Care options in Huntington
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
The Park Avenue Senior Center and the Beach House
The Town's Senior Division runs the John J. Flanagan Senior Center at 423 Park Avenue, open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Lunches there are open to any Suffolk County resident 60 and over, and activities are for Town residents who are at least 60 and hold a Senior Membership Card. The Town also has senior clubs in several locations, computer instruction and AARP's Smart Driving Course, and the Senior Beach House at 239 Little Neck Road in Centerport, which looks out over Centerport Bay, runs seasonally.
A companion can drive your mother to Park Avenue, stay for lunch if she'd like company, take her to the Beach House in season, and be there after the center closes at 4:30 and on weekends.
Buses, paratransit and the rides in between
Public buses run through Huntington's HART system, Suffolk County Transit and Nassau's NICE, and the routes reach the Senior Center. The buses are handicap accessible, and seniors and Medicare cardholders are eligible for reduced fares. HART also offers paratransit, with reduced priority, to non-disabled senior residents who can't drive and have no easy access to the fixed routes. It requires registration and enrollment first, and HART operates only within the Town of Huntington.
A companion can drive to places and at times the bus and paratransit don't cover, including beyond the Town line, and stay through the visit. Once you're there, shopping and errands fit into the same trip.
