Care options in Stony Brook
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
The Senior Bus and the library at home
The Emma S. Clark Memorial Library in Setauket runs a chartered Senior Bus that picks up Three Village residents who can no longer drive and brings them to the library to take out materials and attend events. Riders bring a brown bag lunch, hot beverages are available, and lunch is followed by a movie or a cultural program. The bus runs on scheduled Wednesdays, and the library's programs are open to all adult residents. For anyone who can't get to the library because of a temporary or chronic physical disability, volunteers deliver library materials to the door, after a first visit by a librarian and a volunteer together.
A companion can pack the brown bag lunch, be there when your mother gets home, and fill the days the bus doesn't run. If she reads at home, a companion can keep her books coming and sit down with her to talk them over.
Town of Brookhaven services, and where they meet
The Town of Brookhaven's Rose Caracappa Senior Center is at 739 Route 25A in Mt. Sinai, open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4:30pm. The Town's nutrition program for residents 60 and over serves a mid-day meal there and at a second site in Mastic, weekdays from 9am to 4:30pm, with a suggested $2 contribution for lunch. Transportation may be available for those who qualify. The Town's list of senior club locations names Port Jefferson, Centereach, Selden and Lake Grove, among others, but not Stony Brook. Meals can also be delivered on weekdays to isolated residents who can't attend, after an assessment, and the County notes that town senior vehicles in general don't cross town lines and that medical appointments have priority.
A companion can drive your father to Mt. Sinai and stay for lunch, take him wherever the shared vehicles don't go, and be there when the weekday delivery arrives. Weekend meals, which the delivery doesn't cover, and evenings after the center closes fit into the same plan.

Questions Stony Brook families ask
Where is the senior center for Stony Brook residents?
The Town of Brookhaven's Rose Caracappa Senior Center is at 739 Route 25A in Mt. Sinai, open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4:30pm. The Town's nutrition program also meets at 15 Herkimer Street in Mastic. The Town's list of senior club locations doesn't include Stony Brook, so ask the Senior Citizen Division which club or site suits you. A companion can drive your mother there and home again.
How does a Stony Brook family arrange home-delivered meals?
Call or visit the nutrition site nearest your home. A Nutrition Program Manager then makes an appointment to do an assessment. The Town delivers meals on weekdays to isolated elderly residents who can't attend the congregate program, with a suggested $2 contribution. A companion can be home when the meal arrives and can prepare meals on the days it doesn't.
Can my mother get library books if she can't leave home?
Yes. Emma S. Clark Memorial Library uses volunteers to deliver books and other materials to Three Village residents who can't visit because of a temporary or chronic physical disability. A librarian and a volunteer make the first visit together, and an assigned volunteer then delivers and returns what she borrows on her library card. If she can still get out, the library's Senior Bus picks up Three Village residents who can no longer drive.
How do families pay for companion care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare doesn't pay for ongoing daily help at home.
