Start here
How to decide which kind of place or help fits
Start with the day, not the building. What does a normal day look like for your parent now, and which parts have become hard: the morning routine, meals, remembering medications, getting out of the house, the night? Then ask what your parent wants. Many people want to stay in their own house, some want company and a place that handles the meals, and some need nursing.
The options are not a ladder. A parent can use home care and an adult day program, or live in assisted living with companion visits added, or come home after a rehab stay with care already in place. If you are not sure where to begin, the Senior Center's resource page for families, Stamford Hospital's Care Management and the city's Older Adults Directory are free places to ask, and a conversation with our care team costs nothing.
The options
Each option, and what Stamford has
Names below are current. Benchmark at Stamford is the former Sunrise of Stamford, ARK Healthcare and Rehabilitation at St. Camillus is the former St. Camillus, Civita Care Center at Long Ridge was Long Ridge of Stamford, Stamford Care Center was Cassena Care, and The Villa at Stamford was Smith House. The city's directory still uses some older names.

Atria Stamford, Benchmark at Stamford (Mind & Memory Care), Brighton Gardens, The Residence at Summer Street (Reflections Memory Care), Waterstone on High Ridge and Edgehill (Mind & Memory Care) list it. Ask each how the unit is staffed and how they handle wandering.

Charter Oak Communities, the housing authority, lists older adult housing.
Adult day
The adult day options we verified are outside the city. River House in Cos Cob lists Greenwich and Stamford as towns it serves, and ElderHouse in Norwalk lists Stamford among its towns, open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, with a complimentary visit day. The Connecticut Association of Adult Day Centers lists others.
Working together
How home care works alongside a community, or instead of one
Some families choose home care from the start. Some move a parent into assisted living and add companion visits inside the community, for familiar company, walks, rides to appointments and the hours the staff cannot give one person. Some start with a rehab stay and plan the return home before the discharge date.
In Connecticut we provide care inside assisted living and other communities, as companion care or personal care, and a plan for coming home after a stay. Skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, our separate company. Tell us what a day looks like now, and we will talk through what could help.
On a tour
Questions to ask on a tour
Ask the same questions at every place so you can compare. Write the answers down, and ask for the fee schedule in writing.
What is included?
Ask what the monthly fee covers, what costs extra, and what happens to the fee if your parent's needs change.
How is care staffed?
Ask who is on site at night, how many residents each caregiver looks after, and what training the memory care staff have.
What happens if needs change?
Ask when a resident would need to move to another level of care, and who makes that decision.
What does a day look like?
Ask to see a meal, an activity and the outdoor space, and whether your parent can try a short stay first.
Is the license current?
Connecticut's Department of Public Health lists assisted living service agencies and their status. Ask the community for its current license and check it.
Is there a wait list?
Waterstone on High Ridge says it has limited availability and a wait list. Ask every community how long a wait would be.
Paying
Paying for each
Endurance is private pay and does not accept insurance directly. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. It covers home health only when a person needs skilled care and is homebound. Medicare also says it does not pay for most long-term custodial care, so you pay those costs yourself unless Medicaid or a private long-term care insurance policy applies.
A long-term care insurance policy can cover personal and custodial care at home, usually as a daily amount up to a limit, and we help with the policy paperwork. Veterans may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance. Ask each community for its fee schedule in writing, and ask the hospital case manager what is covered for a rehab stay. We do not list or compare prices for any community.

Questions families ask
What assisted living is there in Stamford, CT?
Atria Stamford, Benchmark at Stamford, Brighton Gardens of Stamford, The Residence at Summer Street and Waterstone on High Ridge list assisted living, and Edgehill lists it on its Lifecare campus. Waterstone states limited availability and a wait list. Ask each for its fee schedule in writing and for its current license.
Is Sunrise of Stamford still open?
No. The former Sunrise of Stamford at 251 Turn of River Road now operates as Benchmark at Stamford. Brighton Gardens of Stamford, at 59 Roxbury Road, is a separate Sunrise Senior Living community that lists assisted living, memory care and short-term stays.
What nursing homes are in Stamford?
The Connecticut registry lists ARK Healthcare and Rehabilitation at St. Camillus, Civita Care Center at Long Ridge, Stamford Care Center, Edgehill and The Villa at Stamford. The city's directory still uses older names for some. We have only a name and address for three of them, so ask each facility directly what it offers.
Where can my parent do rehab after a hospital stay in Stamford?
Stamford Hospital has the Van Munching Acute Rehabilitation Unit for patients who need 24-hour medical monitoring and can take part in three hours of therapy, five days a week. Skilled nursing facilities also offer rehab. Ask your case manager which fits, and whether a stay comes before going home.
What memory care is there in Stamford?
Atria Stamford, Benchmark at Stamford (Mind & Memory Care), Brighton Gardens, The Residence at Summer Street (Reflections Memory Care), Waterstone on High Ridge and Edgehill (Mind & Memory Care) list memory care. Ask how each unit is staffed. At home, we also arrange memory support with a caregiver who keeps routines steady.
Is there adult day care in Stamford?
The adult day options we verified are outside the city. River House in Cos Cob lists Greenwich and Stamford among its towns, and ElderHouse in Norwalk lists Stamford and is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. The Connecticut Association of Adult Day Centers lists more, with each center's model and certification.
Can you provide care inside an assisted living community in Stamford?
Yes. In Connecticut we provide care inside assisted living and other communities, as companion care or personal care, by the hour or on a longer schedule. A registered nurse visits first and writes the plan with your family. Skilled nursing and therapy come from Endurance Home Health, our separate company.
Is home care or assisted living better for my parent?
Neither is right for everyone. Home care keeps your parent in their own house with help at the hours you choose. Assisted living provides meals, activities and personal care in a residence. Some families combine them. Start with what a day looks like now and what your parent wants, and we'll talk it through with you.
How do families pay for assisted living or a nursing home?
Ask each community for its fee schedule in writing. Medicare does not pay for most long-term custodial care, so you pay those costs unless Medicaid or a private long-term care insurance policy applies. Ask the hospital case manager what is covered for a rehab stay. We do not list or compare prices.
