Home care in Wyckoff

Bergen County runs ten senior activity centres. The one covering this corner is the Northwest Senior Activity Center at 46 to 50 Center Street in Midland Park, which adjoins Wyckoff.

Wyckoff's own senior bus publishes a destination list that stays inside the Township: doctors and dentists in Wyckoff, the library, the post office, town hall, the YMCA, three named shopping centres, banks in Wyckoff, and the Larkin House.

Midland Park is not on that list, because Midland Park is not in Wyckoff. So a resident who cannot drive has a township bus that will take them to nine kinds of place locally and cannot take them to the county centre that exists specifically to serve them.

That is the Bergen pattern in its sharpest form. The county puts its centres where the density is, the townships run buses inside their own borders, and the join between the two is where an older resident without a car actually falls.

The Valley Hospital moved to 4 Valley Health Plaza in Paramus in 2024. It is where Wyckoff discharges come back through, and it is outside the Township.

The senior bus does not go there. Its healthcare destinations are physicians, dentists and other providers in Wyckoff, which covers the routine and stops at the town line. For anything hospital-based a resident is on Bergen County Community Transportation, which reaches a given municipality on set days rather than on request.

So the shape of the gap in Wyckoff is unusually clean and unusually inconvenient. Everything local is well covered, twice a week, four hours a day. Everything hospital-shaped is not covered at all by the township.

It is worth adding that the bus runs jointly with the Christian Health Care Center, a private non-profit healthcare operator. That partnership is why the service exists and it does not change the geography.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, ten until two. That is the whole window, and it is worth sitting with, because it is eight hours of availability in a week.

For somebody organised and still fairly independent it is enough: a Tuesday appointment, a Thursday shop, the library in between. For a household where mornings are slow, an appointment has to fit between ten and two on one of two days, and a great many appointments do not.

Age 55 and over, which is generous, and disabled residents of any age. That low floor is the best feature of the service and it means people can build the habit early, before they need it, which is when habits actually form.

Everything outside those eight hours falls to the county, and the county reaches a town on its own schedule rather than on demand.

Wyckoff has around 17,050 residents and 21.4 per cent of them are over 65, which is high for Bergen and higher than most of the towns around it. The median home dates to 1965.

Mid-sixties construction is comparatively kind: wider stairs than pre-war stock, doorways that take a walking frame, and often a bathroom on the entry floor or the room to add one. The house is rarely what stops somebody in Wyckoff.

What stops them is that this is a township of large lots without a walkable centre, where the shops, the doctor and the library are all a drive apart even though they are all technically in town. Losing a licence here does not shrink somebody's world gradually; it removes most of it at once, and the township bus restores eight hours a week of it.

That is a real restoration and it is not a full week. The part left over is what families ring us about, and it is usually smaller than they feared.

Everything we provide is daily-living. Personal care, bathing, dressing, mobility support and transfers within a caregiver's training, medication reminders, meal preparation, the household routine, companionship, and the journeys that leave the Township.

Nothing about the line beyond that is soft. No skilled nursing, no wound care, no injections, no therapy, no medication administration or dose adjustment, and no clinical assessment. Where a clinical plan already exists we work under it rather than directing it.

The single most useful thing we tell people here is to use the township bus for everything it covers, which is more than they expect, and to plan separately for anything with the word hospital in it, which it does not cover at all.

After that the honest gap is Valley Hospital appointments, the fortnight after a stay there, and the days that are not Tuesday or Thursday. That is a defined arrangement rather than an open-ended one, and it should end when the person is steady.
