise of Summit is in downtown Summit, Sunrise of Livingston is on South Orange Avenue, CareOne at Livingston Assisted Living is on Passaic Ave., and Brighton Gardens of Mountainside is on Route 22 West.

Memory care is a setting designed for people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Sunrise of Summit, Sunrise of Livingston and Brighton Gardens of Mountainside list it, and CareOne's Harmony Village in Livingston lists 24/7 nursing care, a Dementia Specialist and Dementia-Certified staff onsite.

Skilled nursing and rehab is where a person goes for nursing care and therapy, often after the hospital. Atlantic Health publishes a list of 11 skilled nursing facilities near its hospitals, in Livingston, Maplewood, Chatham, Mountainside, Vauxhall, Florham Park, New Providence, Westfield and Berkeley Heights. None is in Millburn or Short Hills. Atlantic Health says you can choose the facility you want as long as it can care for you and has a bed open.

Independent living and life plan communities suit someone who wants to simplify but needs little help. Winchester Gardens in Maplewood lists independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehabilitation on one campus, and Crane's Mill in West Caldwell is a continuing care retirement community.

Adult day is a program that fills the daytime hours. SAGE Eldercare's Spend-A-Day in Summit is a licensed medical adult day program with meals, nursing support and on-site therapists. The state's Alzheimer's adult day subsidy lists SAGE as the nearest center, and participants may attend a center outside their home county.

Home care and communities

How care at home works alongside or instead

Care at home can stand on its own. Caregivers come to your parent's house by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock, a nurse visits first and writes the plan with you, and a Care Manager keeps you posted. For many families that is the setting they want, and it adapts as needs change.

It can also work with a community. We can arrange care inside assisted living and other communities, from companion visits to personal care, for a parent who wants more company or hands-on help. After a rehab stay, hospital-to-home care covers the return, with someone there through the first days. A spouse at home while the other is in a community can have companion hours for meals, company and the evenings. Adult day fits too: caregivers can cover the mornings and evenings around a day program.

Before you choose

Questions to ask on a tour

Take the questions below with you and write the answers down. Visit at different times of day, and if you can, once at a meal.

  • Care and changes

What help is included, and what costs extra? What happens if my parent's needs change? How does a move between levels work?

  • Staff

Who is on at night? How do staff learn a resident's routines? How are families kept informed?

  • Memory care

What does an ordinary afternoon look like? How do staff respond when a resident is anxious? What training do they have?

  • Rehab

Is there a bed open on the day we need it? What therapy is provided and how often? Who coordinates the move home?

  • Contracts

Can I read the residence agreement at home? What are the notice terms for leaving?

  • Adult day

Which days and hours? Does the program serve our address? What meals and therapy are included? How does a first day work?

Paying for it

Paying for each option

Endurance is private pay and does not accept insurance directly. Families with a long-term care insurance policy can use it, and we help with the paperwork. LongTermCare.gov says long-term care insurance is designed to cover personal and custodial care at home, in a community organization or in a facility, reimbursing a daily amount up to a limit.

Medicare and most health insurance, including Medigap, don't pay for long-term care, including care in a nursing home or in the community. Medicare doesn't pay for 24-hour care at home or for custodial or personal care when that is the only care needed. For a stay after a hospital, ask the hospital's care team and the facility what your coverage includes, and confirm with your plan.

Some help is free or based on income. The New Jersey Alzheimer's Adult Day Services Program subsidizes adult day care for a person with a physician-documented dementia diagnosis, with income and asset guidelines, and you apply with the center. Essex County's Respite Care Program is for caregivers of Essex County residents who do not exceed the income threshold or have Medicaid, with a co-pay based on income.

How does care at home compare with assisted living?

Assisted living is an apartment in a community, and your parent moves there. Care at home brings the help to your parent's own house, on the schedule you set. Neither is right for everyone, and some use both. We can arrange care inside assisted living and other communities too.

Can Endurance provide care for someone who lives in assisted living?

Yes. We arrange care inside assisted living and other communities in New Jersey, from companion visits to personal care. It can add company, help at meals or someone through a hard stretch. A registered nurse visits first and writes the plan with you.

Who can help me decide?

SAGE Eldercare in Summit offers free counsel from a licensed social worker, including guidance and referrals for assisted senior living. Jewish Family Service of MetroWest offers free telephone Care Consultation for family caregivers. You can also talk with us; the first conversation is free, and nothing starts until you say so.

How do families pay for these options?

Endurance is private pay. Medicare and most health insurance don't pay for long-term care, including a nursing home or care in the community. Long-term care insurance may cover personal and custodial care at home or in a facility. Ask each facility what your coverage includes.
