What are good things to do in Rye Brook with an older parent?

Crawford Park's gardens and walking path, Rye Hills Park, Pine Ridge Park's village events and the Senior Center's weekday lunch and trips all work, and Rye Town Park is a short drive away. The beach is closed until 2027 and Playland is closed for the season. A companion can drive and stay alongside.

Easy outings close to home

Crawford Park at 122 North Ridge Street covers more than 35 acres between North Ridge Street and Lincoln Avenue, with gardens, lawns, woods and a walking and jogging path. The Crawford Mansion Community Center hosts classes, including SPRYE's Gentle Chair Yoga on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon. The Town of Rye owns the park and posts its events.

Rye Hills Park, behind Crawford Park, is a passive park with a walking trail, game tables, a storytelling circle and a belvedere overlooking Long Island Sound. Garibaldi Park sits beside the Senior Center. The Rye Brook Athletic Fields at 830 King Street have a walking path, bathrooms and a concession stand, with parking at Blind Brook High School. Ask the village which of its parks has a bench close to parking.

The water and the parks

Rye Town Park and Oakland Beach sit on Long Island Sound at 95 Dearborn Avenue, about 14 minutes from Village Hall. The beach is closed for the 2026 season and reopens in 2027; off-season the beach gates are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and dogs are not allowed on the sand. The senior permit age is 65 and over, lifetime renewals are in person, and a season permit does not come with a reserved space.

The park has introduced two beach wheelchairs. Bring a caregiver who can transfer and push, and the caregiver's admission fee is waived. The wheelchairs stay on the sand.

Playland, the county amusement park and beach at 1 Playland Parkway in Rye, is closed for the season. The 2026 season closed September 13, and 2027 dates are not yet published. Its site lists an ADA Access Pass page with boarding instructions for each ride, and county park passes are not honored there.

Culture and learning

The Neuberger Museum of Art at Purchase College, 735 Anderson Hill Road, is open Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 5 p.m., with admission listed as free for now. ADA accessible parking is near the Performing Arts Center, and visitors pay at a pay station.

In Rye, the Rye Nature Center has trails open daily from sunrise to sunset, and the Jay Estate grounds are open dawn to dusk with the mansion open only for special programs and the gardens closing after November 1. The Port Chester Public Library, funded by Rye Brook and Port Chester, shows no hours or senior programs on its site, so call before you go.

The Senior Center calendar

The Rye Brook Senior Center at the Posillipo Community Center, 32 Garibaldi Place, is open to adults 55 and older, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a hot lunch every weekday. Exercise includes Tai Chi, Low Impact Aerobics, Strength Training, Weight Training and Chair and Floor Yoga, and the center holds special events with music and plans weekly trips and overnight trips. Dues are payable each September.

The village's senior services page carries the daily schedule and the newsletter. The village Dial-A-Ride covers rides to club functions for residents who no longer drive, with 24 hours' notice. Its schedule PDF is dated 2019, so confirm days and times.

How a companion caregiver makes outings happen

Most outings stall on the practical parts: someone to drive, a place to park, the walk from the car, a seat, the wait. A companion handles those. They drive or ride along, drop you at the door, pace the walk to your parent, carry the bag and stay alongside, and they can bring your parent home and see them settled.

Regular outings help too. A weekly companion visit that always includes Crawford Park or the Senior Center gives the week a shape. On the days the Dial-A-Ride does not line up, a companion can drive. Tell us the places your parent likes and we will plan the hours around them.
