Care options in Cayuga Heights
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Meals delivered, or shared with company
Foodnet Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals to Tompkins County homes Monday through Friday, and the driver checks in with each client at every delivery. Enrolment can be temporary or longer-term. Foodnet also serves community dining at Titus Towers in Ithaca on weekdays, at the Slaterville Volunteer Fire Company on Tuesdays and at The Shops at Ithaca Mall on Thursdays. Anyone 60 or older can come, with advance registration, and an accompanying family member or caregiver is welcome too.
Cayuga Heights doesn't run a senior center of its own, so a companion can do the driving: take your mother to a dining site and sit down to lunch with her, be at the door for a delivery, and keep her company on the days and evenings in between.
Books by mail, and one office for the questions
Tompkins County Public Library's Library by Mail sends up to seven items at a time to the homes of Tompkins County residents who can't get to the library, with the postage paid. The Tompkins County Office for the Aging is the point of entry for aging services in the county, including Gadabout, which provides transportation for older adults 60 and over.
A companion can help your mother choose and return her books, help you keep track of rides and the days meals arrive, and be with her through the hours the services leave open.

Questions Cayuga Heights families ask
Does Cayuga Heights have a senior center?
The Village of Cayuga Heights doesn't list one. Older residents use county services: the Tompkins County Office for the Aging is the point of entry, Foodnet Meals on Wheels delivers meals and serves community dining in Ithaca, Slaterville Springs and the Ithaca Mall, and Gadabout provides rides for adults 60 and over.
Can my father get Meals on Wheels in Cayuga Heights?
Foodnet delivers hot meals Monday through Friday to Tompkins County residents, mainly those 60 or older who are homebound or unable to shop or cook safely. Delivery drivers check in at every visit. Foodnet decides eligibility, so call them first. A companion can be there at mealtime and keep him company.
Can the Cayuga Heights police check on an empty house?
The Village police clerks handle requests for scheduling property checks, and Village officers are on patrol 24 hours a day. If your mother will be away from home, ask the police department. When she is at home, a companion can be there by the hour or stay overnight.
How do families pay for companion care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare doesn't pay for ongoing daily help at home.
