Care options in Port Washington
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
The Center on Manorhaven Boulevard, and the one in Roslyn
The Town of North Hempstead lists the Port Washington Adult Activities Center at 80 Manorhaven Boulevard. Nassau County's list of senior centers also assigns Port Washington to the Roslyn center at Trinity Episcopal Church on Northern Boulevard, which is open weekdays from 9am to 4pm with lunch, food shopping, a lending library and transportation.
A companion can take your father to whichever one suits him, stay for lunch if he'd like company and bring him home. A companion can also spend evenings and weekends with him, cook the supper he likes and sit down to it with him. Check each center's current hours with the Town and the County.
Taxi rides, Meals on Wheels and the library
The Town of North Hempstead pays for free taxi rides for food shopping, two days a week between 10am and 2pm, and deeply discounted rides to any medical office in the Town, for residents 60 and over. Rides are booked at least a day ahead, before 4pm, riders can bring three bags, and an aide can ride along at no additional charge. Meals on Wheels brings one hot meal and a cold supper between 11am and 2pm, Monday through Friday, to eligible residents.
A companion fills in around those rides: driving to the shops and appointments on the other days, keeping your mother company on the way and through the visit, and a drive on short notice. A companion can be home when the meal arrives and eat with your mother. The Port Washington Public Library at One Library Drive will deliver books to a member free, and a companion can choose them with her.
