Home care in Florham Park

Most towns we cover run something. A van two days a week, a bus with a six-day rule, a shared service with the next borough. Florham Park runs none. There is no municipal senior transport to book here.

What exists instead is a Senior Citizens Club, open to residents aged 62 and over and to a younger spouse of a member, meeting once a month from September through May. On the question of getting there, the borough's own page offers to help arrange a lift for anybody without transport.

That is a generous thing for a small borough to say and it is not a service. A lift arranged as a courtesy depends on somebody being available, and it exists for the monthly meeting rather than for a Tuesday appointment in Morristown. It cannot be booked six days out, and there is no published rule to work backwards from because there is no scheme.

The practical consequence is that in Florham Park, unlike almost anywhere else we write about, the transport question does not have a public answer. It has a private one, and it is worth knowing that before somebody stops driving rather than afterwards.

Morristown, next door, runs a free bus called the Colonial Coach, four days a week. It is a genuinely good service and it is published as serving Morristown residents only.

That distinction catches Florham Park families more than any other in this county. Morristown Medical Center is where discharges come back through. The free bus that runs around Morristown looks, on a map, like the answer. It does not collect from outside the town line.

So a Florham Park household planning around a course of follow-ups at Morristown Medical Center has to solve the journey privately, every time, for as long as the course runs. That is the single most common thing we are asked to cover here and it is worth pricing honestly: it is a series of journeys rather than a care package, and it should be sold as such.

County provision sits underneath, and county provision has county lead times. Useful for the predictable, no use for the sudden.

The rest of the picture is better than the transport picture, and worth saying so. The Florham Park Senior Center on Ridgedale Avenue is open Monday to Friday, nine until half past four, which is a full week and more than several larger towns manage.

One caution on the borough's own page: the sidebar shows the Recreation Department's hours, which are different from the centre's. It is an easy thing to misread and plan a Monday around. The centre's hours are nine to four thirty, five days.

For somebody who can get there, that is a real week with a real structure in it, and it does a great deal of the work families otherwise ring us about. Company, routine, a reason to be dressed by half past nine.

Which brings the whole thing back to the same point. In Florham Park the provision is good and reaching it is the unsolved part, and those two facts together define exactly what a household actually needs to buy.

Florham Park has around 13,564 residents and 21.2 per cent of them are over 65, which is high for Morris County. The median home dates to 1984, which is markedly later than almost anywhere else we cover.

That is genuinely good news and families rarely count it as such. Construction of the eighties usually means level thresholds, wider doorways, a bathroom on the entry floor, and stairs that a lift can be fitted to without a bespoke rail. The building is far less often the constraint here than it is in the pre-war townships an hour east.

What newer houses do bring is scale. Larger footprints mean longer distances inside the home, and a long hallway with nothing to hold onto is its own kind of difficulty for somebody unsteady. It is a different problem from a narrow staircase and it needs a different answer.

So the assessment question in Florham Park is about distance rather than height: how far is it from the bed to the bathroom, and what is there to hold on the way.

Everything we provide is daily-living. Personal care, bathing, dressing, mobility support and transfers within a caregiver's training, medication reminders, meal preparation, the household routine, companionship, and the journeys that have no public answer in this borough.

Nothing about the line beyond that is soft. No skilled nursing, no wound care, no injections, no therapy, no medication administration or dose adjustment, and no clinical assessment. Where a clinical plan already exists we work under it rather than directing it.

The most valuable thing we do here is often the least dramatic: getting somebody to the senior centre and home again. The centre is open five days and does the work of company and routine for free. A household that can reach it needs far less from us than one that cannot.

And where the real question is whether a large house at the end of a driveway still works for somebody who has stopped driving, that deserves a straight conversation rather than being postponed by adding hours. It is the family's decision and it should be an informed one.
