Companion care in Merrick
A companion can make Merrick's senior centers easier to use: the call to reserve lunch, the ride over and the hours at home once the day's program ends. Tell us how your mother's week runs now, and we'll plan the hours with you.
The first conversation is free, and nothing starts until you say so.

Care options in Merrick
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Two senior centers, one Town and one County
Merrick has two centers to choose from. The Town of Hempstead's Merrick Senior Center is at 2550 Clubhouse Road, and the Town's senior centers are open five days a week for residents 55 and over, with free membership. Nassau County also lists the North Merrick Senior Center at 1260 Meadowbrook Road as serving Merrick, with lunch, food shopping and transportation. Its monthly calendar mixes lunch with classes and clubs through the week.
The County center asks for a reservation for meals, the bus and exercise classes, and suggests $3 for lunch and $1 each way for the bus. A companion can make that call, drive your mother when she'd rather not wait for the bus, stay for lunch if she'd like company, and be there in the evenings and on weekends, when the centers are closed.
The Town's flu clinic and the County's meals
The Town of Hempstead's Senior Flu Vaccine Program holds clinics at its senior centers for residents 55 or older, at no out-of-pocket cost, with appointments strongly recommended. The Merrick Senior Center is one of the clinic sites. Nassau County's Office for the Aging also runs home-delivered meals, and eligibility starts with an in-home assessment by a case manager.
A companion can book the clinic appointment, drive your mother there, wait with her and see her home. On the other days, a companion can keep meals going from the shopping to the table, and make the County's lunch reservation when she'd like a day out.

Credentials and recognition
Questions Merrick families ask
Does Merrick have a senior center?
Yes. The Town of Hempstead's Merrick Senior Center is at 2550 Clubhouse Road, and the Town's senior centers are open five days a week for residents 55 and over, with free membership. Nassau County also lists the North Merrick Senior Center at 1260 Meadowbrook Road as serving Merrick. Check current schedules with each.
How do lunch and the bus work at the North Merrick center?
The County asks for a reservation for meals, transportation and exercise classes. Its monthly calendar lists a suggested contribution for meals and the bus. Residents 60 and over are welcome, with no dues or fees. On days the bus doesn't suit, or for places it doesn't go, a companion can drive.
Can a companion take my father to the Town's flu clinic in Merrick?
Yes. The Town's Senior Flu Vaccine Program is for residents 55 or older, costs nothing out of pocket, and strongly recommends an appointment. The Merrick Senior Center is one of the clinic sites, and the Town posts the dates each season. A companion can drive him, wait with him and bring him home.
How do families pay for companion care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare doesn't pay for ongoing daily help at home.
