Home care in Stone Harbor
Every Wednesday afternoon the Stone Harbor Seniors gather at the American Legion for bingo, bridge and board games. If your father would enjoy that but the days around it have gotten harder, a caregiver can help with both. Tell us what you'd like his week to look like, and we'll plan the hours with you.

Care options in Stone Harbor
Help for the days, the nights, or both
Some families need a few hours a week. Others want someone there overnight, or living in. Here's what each option looks like at home.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Any of these can be companion care, which covers company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and rides, or personal care, which adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing and moving around safely. See how live-in care and 24-hour care differ.
Wednesdays with the Stone Harbor Seniors
The Stone Harbor Seniors meet every Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm at American Legion Post 331, on 117th Street at Second Avenue, for bingo, bridge and other board games. On the first Wednesday of each month the group lunches at an area restaurant, and once or twice a year it takes a bus trip to Atlantic City for lunch and a show. All seniors in the area are welcome, including seasonal residents. A caregiver can drive your father there, stay for the afternoon if he likes, and bring him home.
For other trips, Cape May County's Fare-Free Transportation serves senior citizens, people with disabilities, veterans and others on a first come, first served basis, Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm. The county's service announcement says reservations can be requested as soon as two days ahead. A caregiver can cover the mornings, evenings and weekends in between.
Library delivery, the call-in service and meals
The Cape May County Library's Stone Harbor branch is at 9516 2nd Avenue, with public computers, free WiFi, and scan to email and fax. Through its Homebound Delivery Program, patrons who can't get to the library because of injury, illness or disability can receive free monthly delivery of print books, large print books, audiobooks, Playaways and music CDs. The county also lists Mobile Meals (Meals on Wheels) among its aging programs.
The borough's information page describes a Senior Call-In Service for people who live in Stone Harbor year round, which the Police Department can explain, and a property-check form that lists the people to notify in an emergency. The borough also has an emergency notification sign-up. A caregiver fits around all of it, with the meals, the company and the daily help in between.
