Home care in Far Hills

Far Hills has 948 residents. Two hundred and seventy-nine of them, 29.4 per cent, are over 65, which is one of the highest shares of any municipality on this site.

Its entire official website was enumerated: 103 links covering government, departments, committees, public safety and a complete How Do I index. There is no senior entry, no aging page, and no transportation service anywhere in it.

For a borough of this size that is genuinely unsurprising. Far Hills is smaller than many apartment buildings, and expecting it to run a senior centre would be unreasonable. But nearly three in ten of its residents are past retirement, and it is worth writing plainly that the municipal answer to that is nothing rather than something modest.

The provision that does exist is Somerset County's, and it is administered from Basking Ridge and Somerville rather than from here.

The Bernards Township Health Department, at 262 South Finley Avenue in Basking Ridge, is the contractual health agency for six named communities across two counties, including Bernardsville and Peapack & Gladstone. Far Hills is not among them.

Its local health agency is instead the Somerset County Department of Health, at 27 Warren Street in Somerville, which serves Far Hills as a contracted community and provides its Health Officer along with public health nursing, communicable disease control and health education.

So Far Hills is covered, and it is covered from further away and under a different name from its immediate neighbours. That matters mainly for navigation: a search that works for a Bernardsville family returns the wrong agency for a Far Hills one.

It is worth saying that this is an ordinary contracting arrangement rather than a gap. An earlier draft of our research put it more dramatically than the record supports, and that framing was struck before it reached this page.

The combination here is unusual even by the standards of the estate belt: an extremely small population, an extremely high older share, and considerable wealth.

That produces a version of isolation that is easy to miss because it looks like privacy. Large properties, long drives, few neighbours within sight, and a person who has not been anywhere unaccompanied in months because there is nowhere within reach and nothing scheduled to reach it.

It also means the informal networks that carry a lot of weight in bigger small towns are thinner here. In Sherman or Redding, a town of three or eight thousand people knows itself. At 948 residents spread across a wooded borough, there are simply fewer people to notice.

So the first honest question in Far Hills is usually not about care at all. It is how many times a week somebody currently speaks to another person, and the answer is frequently lower than the family expects.

Far Hills has the newest median housing stock in our entire coverage, at 1988. Late-eighties construction means level thresholds, wide doorways, ground-floor bathrooms or the space to add one, and staircases a standard lift rail fits without bespoke work.

The building is essentially never the constraint here. Where a household is struggling, the house is not why, and adaptation is rarely the answer because there is little left to adapt.

What remains is distance in every direction: inside a large footprint, down a long drive, and along a road network with no destination on it. Losing a licence in Far Hills removes almost everything at once, and there is no municipal service to restore any part of it.

Morristown Medical Center is where discharges come back through, and it is a genuine drive. In the fortnight afterwards, that drive is somebody else's problem to solve, every time.

Everything we provide is daily-living. Personal care, bathing, dressing, mobility support and transfers within a caregiver's training, medication reminders, meal preparation, the household routine, companionship, and the driving that a borough with no transport leaves entirely uncovered.

Nothing about the line beyond that is soft. No skilled nursing, no wound care, no injections, no therapy, no medication administration or dose adjustment, and no clinical assessment. Where a clinical plan already exists we work under it rather than directing it.

We would usually point a family at what is free first. In Far Hills that is Somerset County, reached from Basking Ridge and Somerville, and there is nothing municipal to add to it. Saying so plainly is more useful than implying there is more.

The arrangement that tends to work here is the one that addresses the week rather than the body: a standing commitment that gets somebody out of a large quiet house on a rhythm. In a borough this small and this old, that is usually the first and most valuable thing to buy.
