What are good things to do with an older parent in Greenwich, CT?

Short outings with parking and a place to sit work well. Bruce Park and the Bruce Museum share a trip, Greenwich Common Park and Binney Park suit a bench-to-bench walk, and Greenwich Point and Byram Park are the beaches. Park passes apply, and The town says Wallace Center programs are transitioning to two Civic Centers.

Easy outings close to home

Bruce Park is the town's oldest public park, donated in 1908, with walking paths, ponds and waterways and views of Long Island Sound, open sunrise to sunset. The Bruce Museum sits inside it, open Tuesday through Sunday, with a free digital guide on a phone through Bloomberg Connects.

Greenwich Common Park, at 290 Greenwich Avenue, has chess tables, picnic tables and a walking track. Binney Park in Old Greenwich has stone bridges, a gazebo, a pond and restrooms. Cos Cob Park has a gazebo and theatre seating over Long Island Sound, and a walking group meets there.

Montgomery Pinetum Park in Cos Cob has benches, ponds and a 1.9-mile loop that the town calls moderately challenging, so a short stretch near the benches may suit better than the full loop. Mianus River Park has river trails but no picnic facilities, and the Greenwich Audubon Center's trails are open year-round from sunrise to sunset.

The water and the parks: pass rules

Greenwich Point Park (Tod's Point) in Old Greenwich is a 147.3-acre town-owned beach with concessions, restrooms, picnic areas and walking trails, open 6 a.m. to sunset. Park passes or tickets apply, so check the town's current season dates. The town lists an ADA beach mat and a beach wheelchair, but confirm availability with Parks & Recreation before you go.

Byram Park in Byram has a beach, a pool, a walking track, picnic areas, restrooms and water fountains, open from 8 a.m. to sunset, with the main pool open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Park passes or tickets are required. Island Beach is reached by seasonal ferry from downtown from June, with ferry tickets and beach passes required.

Residents 65 and older with a valid Senior OnePass Park option do not have to prove residency each year, because the pass is active for a five-year cycle, currently January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2030. The town's Seasonal Passes page lists the other options.

Culture and learning

The Greenwich Historical Society in Cos Cob offers tours of the Bush-Holley House and exhibition tours led by the Senior Curator. Call ahead to ask about the steps and how long a tour lasts.

Greenwich Library, at 101 West Putnam Avenue, has large print books on the first floor and lends a wheelchair, walker and electric 4-wheel scooter for use inside. The Byram Shubert and Cos Cob branches are smaller, and the Cos Cob Library runs a Movie Monday program. If your parent cannot get to the library, the Homebound Delivery Service serves residents who are physically unable to visit, and the Book Van delivers to senior residences in Greenwich every two weeks.

The YMCA of Greenwich lists LIVESTRONG, Parkinson's Body & Mind and Walk With Ease. Its homepage reported an elevator out of service on 2026-10-22, so confirm accessibility with the Y first.

The senior center calendar, moving to two Civic Centers

The Wallace Center, the town's senior center, is transitioning its programs to the Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center (90 Harding Road, Old Greenwich) and the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center (449 Pemberwick Road, Glenville), ahead of upcoming renovations at 299 Greenwich Avenue. Membership is free for Greenwich residents 55 and older, and transportation is available. Registration is online through MyActiveCenter.

The calendar lists daily classes. The ones the town names include Tai Chi, chair yoga, a Technology Lounge and two walking groups, Walk the Distance at Cos Cob Park and at Grass Island. Check the calendar for the day and the site before you set off.

How a companion caregiver makes outings happen

Most outings fail on the logistics, not the destination: the ride, the parking, the pace, the bathroom, the bench, the timing of a nap. A companion caregiver can drive or go along on a Call-A-Ride, carry the folding chair, set a pace your parent likes and choose the quiet hour. They can also stay for the Wallace Center class and bring your parent home.

Rides need booking. Call-A-Ride is free for residents 60 and older and should be booked a week or two ahead. TAG Dial-A-Ride needs a day's notice. A caregiver can handle those calls, and can drive when a program is booked up or the trip comes up at short notice.
