Bernardsville Parks and Recreation, at 166 Mine Brook Road, states that it offers programmes for youth, adults and seniors. That sentence is the entire published extent of the borough's older-adult provision.

There is no senior schedule, no venue named for senior activities, and no times. The borough's official site carries 79 navigation links, and its own Community Links page, which exists precisely to point residents at resources, lists no senior or aging resource whatsoever.

The distinction between an absent programme and an unpublished one matters, and we cannot resolve it from outside. Something may well be running. What is certain is that a family cannot find it, plan around it, or tell a parent when to be ready.

Nineteen per cent of Bernardsville is over 65, which is roughly 1,514 people. For all of them, the practical answer to what does the borough offer is that you would have to ring and ask.

The real provision here is Somerset County's. Its Office on Aging and Disability Services runs the Senior Wellness Center at 202 Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge, open weekdays nine until four, with lunch served daily.

That is genuinely good and it is a county facility rather than a Bernardsville one. In a Bergen or Union town a household often has a municipal van and county paratransit stacked on top of each other, so a refusal from one leaves somewhere else to try. Here there is a single route through.

One layer is simpler and it is thinner. When the county cannot accommodate something, there is no borough scheme to fall back on, and the answer arrives faster and more finally than it would in a town with its own bus.

That makes advance arrangement worth more here than in most places. Predictable journeys booked early through the county, and a private arrangement identified in advance for whatever will not fit.

Bernardsville does not employ its own health department. The Bernards Township Health Department, based at 262 South Finley Avenue in Basking Ridge, is the contractual health agency for six communities across two counties, and Bernardsville is one of them.

That is an efficient arrangement and it is another instance of the pattern that defines this borough: the services exist, they work, and they are administered from an address in another municipality under another town's name.

For a family it produces a specific and avoidable frustration. Searching for Bernardsville senior services, Bernardsville health department, or Bernardsville transportation returns very little, because those things are filed under Bernards Township and Somerset County.

Knowing where to look is most of the problem here. It is not that provision is missing; it is that almost none of it carries this town's name.

Bernardsville has around 7,916 residents, 19.1 per cent of them over 65, and a median home built in 1960. That is the middle of the post-war period, and in this part of Somerset it means capes and split-levels alongside considerably older and larger estate housing.

The split-level is among the harder houses to age in, and the reason never looks like stairs: four steps between the living level and the bedrooms, six more to a den, none of it registering as a staircase to anybody counting them.

The setting adds the second constraint. This is wooded, low-density country with long private drives, and the distance from a front door to a road is frequently the part of a journey that stops being possible first. A curb-to-curb service ends at the curb.

Morristown Medical Center is where most discharges come back through, which is a real drive rather than a short hop, and that lengthens the whole shape of a recovery week.

Everything we provide is daily-living. Personal care, bathing, dressing, mobility support and transfers within a caregiver's training, medication reminders, meal preparation, the household routine, companionship, and the driving a borough with no transport scheme leaves uncovered.

Nothing about the line beyond that is soft. No skilled nursing, no wound care, no injections, no therapy, no medication administration or dose adjustment, and no clinical assessment. Where a clinical plan already exists we work under it rather than directing it.

The most useful thing we can do here costs nothing: tell you where to look. After that, the honest gap is distance, the weekend after a discharge from Morristown, and whatever the county cannot fit. That is a defined arrangement rather than an open-ended one.
