Respite care in Stamford
If you're the one holding the days together, a break is part of the plan. We arrange a caregiver at home in Stamford for an afternoon, a night, a weekend or longer, so you can rest, work or get away while your mother or husband is looked after.
Can we arrange respite care in Stamford?
Yes. We arrange respite care at home in Stamford from our Long Ridge Road office, by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock, so a family caregiver can rest, work or travel. A registered nurse visits first and writes the care plan with your family, and a Care Manager keeps you updated while you are away.
What respite at home looks like
Respite can be an afternoon so you can see a doctor, a few mornings a week, an awake overnight caregiver so you can sleep, a weekend away, or a longer stretch with a live-in caregiver or 24-hour care. In Fairfield County every schedule is available, as companion care or personal care.
A caregiver steps into the routines your mother already has: breakfast, her afternoon walk, the evening routine. A registered nurse visits first and writes the care plan with you, so the caregiver knows what a good day looks like. Your Care Manager keeps you updated and adjusts the plan as needs change.
How it fits around the Senior Center, adult day and support groups
Respite does not have to replace what your parent already enjoys. The Stamford Senior Center is open to anyone 60 and older, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and a caregiver can come along with a member who needs help and must stay with the member at all times. A caregiver can get your father ready, take him, and bring him home.
For adult day, River House in Cos Cob lists Greenwich and Stamford among its towns and describes respite for caregivers at home, and ElderHouse in Norwalk lists Stamford and is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, with a complimentary visit day. A caregiver can cover the morning before, the ride, and the hours after.
Support groups are for you. The Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter offers support groups, held virtually or in person, and Stamford Health lists support groups on its classes and events site. A caregiver can stay with your mother while you attend.

Respite after a hospital stay
The weeks after a hospital stay can wear out the person arranging everything. Stamford Hospital's Care Management team plans the discharge with you, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM, with an on-call social worker in the evenings and on weekends, and can discuss home services, skilled nursing and rehabilitation.
Some communities list short stays: Benchmark at Stamford lists Respite Care, Brighton Gardens of Stamford lists Short-Term Stays and The Residence at Summer Street lists Temporary Stay. Ask each what a short stay includes. Or the break can happen at home: Endurance Homebound is our plan for the first 72 hours after a hospital stay, and we can keep hours going after that. In Connecticut, skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy come from Endurance Home Health, our separate company.

The state respite program
According to the City of Stamford's Older Adults Directory, the Southwestern CT Agency on Aging administers the CT State Respite Care Program, and a mandatory assessment must be completed before respite services are provided. Confirm current details with the agency.
Endurance is private pay and does not accept insurance directly. If you are waiting on an assessment, or want more hours than a program gives you, a registered nurse from our team can visit, get to know your mother and write the care plan with you.

How to start
Call or send a request and tell us who needs care, where they live and what hours you want covered. You don't need the right words, and nothing starts until you say so. A registered nurse comes to the house, and your Care Coordinator chooses a caregiver and introduces them before the first visit.
Many families begin with one afternoon, so your mother can meet the caregiver while you are still in the next room. Then you can add hours, nights or a weekend. If a longer trip is coming, tell us the dates and what a typical day and night look like, and we will talk through hourly, overnight, live-in or 24-hour care.
Questions about respite care in Stamford
How long can respite care last?
It can be an afternoon, a few mornings a week, a night, a weekend or longer. Tell us the dates and what a typical day and night look like, and we'll help you choose between hourly care, an awake overnight caregiver, live-in care or 24-hour care with awake shifts.
Can someone stay overnight so I can sleep?
Yes. An awake overnight caregiver can be there for the night hours, for help to the bathroom or settling back to sleep. If the nights and the days are both hard, live-in care or 24-hour care with awake shifts may suit better, and we will talk through which fits.
Will my mother meet the caregiver before I leave?
Yes. We choose a caregiver for the person and introduce them before the first visit. Many families start with an afternoon at home so everyone gets comfortable. If it isn't working, tell us and we will find someone else. A backup plan is written into the care plan.
Can respite care be arranged after a hospital stay?
Yes. Endurance Homebound is our plan for the first 72 hours after a hospital stay, and hours can continue after that. Tell us when your parent is due home and what the hospital has said. Stamford Hospital's Care Management can also talk through options.
Does Connecticut pay for respite care?
The City of Stamford's directory says the Southwestern CT Agency on Aging administers the CT State Respite Care Program and that a mandatory assessment must be completed before respite services are provided. Confirm current details with the agency. Endurance is private pay and does not accept insurance directly.
Does Medicare cover respite care at home?
Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home. It covers home health only when a person needs skilled care and is homebound. Endurance is private pay, and if there is a long-term care insurance policy we help with the paperwork. We talk through the cost with you rather than quote a rate card.
What if my husband has dementia?
We arrange memory support at home, with a caregiver who keeps routines steady. Each caregiver takes three-hour sessions on managing dementia and Alzheimer's symptoms, and our nurses hold the eight-hour Certified Dementia Educator certification. Our Stamford dementia care page goes into more detail.
Can a caregiver go with her to the Senior Center or adult day?
At the Stamford Senior Center a caregiver can accompany a member who needs help and must stay with the member at all times. Adult day centers set their own rules, so ask River House or ElderHouse. A caregiver can help your mother get ready, get there and get home.
What if she needs nursing while I'm away?
In Connecticut, our separate company, Endurance Home Health, provides skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy, and it can work alongside her caregiver. Tell us what the doctor has ordered and what the days look like, and we will plan the caregiver's hours around it.
