What senior living and care options are there in Darien, CT?

Darien has Maplewood at Darien, Atria Darien and the Residence at Selleck's Woods, with memory care at Maplewood and Selleck's Woods. We did not find a nursing home in Darien, and the nearest are in Stamford, Norwalk and New Canaan, and the nearest adult day programs are in New Canaan, Norwalk and Cos Cob. Care at home works alongside any of them.

Start here

How to decide which kind of place or help fits

Start with the day before the building. What does a normal day look like for your parent now, and which parts have become hard: the morning routine, meals, remembering medications, getting out of the house, the night? Then ask what your parent wants. Many people want to stay in their own house, some want company and a place that handles the meals, and some need nursing.

The options are not a ladder. A parent can use home care and an adult day program, or live in assisted living with companion visits added, or come home after a rehab stay with care in place. If you are not sure, a call to Human Services, which serves as Darien's Municipal Agent for the elderly, or to the regional Aging Answers line is free, and a conversation with our care team costs nothing.

The options

Each option, and what Darien has

Darien has three senior living communities that we found, and we did not find a nursing home in town in the state's Nursing Facility Registry, so skilled nursing and rehab means Stamford, Norwalk or New Canaan, each a short drive. Communities in other towns are marked as such below.

  • Care at home

Help in your parent's own house at the hours you choose, from a few hours a week to live-in or 24-hour care. In Connecticut Endurance provides companion care and personal care. Skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, a separate company.

  • Independent living

Housing with services but without personal care. In Darien, Atria Darien at 50 Ledge Road and the Residence at Selleck's Woods at 1 Parklands Drive both offer independent living. In Stamford, Edgehill is a life plan community with independent living apartments and a Lifecare plan. In New Canaan, The Inn at Waveny is Waveny's independent living residence.

  • Assisted living

A residence where staff provide personal care and monitoring through the day. Maplewood at Darien (599 Post Road), Atria Darien and the Residence at Selleck's Woods are in Darien. All three are licensed in Connecticut as Assisted Living Service Agencies. Others are in Norwalk (Bridges by EPOCH, Maplewood at Strawberry Hill and Brightview on New Canaan, which is in Norwalk despite its name) and Stamford (Waterstone on High Ridge, Brighton Gardens and Fairfield County House).

  • Memory care

Maplewood at Darien has a separate memory care program with a team assigned to the same group of residents and secured patios and gardens. The Residence at Selleck's Woods also lists memory care. Atria Darien lists assisted and independent living only, with no memory care on its Darien page. In New Canaan, The Village at Waveny has a licensed nurse and certified nursing assistants on site around the clock, with respite stays as brief as thirty days.

  • Skilled nursing and rehab

The nearest are Stamford Care Center, Ark Healthcare Rehabilitation at St. Camillus, Civita Care Center at Long Ridge, The Villa at Stamford and Edgehill in Stamford, Norwalk Care Center, Notre Dame Convalescent Homes and Autumn Lake Healthcare at Norwalk in Norwalk, and Waveny Care Center in New Canaan. Stamford Care Center is about 6 minutes from Town Hall and Waveny about 13 (routing estimates).

  • Adult day

No adult day center exists in Darien in the sources we checked. Waveny's Navigator program in New Canaan is for people with Alzheimer's or dementia, Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. ElderHouse in Norwalk is a medical and social adult day center that names Darien among the towns it serves, and River House in Cos Cob is a nonprofit medical model center. Both are open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Together or instead

How home care works alongside a community, or instead of one

Home care brings the help into your parent's own house, and for some families that decides it. For others a community is the right place, and home care still has a part.

In Connecticut, Endurance provides companion care and personal care inside assisted living and other communities. A caregiver can add hours for company, for meals, for the evenings, or for the days after a move, when your parent knows no one. Ask the community how it works with outside caregivers.

Home care also covers the gap around a day program. Navigator runs 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM and ElderHouse 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, so the mornings, evenings and nights still need someone, and so does the ride, since the programs we verified are outside Darien. After a rehab stay in Stamford, Norwalk or New Canaan, a caregiver can be in place when your parent comes home.

On a tour

Questions to ask on a tour

Bring a list and ask the same questions at each place, so the answers are comparable.

  • The day

What does a normal weekday look like for a resident like my parent? What happens at night, and who is awake? How quickly do staff come when a resident calls?

  • The help

Which kinds of personal care are included, and which cost extra? What happens when needs increase, and at what point would my parent be asked to move?

  • The staff and the license

Who is on site overnight, and what are their licenses? Can I see the community's current Connecticut Assisted Living Service Agency license? Is the same person usually there from week to week?

  • The practical

What is the monthly fee, what does it include, and how much notice is given for an increase? The transportation listed for appointments and shopping: how far ahead do I book, and does a staff member go along? How does the community work with an outside caregiver or a family member who visits daily?

  • The setting

Can my parent bring their own furniture? Where do residents go outdoors, and is it easy to walk? What are meals like, and can they be changed?

Paying

Paying for each option

Medicare does not pay for most long-term, custodial care, and the rules differ between settings. Its home health benefit covers part-time skilled care for people who are homebound. It does not cover 24-hour care, or custodial care when that is the only care needed. Ask each facility and your parent's plan what is covered, for how many days and at what cost.

Home care with Endurance is private pay. Long-term care insurance can cover personal and custodial care at home, usually as a daily amount up to a limit, and we help with policy paperwork. Veterans may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, an add-on to a VA pension. We do not publish prices.

For help sorting out the options, Human Services assesses benefits and program eligibility, and the Southwestern CT Agency on Aging runs Aging Answers and the CT Home Care Program, an alternative to nursing home placement for eligible seniors. For assisted living and memory care, ask each community for its fee schedule in writing.

Questions families ask

Is there a nursing home in Darien, CT?

We did not find one in the Connecticut state registry. The nearest are in Stamford, Norwalk and New Canaan, between about 6 and 16 minutes from Town Hall, plus Wilton Meadows in Wilton, about 24. Call each for current admissions. Nursing at home comes from Endurance Home Health, a separate company.

What assisted living is there in Darien?

Maplewood at Darien on the Post Road, Atria Darien on Ledge Road and the Residence at Selleck's Woods on Parklands Drive. All three are licensed as Assisted Living Service Agencies. Maplewood and Selleck's Woods also list memory care, and Atria lists assisted and independent living only. Tour each one and ask to see the current license.

Where is memory care near Darien?

In Darien, Maplewood at Darien and the Residence at Selleck's Woods list memory care, and Atria Darien does not. In New Canaan, The Village at Waveny serves people with memory impairment, and Waveny Care Center has a secure unit for advanced memory impairment. Home care with memory support is another route for some families.

Where is a rehab center near Darien?

The nearest short-term rehab is in Stamford, Norwalk and New Canaan. Waveny Care Center in New Canaan offers inpatient short-term rehab. Stamford Hospital and Northwell Norwalk Hospital case managers help families find rehab before discharge. Ask whether your parent's plan covers the stay.

Is there adult day care in Darien?

The sources we checked list none. The nearest are Waveny's Navigator program in New Canaan for people with Alzheimer's or dementia, ElderHouse in Norwalk, which names Darien among the towns it serves and offers a free trial day, and River House in Cos Cob. Ask about transportation and about the hours before and after.

Can my parent keep a home caregiver after moving to assisted living?

Yes, in Connecticut. Endurance provides companion care and personal care inside assisted living and other communities, so a caregiver your parent already knows can come with them. Ask the community how it works with outside caregivers, and tell us what hours would help.

How is assisted living different from home care?

Assisted living is a residence where staff provide personal care and monitoring through the day on the community's schedule. Home care keeps your parent in their own house, with help at the hours you choose. Some families use both. Neither route is the right one for everyone, and a call to our care team costs nothing.

Who can help us compare our options in Darien?

Darien Human Services, which serves as the town's Municipal Agent for the elderly, gives information about community resources and refers families to the right agency. The Southwestern CT Agency on Aging runs an Aging Answers line. Our care team can also talk through what a week at home would look like.

Does Medicare pay for a nursing home or assisted living?

Medicare does not pay for most long-term, custodial care. Ask each facility and your parent's plan what is covered after a hospital stay, for how many days and at what cost. Long-term care insurance, if your parent has it, can cover personal and custodial care in several settings. We help families read the policy.
