Care options in Great Neck
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Lunch, classes and a ride at the Great Neck Senior Center
The Great Neck Senior Center, at 80 Grace Avenue, is run by Great Neck Senior Citizens Inc. and funded through Nassau County's Office for the Aging. It serves Great Neck, Lake Success and Manhasset on weekdays, with lunch, a lending library, ping pong, a piano and transportation. Reservations are required for meals, rides and exercise classes, so someone has to make the call.
A companion can make that call, keep the day on the calendar and go along when your mother wants company. A companion can also fill the evenings, nights and weekends, when the center is closed. Other groups meet nearby too, including REAP at the Cumberland Adult Center on Cumberland Avenue and the Mashadi Senior Club on Steamboat Road.
Taxi days and tax forms
Great Neck's villages are part of the Town of North Hempstead. Its Project Independence gives residents 60 and over free taxi rides to shopping centers twice a week, and discounted rides to medical and dental appointments. Rides are booked at least a day ahead, before 4pm, and drivers can't physically help a rider into the taxi. In the Village of Great Neck itself, tax exemptions are filed each year between October 1 and December 31.
A companion can carry the bags in from the taxi, run the errands the shopping days don't cover and keep the exemption form where it won't get lost, with a reminder as the date nears. The program lists aides as riding at no additional charge, which is worth asking the Town about if you'd like a companion on those trips.
