The City of Rye, New York
Senior living and companion care in and around Rye
One campus in Rye covers independent living through skilled nursing, and two more nursing facilities sit just over the line in Port Chester. Here is what each is, and where companion care at home or inside a community fits.
What senior living options are there in Rye, NY?
The Osborn at 101 Theall Road is the one campus in Rye with independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehabilitation. The Enclave at Rye and King Street Home are skilled nursing facilities in Port Chester. We found no adult day program in Rye on the county directories. Endurance provides companion care, at home or inside a community.
How to decide what kind of place or help fits
Start with the day and what it needs. Where does help run out: meals, the evenings, getting to appointments, the nights, remembering things? If the answer is company, meals, errands and rides, care at home may be enough. If your parent needs more than that, such as medication help or nursing, look at assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing, or ask your parent's doctor which kind of care applies. Endurance does not provide those in New York.
Ask your parent what they want. Many people want to stay in the house, and some want the company and routine of a community. A hospital case manager, the Osborn's admissions staff and NY Connects, the county's free information line, can each help you compare. Check which Rye an address is in before you start: the City's programs, Rye Brook's and Port Chester's differ.
Assisted living in Rye
Assisted living is an apartment in a community with staff nearby for daily help. In the City of Rye, the one we could verify is The Osborn's Grandview Assisted Living Residences at 101 Theall Road, which lists three licence types: Assisted Living Residence, Enhanced Assisted Living Residence and Special Needs Assisted Living Residence. Ask which one applies and what each level of help adds.
The Osborn is also a life plan community, so a couple can ask how a move between independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing works on one campus. It lists short stays too, which some families use to try a place or to give a caregiver a break.
Memory care in Rye
A memory care community is a staffed neighborhood for people living with memory loss. The Osborn's Edward C. Pasciuti H.O.P.E. Center is a 13-suite memory care center on the Rye campus, with round-the-clock oversight from professionals certified in dementia care, as the community describes it.
Endurance does not provide memory care services in New York. If your parent moves to a community, or is weighing one, companion visits can add company, outings and rides. The Osborn also hosts a free Alzheimer's Association caregiver group on the third Thursday of each month, 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Nursing homes and rehab in and near Rye
Skilled nursing and rehabilitation is a medical setting, for a short stay after a hospital or a longer one. The Osborn's Pasciuti Pavilion offers short-term and outpatient rehabilitation and long-term care, with direct admission. In Port Chester, about 2 and 8 minutes from Rye City Hall, The Enclave at Rye Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and King Street Home Inc (listed as King Street Rehab) are licensed skilled nursing facilities. Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains is an inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation hospital.
Admission usually starts with the hospital case manager and the doctor. Ask the facility what it needs from the hospital, and what happens to the room if your parent returns home. Endurance does not provide skilled nursing or therapy in New York. A companion can visit during a stay and be at home when your parent returns.
Adult day care near Rye
We found no adult day program in Rye, Rye Brook or Port Chester on the county directories. The nearest verified are River House in Cos Cob, Connecticut, a medical model program open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a registered nurse on site, and Club Wartburg in Mount Vernon, which serves Westchester and the Bronx. Ask each how pickup works from Rye.
A program covers weekday daytime, and families often need the rest: the ride, the evenings, the weekend and the nights. Companion care can fill those, by the hour.
How companion care works alongside or instead of a community
Instead: some families find that company, meals, errands, rides and someone in the house, by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock, is the help their parent needs. Alongside: a companion can visit a parent in assisted living or another community for company, outings, errands and rides, and can be at home when a rehabilitation stay ends.
We do not provide the community's care and we have no partnership with any community. Each community sets its own rules for outside visitors, so ask before you book. A registered nurse visits first to plan the care, you meet the companion before the first visit, and your Care Manager keeps you posted.
Questions to ask on a tour
Ask what a typical day looks like and who is on duty at night. Ask which services are in the monthly fee and which cost extra, how the fee changes when needs change, and how the community decides a resident needs a different level. Ask about visitor hours, outside companions and moving between levels on one campus.
Ask how the community handles a hospital stay and what happens to the apartment. Ask how families are told when something changes. Take your parent, take a list, and take a second visit at a different time of day.
Paying for each
Medicare says it does not pay for most long-term custodial care, including care in a nursing home or in the community. Assisted living and memory care are generally paid privately, through long-term care insurance if your parent has a policy, or through Medicaid where eligible. Ask each community for its fee schedule in writing. For short rehabilitation stays, ask the hospital case manager and the facility what your parent's coverage includes and for how long.
Care at home with Endurance is private pay, and we publish no prices. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Westchester County's EISEP arranges in-home help for adults 60 and older on a sliding fee, and NY Connects can tell you what else is available.
