Care options in Cherry Hill
Help for the days, the nights, or both
Some families need a few hours a week. Others want someone there overnight, or living in. Here's what each option looks like at home.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Any of these can be companion care, which covers company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and rides, or personal care, which adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing and moving around safely. See how live-in care and 24-hour care differ.
The senior bus, and club days at Carman Tilelli
Cherry Hill's senior bus is free for residents 62 and up and runs Monday through Friday within the township. The township suggests reserving a ride 2 to 3 days ahead on the East or West line for your part of town, then calling the same number between 8:15 and 8:45am that morning to confirm. The bus also brings riders to and from club meetings at 820 Mercer Street. The Maturity Club meets Mondays from 11am to 2pm for bingo, potluck lunches and coffee and cake. The Retiree's Club plays pinochle on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11am to 4pm, and Super Seniors meets on the first, second and fourth Wednesdays from 11am to 2pm for speakers, entertainment, parties and crafts.
The bus stays inside Cherry Hill, so a caregiver covers what it doesn't: an appointment outside the township, a weekend outing, or staying with your mother through a visit. A caregiver can also help her get ready for club day, ride along, and be with her through the rest of the week with meals, company and the house.
Meals, repairs and a free kit from the fire station
The township's food page points to Camden County's Home Delivered Meals, the program formerly known as Meals on Wheels, and to senior bus rides to food pantries for residents 62 and up. The Handy Helper Program is for income-qualified seniors 62 and older: the township arranges a certified contractor for plumbing, carpentry or other minor repairs, free to those who qualify. The Recreation Department offers ceramics, line dancing and square dancing for free year-round, and residents 55 and older can sign up for a Gold Card for discounts on township events and at participating businesses.
Fire Headquarters at 1100 Marlkress Road gives out free Vial of Life kits, a vial for the refrigerator and decals for the front door that hold your medical history for emergency crews. A caregiver can sit down with your mother to fill in the form, take her to a class, and be there for the meals, company and daily help in between.
