Care options in Woodcliff Lake
Help for the days, the nights, or both
Some families need a few hours a week. Others want someone there overnight, or living in. Here's what each option looks like at home.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Any of these can be companion care, which covers company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and rides, or personal care, which adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing and moving around safely. See how live-in care and 24-hour care differ.
The borough van: three days, one stop a day
Woodcliff Lake's Senior and Disabled Van runs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9AM to 2PM. Tuesdays are food shopping, Wednesdays are doctor appointments and the local pharmacy, and Thursdays are senior meetings and local errands. Reservations have to be made 24 to 48 hours ahead, and each rider gets one location a day.
So an appointment on a Monday or a Friday, a visit after 2, or a second stop on the way home needs another plan. A caregiver can drive your mother on those days, stay with her at the appointment and carry the shopping in when she gets home.
Meals, library books and a monthly lunch
Meals on Wheels North Jersey serves Woodcliff Lake, with volunteer drivers bringing a two-meal package and a daily wellness visit to homebound seniors. On the second Wednesday of the month the borough van goes to Paramus Park, and on the third Wednesday to the Hillsdale Senior Luncheon.
For library borrowing, the borough reimburses residents toward a membership at a neighboring town's library, up to $200 for residents 62 and over, at libraries including Hillsdale, Park Ridge and Westwood. A caregiver can make the library run part of the week, along with the meals, company and errands the van and the deliveries leave open.

Questions Woodcliff Lake families ask
When does the Woodcliff Lake senior van run?
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9AM to 2PM, booked 24 to 48 hours ahead, with one location per rider each day. Wednesday is the day for doctor appointments and the pharmacy. A caregiver can drive your parent on the other days or later in the afternoon.
Can a caregiver help my mother get to senior events?
Yes. The borough van goes to the Hillsdale Senior Luncheon on the third Wednesday of the month. A caregiver can help her get ready, drive her when the van isn't an option, and keep her company on the days in between.
Does Meals on Wheels reach Woodcliff Lake?
Yes. Meals on Wheels North Jersey lists Woodcliff Lake among the Bergen County towns it serves, with a two-meal package and a daily wellness visit for homebound seniors. A caregiver can cover breakfast, the rest of the meals and the rest of the day.
Can someone stay overnight with my parents?
Yes. An awake overnight caregiver is up through the night hours if either of them needs help. If they'd like someone there day and night, live-in care or 24-hour shifts are options, and we'll talk through which fits.
How do families pay for home care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.
