Care options in Garden City
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
A week at the Senior Center on Golf Club Lane
The Village's Recreation and Parks Department runs the Senior Center for residents 60 and older, with hours from 9am to 4:30pm. It offers chair exercise, Tai Chi, meditation, yoga, game days, speakers and lunches. Chair exercise meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10am, lasts about an hour and can be done sitting, and the schedule adds a resistance band class. The Village's senior trips are for residents only and fill first come, first served.
A companion can help your father keep that routine: getting him there in time for a 10am class, driving him home, sharing lunch afterward and signing him up for a trip. Then there are the evenings and the hours the center is closed, which a companion can fill with dinner, errands and company.
Library books, Wednesday rubbish and a free ID card
Garden City Public Library, at 60 7th Street, takes requests through its EXPRESS Pickup form and calls or emails when your books are ready, up to 10 items at a time. The Village collects kitchen waste at the rear or along the side of the house and rubbish at the curb every Wednesday. Bulk items go out only after you ask for a pickup in the Village app and hear back with a date and time.
A companion can make the library request and bring the books home, get the rubbish out on Wednesday morning, and put in the bulk pickup request and wait for the date. Garden City sits in the Town of Hempstead, whose Town Clerk issues free Senior I.D. cards with doctors' contact information and emergency numbers. A companion can take your mother to Town Hall in Hempstead to get one and help her keep it in her purse.
