Does Endurance Home Care provide home care in Leonia?

Yes. We help families throughout Leonia from our Short Hills office, about 38 minutes away. Care can be hourly, awake overnight, live-in or around the clock, and it can be companion care or personal care with hands-on help. A registered nurse visits first and writes the care plan with you, and we introduce the caregiver before the first visit.

Riding the Leonia senior bus with a companion

Leonia's senior bus is free and door to door for borough residents who are 60 or older, or 18 and over and on Medicare disability. The Senior Services office publishes the trips each month, and riders register and book ahead: three days for shopping and Leonia Walks outings, five business days for a medical appointment.

One rule matters for a lot of families. Anyone who needs help getting on and off the bus, or who has memory loss, has to ride with a family member, a neighbor or an aide. A caregiver can be that person, and can help your mother get ready beforehand and settle back in at home. When the bus isn't going where she needs to be, the caregiver can drive her instead.

Meals, a spare key and the hours in between

Bergen County Meals on Wheels delivers a mid-day meal on weekdays in Leonia to residents 60 and over who are homebound and can't shop or cook for themselves. Its rules say a participant receives no more than four hours of in-home help during the day, so if you're planning longer days of care, check with the county first. A caregiver can cook her lunch instead, or we can plan the hours around the delivery.

Operation Blue Angel, run by the Leonia Police Department with the Senior Center, gives a free combination lockbox for a spare key to residents 55 and over, or anyone medically impaired and often alone, so emergency crews can get in if she can't open the door. It's a sensible thing to set up alongside care, especially for the hours when nobody is with her.

Getting started

How care is arranged in Leonia

It starts with a conversation, and nothing begins until you say so.

  1. A conversation

Call or send a request. Tell us who needs help, where they live and what's been getting harder. You don't need the right words.

  2. A nurse visits at home

A registered nurse comes to the house in Leonia, gets to know everyone and writes the care plan with you.

  3. You meet the caregiver

We choose a caregiver for the routines and preferences that matter and introduce them before the first visit. If it isn't working, we find someone else.

  4. Updates as you go

Your Care Manager keeps you posted and changes the plan with you when needs change.

Questions Leonia families ask

Can a caregiver ride the Leonia senior bus with my mother?

Yes. The borough asks that anyone who needs help getting on and off, or who has memory loss, ride with a family member, neighbor or aide, and a caregiver can be that companion. Book through Senior Services ahead of time, five business days for medical trips.

Does Leonia have a senior center?

Yes. Leonia Senior Center is at 305 Beechwood Place and is run by the borough's Senior Services. Its monthly calendars have listed free classes such as chair exercise and watercolor painting, and a caregiver can help your parent get there and back.

Can home care work alongside Meals on Wheels in Leonia?

Yes. Bergen County's program serves Leonia, and its rules mention no more than four hours of in-home help during the day. Tell us about the delivery and we'll plan the caregiver's hours with you, or the caregiver can make meals at home instead.

How do families pay for home care?

Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.
