Care options in Hewlett
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
A weekday at the Hewlett Senior Center
Nassau County's Hewlett Senior Center at New Horizon Counseling Center, 1490 Broadway, is open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Lunch is served, and there's a lending library, a pool table and a piano. Transportation is available, and the center also serves Cedarhurst, Inwood, Lawrence and Woodmere. Residents 60 and over are welcome, with no dues or fees, and meals are by reservation.
A companion can fill in around those hours: a ride there and back, a book or a game of pool afterward, supper at home, and company on the evenings and weekends when the center is closed.
Meals at home, and the Town's programs
Nassau County also delivers meals to older people at home. A case manager does an in-home assessment first: the program is for people 60 or older, or the spouse of someone who qualifies, who can't safely cook or shop because of impaired mobility. The Town of Hempstead adds its own senior clubs and centers for residents 55 and over, with free membership, and a free Vial of Life kit that keeps an emergency information form in the refrigerator.
A companion can cook the other meals of the day, keep the kitchen stocked, and be there when a delivery arrives, so the weeks without a trip to the center are as easy as the ones with it.

Credentials and recognition
Questions Hewlett families ask
Is there a senior center in Hewlett?
Yes. Nassau County lists the Hewlett Senior Center at New Horizon Counseling Center, 1490 Broadway. It's open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 3:30pm and serves lunch, with a lending library, a pool table and a piano. It welcomes residents 60 and over with no dues or fees, and transportation is available.
Can my mother get meals delivered at home in Hewlett?
Possibly. Nassau County's home-delivered meals start with an in-home assessment by a case manager. The program is for people 60 or older who have impaired mobility and can't safely cook or shop. A companion can prepare the rest of her meals and sit down with her to eat.
What is the Vial of Life?
It's a free Town of Hempstead program for seniors. A decal on the inside of the front door tells emergency crews that you take part, and a container in the refrigerator holds a form with your emergency medical information. A companion can help your mother set it up and keep it where it belongs.
How do families pay for companion care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare doesn't pay for ongoing daily help at home.
