Care options in Locust Valley
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
The Life Enrichment Center, and the bus that goes there
The Life Enrichment Center at 45 East Main Street in Oyster Bay serves Locust Valley and nearby communities, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm. There's lunch, exercise, a weekly shoppers bus and no membership fee, and the County welcomes all residents 60 and over. Locust Valley has no senior center of its own on Nassau County's list, so this is the one that serves it.
The center's round-trip bus runs on weekdays and picks up at the door. A seat is reserved at least a day ahead, and the center suggests a donation of $1.50 each way. A companion can drive your mother on the days she'd rather not wait for the bus, sit with her at lunch if she'd like company, and be at the house for the evenings and weekends, when the center is closed.
Books, museum passes and meals at the door
The Locust Valley Library at 170 Buckram Road will bring materials to Locust Valley patrons who are homebound, temporarily or permanently, on a 30-day loan. A library card also opens museum passes, among them Old Westbury Gardens and the Nassau County Museum of Art, and e-books and audiobooks through the Libby app.
Nassau County's Office for the Aging also delivers meals to the homes of residents 60 and older who can't cook or shop safely for health reasons, once a case manager has assessed them at home. A companion can cook the meals in between, take your mother to the library or a museum, and help her set up Libby on a tablet.

Can the Locust Valley Library bring books to a parent who can't get out?
Yes. Locust Valley patrons who are homebound, for a time or for good, can have the library bring materials to them on a 30-day loan. A companion can help your parent choose titles, return them when the loan is up and read aloud if that's what she'd enjoy.
How do families pay for companion care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare doesn't pay for ongoing daily help at home.
