Care options in Shelter Island
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
A week at the Senior Center
The Shelter Island Senior Center is at 44 S Ferry Road, on the lower level of the Medical Center, and is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm for residents 60 and older. The Silver Circle meets every Wednesday from 10am to 2pm, with bingo, yoga and exercise, music and crafts, and pick-up and drop-off available. Congregate meals are served at noon on Mondays and Fridays at the Presbyterian Church on North Ferry Road, with a suggested contribution of $4.
A companion can go with her to the Silver Circle or the Monday and Friday lunches, then fill the other days: breakfast, errands, an afternoon at home and an evening with someone there. The Senior Center's Telephone Reassurance calls come Monday to Saturday, and a companion can be the person she talks to on Sundays.
Free rides on the island and off it
The Senior Center's transportation program offers free rides to adults 60 and older for medical appointments, food shopping, pharmacy needs and other errands, on the island and off it. Medical appointments take priority, and rides are arranged in advance through Senior Services, which takes calls from 9am to 4pm.
A companion can drive when a ride hasn't been arranged, go with her to the appointment and stay through it, and pick up the groceries and prescriptions on the same trip. Between rides, the companion is the one who keeps her week from depending on a single booking.
