Does Endurance Home Care provide home care in West Hartford?

Yes. We provide home care throughout West Hartford from our Stamford office. Your family can choose hourly visits, awake overnight care, live-in care or care around the clock, as companion care or personal care with hands-on help. A registered nurse comes to the house first to write the care plan with you, and you meet the caregiver before the first visit.

Dial-A-Ride, and the trips it doesn't make

West Hartford's Dial-A-Ride is for residents 60 and older, or 18 and older with a qualifying disability, who can't use public transportation. A membership is $65 a year and covers three round trips a week, point to point, with no stops along the way. Rides within town can be for medical appointments, groceries, or things like the hairdresser and the senior centers. Trips to Avon, Bloomfield, Farmington, Hartford and Newington are limited to medical appointments and grocery shopping.

Riders also need to be able to get from the front door to the vehicle on their own. A caregiver covers what's left: a fourth outing in the week, an errand with a stop in the middle, a hand on the way out the door, or sitting with your mother through the appointment. The town's form lets a medically necessary aide ride along at no charge, so ask the Social Services office whether a caregiver qualifies.

Two senior centers, and help that comes to the house

The town runs two senior centers, Elmwood at 1106 New Britain Avenue and Bishops Corner at 15 Starkel Road, with classes, lectures, fitness and trips. Membership starts at age 55 and is free for West Hartford residents. Some help comes to the house too: the public library's volunteers deliver books free to residents who are confined to home by illness, disability or advanced age.

West Hartford also has a Municipal Agent for the Elderly, through Social Services, who gives residents 60 and older information and referrals on housing, financial programs, home care and transportation. A caregiver makes the rest of it easier to use: getting your father to a program he enjoys, helping him choose the books, and being there for the meals and the evenings between visits.

Getting started

How care is arranged in West Hartford

It starts with a conversation, and nothing begins until you say so.

  1. A conversation

Call or send a request. Tell us who needs help, where they live and what's been getting harder. You don't need the right words.

  2. A nurse visits at home

A registered nurse comes to the house in West Hartford, gets to know everyone and writes the care plan with you.

  3. You meet the caregiver

We choose a caregiver for the routines and preferences that matter and introduce them before the first visit. If it isn't working, we find someone else.

  4. Updates as you go

Your Care Manager keeps you posted and changes the plan with you when needs change.

Questions West Hartford families ask

Will West Hartford Dial-A-Ride take my mother to an appointment in Farmington?

Yes, for medical appointments and grocery shopping. Rides to Avon, Bloomfield, Farmington, Hartford and Newington can't be used for other errands. If she'd like to stop at the pharmacy on the way home or have someone stay with her through the visit, a caregiver can drive her.

What does Dial-A-Ride cost, and how many rides does it include?

Membership is $65 a year and allows three round trips a week. Each ride goes from one place to another with no stopping, so a trip that needs a stop in the middle is one a caregiver can take with her.

Can my father use the West Hartford senior centers if he needs help getting there?

Yes. Membership is open from age 55 and free for West Hartford residents, at both Elmwood and Bishops Corner. A caregiver can bring him, stay for a program he likes, and take him home afterward.

How do families pay for home care?

Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.
