Care options in Bay Head
Help for the days, the nights, or both
Some families need a few hours a week. Others want someone there overnight, or living in. Here's what each option looks like at home.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Any of these can be companion care, which covers company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and rides, or personal care, which adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing and moving around safely. See how live-in care and 24-hour care differ.
Ocean County's Office of Senior Services, and the ride to the doctor
Ocean County's Office of Senior Services serves older residents across the county, including Bay Head, and its services are free. It reports serving over 21,000 seniors a year. Its volunteers do minor home repairs such as installing grab bars, setting up smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and building ramps. It also has certified SHIP counselors for Medicare questions and information on property tax relief programs.
For medical appointments, Ocean Ride's Reserve-A-Ride gives seniors 60 and over door-to-door rides, mostly within Ocean County. Trips are booked by phone from 8:15am to 4:15pm, up to four weeks ahead, and the driver arrives within an hour to an hour and a half of the scheduled appointment time. Drivers can't come into the house, so the rider waits at ground level, and the fare is $6 round trip. A caregiver can get your father ready, wait with him, stay through the visit and see him back inside.
Bay Head Express, and books and meals at home
Bay Head Express, the Ocean County Library's branch, is on the second floor of Bay Head Town Hall at 83 Bridge Avenue, open Monday through Friday from 9 to 4. It handles drop off and pick up of materials, issues and renews library cards, and keeps a small collection of books, DVDs, audio books and Playaways for immediate checkout.
For a parent who can't get out, the library's free Home Borrowers Service sends trained volunteers, usually every three weeks, to residents who are homebound because of illness or disability, with a physician's verification form. Books by Mail is another free option. The county's Home Delivered Meals are there for homebound residents who can't prepare their own. A caregiver fits around all of it, with the company, the cooking and the daily help in between.

Questions Bay Head families ask
Does Bay Head have a senior center?
Bay Head's entry in the Ocean County directory lists no senior center. The Ocean County Office of Senior Services is the place to start, and its services are free. If a program interests your parent, a caregiver can take them and stay with them.
How does my father book Ocean Ride's Reserve-A-Ride from Bay Head?
He or you can call Ocean Ride from 8:15am to 4:15pm, up to four weeks before the trip, and no pre-registration is needed. Requests aren't taken by email. The driver arrives within an hour to an hour and a half of the appointment time and can't enter the house, so a caregiver can get him ready, wait with him and go along if he likes.
Can the library bring books to my mother at home in Bay Head?
Yes, if she is homebound because of illness or disability. Ocean County Library's Home Borrowers Service sends trained volunteers, usually every three weeks, and asks for a physician's verification form. Books by Mail is a free alternative through the postal service.
How do families pay for home care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.
