Home care in Morristown

Morristown Medical Center sits on Madison Avenue and takes patients from across Morris County and well beyond it. The Colonial Coach, which is free and well used, runs one route around Morristown four days a week and carries Morristown residents.

Both facts are published and neither is hidden. Put together they produce a specific and very common misunderstanding: a family in Madison, Harding or Mendham reads that Morristown runs a free bus, notes that their parent's follow-up appointments are in Morristown, and assumes the two connect. They do not. The bus will not collect from outside the town, and the appointment is still a car journey somebody has to make.

For an actual Morristown resident the picture is much better than average for this county, and worth using hard. Four days of free transport inside a town where the hospital, the senior centre on South Street and most of the shops are all within the route is a real asset. It is also four days, not seven.

What we get asked to cover here is the shape left over. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sundays. The evening after a Friday discharge. And the fortnight when somebody is not steady enough on their feet to wait at a bus stop, whichever day it is.

Living beside a large hospital changes the first week home more than people expect, and not always in the direction they assume. The good part is real: the follow-up is ten minutes away, the consultant is reachable, and if something goes wrong the trip back is short.

The part that catches households out is that proximity does nothing about the hours. A discharge on Friday afternoon still lands in a weekend where the senior centre is shut, the Colonial Coach does not run on Sunday, and the medical staff who know the case are not back until Monday. Being near the hospital does not shorten that weekend by an hour.

It also produces a particular kind of over-confidence. Families who live within sight of the building are the most likely to decline help for the first week and the most likely to ring on day three. Nothing about that is foolish. It is simply that the hard part of a recovery was never the distance.

So we tend to suggest short, dense cover across the first fortnight rather than a long thin arrangement: somebody in the house for the mornings and the evenings, then a review. In a town this well served, that is usually all that is needed and it costs a fraction of a blanket package.

Morristown's median home dates to 1970, later than most of the towns around it, and the stock is mixed in a way the surrounding boroughs are not. There are apartment buildings, converted houses, purpose-built older-adult housing and streets of single-family homes, sometimes within a few hundred yards of one another.

That matters operationally because two clients with the same care plan can need different shift lengths depending only on the building. An apartment with a lift and a superintendent is a different morning from a converted two-family with the bedroom at the top of a turned staircase, and the plan has to be written against the building rather than the diagnosis.

It also means Morristown has more older residents living alone in walkable settings than the estate towns nearby, which is a real advantage. Somebody who has stopped driving here has not stopped being able to get to a chemist. That single fact changes what care is for: less about transport, more about the parts of the day that happen indoors.

The way to tell which situation a household is in is to walk it. A plan written from a phone call gets the first twenty minutes of the morning wrong, and in this town those twenty minutes vary more from street to street than they do anywhere else in Morris.

Everything here is daily-living. Personal care, bathing, dressing, mobility support and transfers within a caregiver's training, medication reminders, meals, the household routine, companionship, and getting somebody to an appointment and back.

Nothing about the line beyond that is soft. No skilled nursing, no wound care, no injections, no therapy, no medication administration or dose changes, and no clinical assessment. If the reason somebody needs help in Morristown is clinical, the right answer involves a clinician, and there is a very good hospital in the middle of town.
