What care looks like inside the house

Care here is bought in hours, not in beds, and four shapes cover almost every household. What fills those hours is ordinary and specific: companion care at home, personal care, homemaking, transportation, and medication reminders. Where the household is living with a dementia, that becomes memory care at home, and when the house cannot be empty overnight the same schedule extends to around-the-clock and live-in care.

The line between those and anything clinical is not a soft one. Caregivers remind, they do not administer. They accompany, they do not treat. Most households start with one shape because one shape is what the week needs right now, then add hours as that changes, which is why the schedule is written to be rewritten rather than signed once.

There is no senior center here, and no library. So where does the week happen?

Most Bergen County towns of this age profile run something for older residents: a center in the municipal building, a library up the street, a bus that will collect somebody at the door. The borough publishes none of the three. That is the part a caregiver covers, and a caregiver can also make the drive, wait through the appointment, bring somebody home, and still be there while the coat comes off.
