Home care in Ho-Ho-Kus

It is worth setting out what the borough actually provides, because it is unusually little and because the borough itself is straightforward about it. Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at the Education Center of the Hermitage, with dessert and coffee at noon and a general meeting at one. Residents aged 55 and over are welcome.

The borough's own page also tells any senior citizen who needs minor assistance in or around the home to contact the local Boy Scout troop. That is not a criticism of anybody. It is a small municipality being honest that it does not run a home-help service, and pointing at the willing hands it does have.

Everything beyond those two afternoons is Bergen County's, delivered from the Northwest Senior Activity Center on Center Street in Midland Park. That centre is real and it is in a different municipality, which for somebody who has stopped driving is the whole difficulty.

None of that is scandalous for a borough of four thousand people. It does mean that any plan built on the assumption that the town will provide a weekly structure has to be checked, because the town provides a fortnightly one.

Bergen County runs ten senior activity centres. They are in Bergenfield, Palisades Park, Elmwood Park, Ridgefield Park, Garfield, East Rutherford, Midland Park, Hackensack, North Arlington and Wallington. Read that against a map and not one of them sits in the northwest estate belt.

Ho-Ho-Kus, Allendale, Ridgewood and part of Saddle River are all covered by the Midland Park centre. Alpine, Franklin Lakes and Upper Saddle River are further out again. Counties put centres where the population density is, and the density is not in these boroughs.

The consequence is a pattern we see across this corner of the county and almost nowhere else: the wealthiest towns have the least municipal older-adult infrastructure, and the gap between what a county directory implies and what is reachable from a particular front door is at its widest here.

Tenafly, thirty minutes east in the same county, has its own senior centre on South Summit Street. Same county, same county transport, opposite answer to whether there is anything within walking distance. That is why a Bergen address needs checking rather than assuming.

Ho-Ho-Kus has around 4,270 residents and a median build year of 1957, which makes it one of the smallest and one of the more recently built places we cover. Both facts point the same way.

Post-war houses of that period are comparatively kind to age in: wider staircases than pre-war stock, a decent chance of a bathroom on the entry floor, doorways a walking frame fits through. The building is usually not the constraint here, which is unusual in our New Jersey coverage.

What is the constraint is that a small borough with no walkable centre, no municipal bus and a fortnightly club offers very little natural structure to a week. Somebody who stops driving in Ho-Ho-Kus does not lose access to a service so much as lose access to the day having a shape.

So the arrangements that work here look different from the ones an hour south. Less personal care, more standing blocks that put somebody in the house on a rhythm and, crucially, get the person out of it. That is a smaller purchase than most families arrive expecting to make.

Everything we provide is daily-living. Personal care, bathing, dressing, mobility support and transfers within a caregiver's training, medication reminders, meal preparation, the household routine, companionship, and getting somebody to an appointment and home again, which in this borough carries more of the value than it does most places.

Nothing about the line beyond that is soft. No skilled nursing, no wound care, no injections, no therapy, no medication administration or dose adjustment, and no clinical assessment or advice. Where a clinical plan already exists we work under it rather than directing it.

We will also say plainly when the answer is not care. If somebody here is isolated rather than unsafe, a driving arrangement and one standing weekly commitment may do more than personal care would, at a fraction of the cost. We would rather tell you that than sell hours against it.

And where a large house on a quiet street has simply become the wrong place to be, that is worth discussing properly rather than deferring by adding hours until the question stops being asked. It is the family's decision, and it deserves to be an informed one.
