Care options in Manhasset
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Where Manhasset's senior programs meet
Nassau County's list of senior centers has none in Manhasset. It assigns Manhasset to the Great Neck Senior Center on Grace Avenue, which is open weekdays with lunch, a lending library, ping pong, a piano and transportation. Reservations are required for meals, rides and exercise classes. Closer to home, the Town of North Hempstead's directory lists Active Seniors of Manhasset, which meets at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation on Shelter Rock Road, and an AARP chapter at Church of Our Savior Lutheran on Northern Boulevard.
With the main center in Great Neck, getting there is part of the day. A companion can make the reservation, drive your mother over, stay for lunch if she'd like company and bring her home. A companion can also cover the evenings, nights and weekends, when the center is closed.
Project Independence, and the hours between rides
Project Independence is the Town of North Hempstead's program for older residents, the first comprehensive aging-in-place initiative sponsored by a local government in New York State. The Town's offices are on Plandome Road in Manhasset. Residents 60 and over get free taxi rides to shopping centers twice a week between 10am and 2pm, on days that vary by community, and discounted rides to medical appointments. Rides are booked a day ahead, before 4pm, with a limit of three bags per rider, and drivers can't physically help a rider into the taxi.
A companion fills in what the taxi schedule leaves out: shopping on the other days, carrying the bags inside, evening errands and appointments outside the Town's list. Meals on Wheels brings one hot meal and a cold supper between 11am and 2pm on weekdays to eligible residents, and a companion can be home to receive the delivery and sit down to eat with your father.

Credentials and recognition
Questions Manhasset families ask
Does Manhasset have a senior center?
Not on Nassau County's list. The County assigns Manhasset to the Great Neck Senior Center at 80 Grace Avenue, which has lunch, transportation and activities on weekdays and requires reservations. Active Seniors of Manhasset meets at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation on Shelter Rock Road.
What is Project Independence?
It is the Town of North Hempstead's program to help older residents stay in their own homes and communities, run by the Town's Department of Services for the Aging. It includes taxi rides for residents 60 and over: free food-shopping trips twice a week and discounted rides to medical appointments, booked a day ahead before 4pm. A companion can drive on the days and to the places the taxis don't.
Can a companion bring my father books and movies from the Manhasset library?
Yes. Manhasset Public Library at 30 Onderdonk Avenue lends books, and cardholders can borrow ebooks and audiobooks through Libby and stream movies, music and comics through Hoopla. A companion can pick up and return his books, or set up Libby on a tablet and sit with him while he tries it.
How do families pay for companion care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare doesn't pay for ongoing daily help at home.
