Can someone living with dementia get care at home in Stamford?

Yes. Endurance Home Care provides memory support at home in Stamford, arranged from our office in the city. A caregiver keeps meals, routines and company steady in a familiar house, with hands-on personal care where it's needed, on whatever schedule suits: hourly, overnight, live-in or around the clock. A registered nurse visits first and writes the care plan with your family.

Start with the city's Older Adults Directory

The City of Stamford publishes an Older Adults Directory. Its Caregiver/Respite Counseling section is written for families caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia, and it names the Southwestern CT Agency on Aging as the agency that administers the CT Home Care Program.

It's a good list to keep by the phone. Once you know what the city and state can offer, tell us which hours are still hard, and we'll plan help at home around them.

State respite care starts with an assessment

According to the city's directory, Connecticut State Respite Care can include home health aides, homemaker and companion services among other kinds of help, and a mandatory assessment has to be completed before any respite service is provided.

Our care is arranged privately, on its own schedule. If you're waiting on that assessment, or want more hours than a respite plan gives you, a registered nurse from our team can visit, get to know your father or your wife, and write the care plan with you.

The Stamford Senior Center on Washington Boulevard

The Stamford Senior Center is at 888 Washington Boulevard, and membership is open to adults 60 and over. It describes itself as a community focal point for aging issues and invites families to call for help finding resources for someone they care for. Its resources page lists the Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter and the Southwestern CT Agency on Aging under caregiver resources.

If your mother enjoys a morning there, a caregiver can help her get ready, drive her over and bring her home, and keep the rest of the day familiar.

Support groups are for the family

The Ferguson Library's StamfordConnect guide lists the Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter for support services, care options and education for families facing dementia. The Association says its Connecticut caregiver support groups are for unpaid family members and friends caring for someone with dementia, and aren't meant for paid caregivers.

So the group is your hour. A caregiver can stay at home with your husband while you go, which lets you give the meeting your full attention.

Questions about dementia care in Stamford

Do you provide dementia care at home in Stamford?

Yes. Our office is at 60 Long Ridge Rd, Suite #214, Stamford, and we provide memory support at home across the city: a caregiver who keeps routines, meals and company steady, with hands-on help with bathing and dressing where it's needed, by the hour, overnight, living in or around the clock.

How are your caregivers trained for dementia?

Each caregiver takes three-hour sessions on managing dementia and Alzheimer's symptoms, and our nurses hold the eight-hour Certified Dementia Educator certification. Most of our caregivers are CNAs, and training continues every month.

Can our caregiver come with us to an Alzheimer's support group?

The Alzheimer's Association says its Connecticut caregiver support groups are for unpaid family members and friends, so paid caregivers don't attend. What a caregiver can do is stay at home with your mother while you go.

What happens before Connecticut respite services start?

The City of Stamford's Older Adults Directory says a mandatory assessment must be completed before State Respite Care services are provided. Private care with us starts with a conversation and a nurse's visit at home, and nothing begins until you say so.

Can dementia care at home include help with bathing and dressing?

Yes. In Connecticut, memory support can include hands-on personal care: bathing, dressing, toileting and moving around safely, as part of the plan the nurse writes with you. Caregivers also give medication reminders and keep the day's routine on track.
