Care options in Mantoloking
Help for the days, the nights, or both
Some families need a few hours a week. Others want someone there overnight, or living in. Here's what each option looks like at home.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Any of these can be companion care, which covers company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and rides, or personal care, which adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing and moving around safely. See how live-in care and 24-hour care differ.
What the borough sets up for its residents
A caregiver can sit down with your mother and fill in the borough's We Care form, keep her emergency contacts and house key details in order, and help with the everyday jobs the borough's services are built around. The We Care Program is a confidential resident database kept by the police department, so that if an evacuation is ever needed, they know who will need help getting out. The form asks for emergency contacts, caretaker information, medical concerns, special needs and a key for the residence. The borough's flood checklist also asks households with special needs to tell the police department.
Garbage and recycling are collected by backdoor pickup. Trash goes out on Tuesdays and Fridays from April through September and Tuesdays only from October through March, and recycling is collected on Wednesdays. Borough Hall has a take-a-book shelf and a medication drop-off box in its lobby, and Mantoloking Ready sends notifications to anyone who signs up. A caregiver can bring the bins in, return a book and be at the house when an alert comes through.
What Ocean County adds, from rides to meals
Mantoloking's entry in the Ocean County directory lists no senior center, so older residents turn to the county's Office of Senior Services. Its volunteers do minor home repairs such as installing grab bars and setting up smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and Home Delivered Meals are among the services it lists. The Ocean County Library's free Home Borrowers Service brings books to residents who are homebound because of illness or disability, usually every three weeks, with a physician's verification form.
For appointments, Ocean Ride's Reserve-A-Ride takes seniors 60 and over, mostly within Ocean County, in wheelchair lift vehicles. Rides are booked by phone from 8:15am to 4:15pm, up to four weeks ahead, with no pre-registration, and the fare is $6 round trip. The driver arrives within an hour to an hour and a half of the set time and can't come into the house, so the rider waits at ground level. A caregiver can get your father ready, wait with him, stay through the visit and see him back inside.

Questions Mantoloking families ask
Does Mantoloking have a senior center?
Mantoloking's entry in the Ocean County directory lists no senior center. The Ocean County Office of Senior Services is the place to start for repairs, meals and benefits information. If a program interests your parent, a caregiver can take them and stay with them.
What is Mantoloking's We Care Program?
It's a confidential resident database the police department keeps so the borough can plan an evacuation for disabled and transportation-dependent residents. The form asks about caretakers, medical concerns, special needs and a key for the residence. A caregiver can help you fill it in and keep it current.
Can my mother get to a doctor's appointment without driving?
Ocean Ride's Reserve-A-Ride is open to seniors 60 and over, booked by phone from 8:15am to 4:15pm up to four weeks ahead. The driver arrives within an hour to an hour and a half of the set time and can't enter the house. A caregiver can get her ready, wait at ground level with her and go along to the visit.
How do families pay for home care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.
