Care options in Kings Point
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Taxi rides from the Town of North Hempstead
The Town's Project Independence gives residents 60 and over free taxi rides to designated shopping centers twice a week, between 10am and 2pm, with the days varying by community. It also offers discounted rides to medical, dental and treatment appointments, seven days a week. Rides are booked at least a day ahead, before 4pm, and food-shopping riders can bring up to three bags. Drivers can't physically help a rider into the taxi.
A companion can be at the door when the taxi arrives, carry the bags in and put the groceries away, and drive on the days the program doesn't run or to places it doesn't go. The program lists aides as riding at no additional charge, which is worth asking the Town about if you'd like a companion on those rides.
Senior groups on the Great Neck peninsula
Kings Point is one of the Town of North Hempstead's incorporated villages, and Nassau County's list of senior centers has none here. It lists the Great Neck Senior Center at 80 Grace Avenue, which serves Great Neck, Lake Success and Manhasset on weekdays, with lunch, a lending library, ping pong, a piano and transportation. The Town's directory also lists the REAP senior group at the Cumberland Adult Center and the Mashadi Senior Club on Steamboat Road. Call ahead to ask how each one welcomes Kings Point residents.
A companion can make that call, drive your mother to a group or to lunch on Grace Avenue, stay if she'd like company and bring her home on her own schedule. The Village also invites residents to sign up on its website for weather and public safety alerts, Village news and event reminders, and a companion can help her do that.
