    You are cooking, driving, answering the phone and not sleeping through the night. The caregiver group at the JCC meets monthly, and the Aging in Place Initiative can point you to local help. Regular companion hours give you a morning off, or an overnight companion lets you sleep.

    You call every Sunday and something is always a little off in the answers. Your Care Manager keeps you posted on how the week went, who visited and what changed, so you aren't relying on a phone call alone.

    Edgemont's postal address says Scarsdale, but it sits in unincorporated Greenburgh. Which senior programs your parent can join depends on the municipality, not the mailing address. Our companion care works the same on either side of that line, and we can help you plan around whichever programs apply.

Across Scarsdale

Scarsdale's neighborhoods, and how senior companion care is arranged across them

The Village of Scarsdale uses ZIP code 10583 for every address, from downtown around Village Hall at 1001 Post Road to the residential sections around it. The Village's neighborhood associations map, dated January 2014, names Arthur Manor, Fox Meadow, Greenacres, Heathcote, Quaker Ridge and Edgewood (under the Drake Edgewood label). Confirm the current list with the Village. We have not found separate ZIP codes for individual neighborhoods.

Your Care Manager works from our Stamford office and your companion comes to you, wherever in Scarsdale that is. Most of what a week here involves is close together: the Senior Club on Heathcote Road is about 4 minutes by car from Village Hall, the library about 3 minutes, and the Aging in Place Initiative about 2 minutes. White Plains Hospital is about 8 minutes away, so a companion can plan a visit and a ride around a clinic appointment without leaving much slack.

Edgemont is a separate case, covered in the next section.

Is Edgemont part of Scarsdale?

Edgemont: a Scarsdale mailing address in the Town of Greenburgh

No. Edgemont is not part of the Village of Scarsdale. The Village of Ardsley's own FAQ says it plainly: "No, Ardsley Road is in unincorporated Greenburgh in an area known as Edgemont and with a Scarsdale postal address." The Edgemont school district uses a Scarsdale, NY 10583 mailing address at 300 White Oak Lane, and says it is available to confirm whether an address is within Edgemont.

That matters when you are looking for help. The Senior Club taxi benefit is for Village of Scarsdale residents only, and the Village's Scarsdale Senior Club and pool are Village services. Greenburgh's senior programs are the Town's to confirm: the Gerard J. Byrne Center at Anthony F. Veteran Park in Ardsley is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays with classes and day trips, and the Greenburgh Nutrition Program serves residents 60 and older. The Town's pages do not say whether Edgemont addresses qualify, so ask Greenburgh Parks and Recreation before you plan around them.

The Aging in Place Initiative is a joint effort of the Village and Scarsdale Edgemont Family Counseling Service. The counseling service describes itself as supporting families in Scarsdale and Edgemont, while the Aging in Place page itself speaks of Scarsdale residents, so ask which applies to your parent. County programs, such as NY Connects and the county nutrition program, serve every Westchester municipality, including Scarsdale and Greenburgh. Companion care from Endurance does not depend on the municipality.

Hospitals and coming home

The hospitals Scarsdale families use, and a plan for the way home

The hospitals families from Scarsdale use are outside the Village. Most use White Plains Hospital (about 8 minutes by car from Village Hall) or NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester in Bronxville (about 9 minutes). Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, about 19 minutes away, is the county's academic medical center. NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester is the name on the Bronxville hospital now, though its web address still says Lawrence.

Each hospital has its own going-home guidance. White Plains Hospital asks for transportation to be arranged by 11 a.m. on the day, and says it can arrange a local taxi or ambulette but insurance does not cover the fee. Most patients get a follow-up call from the WPH Cares team soon after. NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester's official checkout time is 11 a.m., its case managers and social workers help arrange what comes next, and a written notice explains how to appeal if you think it is too soon. Westchester Medical Center's patient guide explains how social workers and case managers plan after the stay.

A short plan helps. Before the day: ask the care management team who your contact is, write down the follow-up appointments, and decide who will be at the house when your parent arrives. The first night: someone in the house, a meal that doesn't need much work, and the hospital's written instructions where everyone can find them. The first week: rides to follow-up appointments, groceries, and someone to keep company while you catch up on sleep.

Endurance helps with the companion side of that week: someone in the house, meals, errands, and rides and company at appointments, by the hour, overnight or live-in. Questions about medication, wounds or therapy go to the hospital team and your parent's doctor. The Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps also offers pre-arranged non-emergent ambulance transports home from the hospital within Westchester, if your parent can't ride in a car.

Home or a community

Assisted living, rehab and adult day: what is nearby, and how it differs from care at home

Care at home means your parent stays in the house, with help arranged around their day. Assisted living is an apartment in a community with staff nearby. Memory care is a separate neighborhood in a community for people living with memory loss. Skilled nursing and rehab are for people who need nursing or therapy after a hospital stay or for the long term. Adult day programs are a place to spend the day while someone else is at work or resting. Independent living is housing for people who need no personal help but want services and company.

The nearby options are mostly just outside the Village. Sunrise of Scarsdale lists assisted living and memory care, but its address is 9 Saxon Woods Road, White Plains. The Bristal at White Plains offers independent lifestyle, assisted living and memory care. Atria Woodlands in Ardsley lists independent living, supportive living and memory care. Sprain Brook Manor, at 77 Jackson Avenue, is a skilled nursing and short-term rehab facility in the Scarsdale postal area. Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is in White Plains, not Scarsdale. For adult day, the county lists St. Andrew's Day Program in Hartsdale, plus medical programs in Hawthorne and Dobbs Ferry. We could not verify a life plan community near Scarsdale.

Endurance's own offer in New York is companion care. For a parent who has moved into a community, companion visits can add company, outings, errands and rides. For a parent who is still home, a companion can fill the week around an adult day program or a Senior Club schedule. We do not partner with or refer to any community listed here.

Programs in town

The Senior Club, Aging in Place and the rides, and how a companion fills the hours between

The Scarsdale Senior Club, run by Scarsdale Parks, Recreation and Conservation at 244 Heathcote Road, is for residents 60 and older. It runs crafts classes, talks, film screenings, holiday celebrations, field trips and exercise classes in person or on Zoom. Membership runs September 1 to August 31 and you can register online, in person or by phone. Members who are Village residents get one-way taxi rides, up to $25, to local medical and dental appointments, and free Thursday admission to the Scarsdale Pool Complex after 1:00 pm in summer.

The Aging in Place Initiative, run by the Village with Scarsdale Edgemont Family Counseling Service at 14 Harwood Court, offers outreach, in-home assessment, referrals, friendly visiting and planning help. A monthly Coffee and Conversation group meets at the Scarsdale Girl Scout House, and free Vital Aging workshops on nutrition, fall prevention and Medicare run with the Recreation Department. Scarsdale Public Library has a Resources for Seniors section, a Homebound book delivery service run by the Friends of the Library, and a calendar you can filter by Seniors.

For rides beyond the taxi benefit, Bee-Line ParaTransit is a shared, curb-to-curb county service for people who functionally cannot ride the regular bus, with reservations a day or more ahead. The Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps offers pre-arranged non-emergent transports. For meals, the county nutrition program lists Meals on Wheels of Scarsdale. The county's Care Circles help family caregivers organize volunteers for rides and companionship.

A companion fills what these programs leave open: the ride home after the taxi, the Thursday afternoon with nothing planned, the lunch after the talk, and the evenings and weekends. Nothing here replaces the Senior Club or the volunteers. It works alongside them.

Outings

Places to go together: the market, the library, the nature centers and the parks

A good outing has an easy place to park and a place to sit. The Sunday farmers market on Spencer Place at Chase Road runs 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM through November. Harwood Park and Library Pond is one of the Village parks. The Museum Pass Program lets cardholders borrow free passes, including the Bruce Museum and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, for three days.

For a slow walk, the Nature Center at Greenburgh at 99 Dromore Road has free grounds and five unpaved trails; dogs aren't allowed and the second-floor Live Animal Museum has no elevator. The Weinberg Nature Center at 455 Mamaroneck Road has trails and a Trailside Museum, though the Village gives no hours, so call first. Saxon Woods Park in White Plains requires proof of Westchester residency and offers an all-terrain Trackchair by reservation.

Choosing an agency

How to choose a home care agency in Scarsdale

Start with what kind of help your parent needs. In New York, an agency that provides nursing or aide services needs a license from the state Department of Health. The state's Business Express portal says an agency that provides solely companionship with light housekeeping does not need that license. So the first question to any agency is which of those two things it offers. The Department of Health's Health Profiles site lets you search licensed home care services agencies.

Then ask how the agency works: who visits first and who writes the plan, how the caregiver is chosen and whether you meet them before the first visit, who you call when something changes, how the agency screens caregivers, what happens if a caregiver can't come, and how families are billed. Ask it to put the schedule and the rate in writing.

A registered nurse visits first and writes the plan with your family. Your caregiver is chosen for your parent and introduced before the first visit. Cost and paying

What sets the cost of companion care in Scarsdale, and how families pay

The cost depends on the schedule (a few hours a week, overnight, live-in or around the clock), how many days, and the kind of help. Endurance publishes no prices; we explain the cost in the first conversation once we know what your family needs.

For a reference point only, the CareScout 2025 Cost of Care Survey puts the New York state median for an in-home caregiver at $35 an hour. CareScout notes that any one provider's price can differ from the median, so it tells you roughly where the market is and nothing about any agency's rate.

Endurance is private pay, so families pay from savings, income or other resources. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork; ask the insurer what it reimburses. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home, and says it does not cover most long-term custodial care. Veterans may ask about VA benefits.

Family far away

Arranging companion care in Scarsdale when you live somewhere else

Many families arranging care here live in another city or another country. You can start by phone: tell us about the days, the house and the people your parent sees. A registered nurse then visits your parent at home to plan the care, and you meet the companion before the first visit.

From then on your Care Manager is your contact, so you hear how the week went without having to chase it. Local programs help too. The Aging in Place Initiative can send a friendly visitor, the library delivers books to homebound cardholders, and NY Connects, the county's free information line, can answer questions about services nearby. A companion can attend the Senior Club or a medical appointment with your parent and tell you how it went.

    In the Edgemont area, about 8 minutes from Village Hall. Grounds are free and open daily from dawn to dusk; the Manor House and Live Animal Museum are open Tuesday to Sunday 10 AM to 4 PM and closed Mondays. It has five marked trails, all unpaved, and dogs are not allowed. The Live Animal Museum is on the second floor with no elevator or accessible entrance, but the Welcome Center and main floor of the Manor House have accessible bathrooms.

The Bronx River Pathway section between North Broadway and Fisher Lane is closed until further notice.

    Is Edgemont part of Scarsdale?

    No. Edgemont is unincorporated Greenburgh with a Scarsdale postal address, as the Village of Ardsley's FAQ puts it. Village programs such as the Senior Club taxi benefit are for Village residents only, and Greenburgh's senior programs are the Town's to confirm. We provide companion care to Edgemont addresses just the same.

    Can someone live in or stay overnight?

    Yes. A companion can live in the home, with agreed working time and a proper night's rest, or stay awake overnight, or work shifts around the clock. A live-in companion isn't the same as an awake overnight companion, so we talk through which one matches how your parent's nights actually go.

    What is the closest hospital to Scarsdale?

    White Plains Hospital at 41 East Post Road is about 8 minutes by car from Village Hall, and NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester in Bronxville is about 9 minutes. In an emergency call 911. Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla is about 19 minutes away.

    What help can my parent get when coming home from the hospital?

    The hospital's care management team plans the medical side, and White Plains Hospital asks for the ride home by 11 a.m. and NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester's checkout time is 11 a.m. We help with the companion side: someone in the house, meals, errands, and rides and company at appointments. Medication and care instructions stay with the hospital team and your parent's doctor.

    What is the Scarsdale Senior Club, and how do the rides work?

    It is run by Scarsdale Parks, Recreation and Conservation for residents 60 and older, with classes, talks, outings and exercise. Members who are Village residents get one-way taxi rides, up to $25, to local medical and dental appointments. A companion can go with your parent and arrange the return trip.

    What is the Aging in Place Initiative?

    It is a joint effort of the Village of Scarsdale and Scarsdale Edgemont Family Counseling Service. It offers outreach, in-home assessment, referrals, friendly visiting and planning help. Edgemont families should ask whether they qualify. A companion can work alongside it with regular hours at home.

    Is assisted living or care at home the right choice?

    It depends on the person. Assisted living is an apartment in a community with staff nearby, while care at home keeps your parent in familiar rooms with help arranged around the day. Many families try companion hours first and revisit if needs change. Our senior living page compares the options near Scarsdale.

    How do I choose a home care agency in Scarsdale?

    First find out whether the agency offers companionship only. If an agency also sends aides for hands-on help, that requires a New York license, so check the state's list. Then ask who visits first, how the caregiver is chosen, how families are billed, and what happens if a caregiver can't come. Ask for the schedule and rate in writing.

    Are you a private home care agency?

    Yes. Endurance is private pay, so families pay from their own resources, and we do not bill insurance directly. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.

    How much does companion care cost?

    It depends on the schedule, the number of days and the kind of help, and Endurance publishes no prices. For a market reference, the CareScout 2025 survey puts the New York state median for an in-home caregiver at $35 an hour, though any provider's price may differ. We explain the cost in the first conversation.

    I live out of town. How can I arrange care for a parent in Scarsdale?

    You can start by phone. A registered nurse visits your parent at home to plan the care, you meet the companion before the first visit, and your Care Manager keeps you posted on how the week went. Local programs, such as the Aging in Place friendly visitors, can add to that.
