What distinguishes it from the other large Essex townships is the ground it sits on. West Orange runs up the Watchung ridge, and a great many of its residential streets have a real gradient rather than a nominal one. Eagle Rock Avenue, Northfield, Prospect and the streets off them climb.

For most of a life that is scenery. For somebody in their eighties who has begun to find distance harder, it is the single most limiting fact about where they live, and it arrives long before anything a doctor would name. This is why in West Orange the first thing that tends to go is not the ability to manage indoors. It is the walk to anywhere, and with it the errands, the neighbours and the reason to put shoes on.

The median West Orange home was built in 1956. On a slope that generally means a house with steps up from the pavement to the front door before any internal staircase is reached, and often a driveway that climbs.

Those external steps deserve naming separately from the internal ones, because they are weather-exposed, frequently unlit and usually the first obstacle of the day rather than the last. A household can manage a full internal flight comfortably and still be defeated by four steps up from a wet pavement in January.

West Orange does more than most Essex townships about this. It runs its own Senior Citizen Transportation Program alongside the county provision from Verona, and the Department of Senior Services operates from Room 207 at 66 Main Street. If your parent qualifies and the timing works, use it before you buy anything.

The township does not publish a booking window for that programme, so confirm it directly rather than assuming. What is safe to assume, because it is true of every municipal programme in the county, is that it runs weekday daytime hours and does not cover an evening or a Saturday.

West Orange is well served by Essex County standards. There is a township senior department, a township transport programme, county provision from the Division of Senior Services at 900 Bloomfield Avenue in Verona, and Saint Barnabas Medical Center a short drive away in Livingston.

The honest advice for a family here is therefore to spend the public provision first. It is free or close to it, it is competently run, and a household whose hard hours fall inside weekday daytime may need nothing else for a long time.

What none of it covers is the evening, the weekend, or the fortnight after something changes. A discharge from Saint Barnabas on a Friday afternoon lands in a window where every municipal and county service is closed until Monday, and that gap is not a criticism of anyone. It is simply the shape of publicly funded provision everywhere.

That is what private hours are for in this township, and it is a narrower and cheaper proposition than a blanket package.
